Re: H.265 decode requirements with Plex

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/115002178853-Using-Hardware-Accelerated-Streaming Seems like nvidia's encoder is supported, any reason why OP can't just get a GT 1030 for ~$70? I've got one inside my HTPC and it lets me do 4k 60fps even on YouTube. Feels so wrong for a Sandy Bridge Celero...

Re: TPM for a new system?

My understanding from reading how to set-up BitLocker on boot drives seem to imply the only way to use a PIN was to have a TPM module installed. If no TPM, a USB key could be used to store the key if no TPM was installed. Is this understanding incorrect? In regards to the power, this is for a deskt...

Re: TPM for a new system?

I am currently in the process of putting together a new Coffee Lake based system and have a quick question. I am interested in purchasing a TPM module for my chosen motherboard (encryption of hard drives including boot drive), however I am unable to find the module for sale anywhere. My questions i...

Re: Intel Readies a 5.1 GHz Xeon Chip based on Broadwell

I'd be all over this if it had the 5775's eDRAM. There's a reason EDRAM doesn't make sense on the server parts... the memory controller of Haswell/Broadwell-EP can already do 68GB/sec with DDR4-2133 quad channel, and the EDRAM can only push ~50GB/sec (see https://forums.aida64.com/topic/2864-i7-577...

Even the Thinkpad line has these kind of **** hinge mounts. I had to recently repair a T430 by epoxying the brass nuts back into the cover... and I'm sure it will eventually break again.

Of course the solution is to put screws through the lid, but then it scratches other things up...

I'm not sure if APICID counts up from 0 or 1, but maybe that is the same core, different thread:

3,4 <-- fault

Re: A corrected hardware error has occurred.

no QPI on client chips. client platforms use DMI to connect the PCH and the CPU.

banks are cpu specific, so yeah. i don't know where the list mapping mcbank to functional unit is sadly. I'm relying on the internal MCE tool

Re: A corrected hardware error has occurred.

@shizuka - How'd you determine that from the info Kougar posted? The event log has everything needed to decode it: status is the large, 64 bit register that describes the fault mcibank is a value that determines which fault bucket it belongs to... it was 0, which implicates the instruction fetch / ...

Re: Where/how to get my hands on an i7-4765t?

It's the case much of time time since the K series chips tend to be leaky where the S and T chips are binned for low leakage and low voltage operation. If I have time tonight or tomorrow I'll play on my test rig again and see what it really does when playing with the power settings. Leakage is prop...

Re: Where/how to get my hands on an i7-4765t?

Perhaps, but even with limited TDP a full-fat leaky 2600K/3770K/4770K is going to use more power than the S or T variants at similar performance levels. This is at least only the case when the -S/-T chip is a dual core, as those chips are cooler. Intel chips really have four modes of operation in t...

Re: Where/how to get my hands on an i7-4765t?

Please note that Intel has locked out power limits below roughly 75-80% of the stock TDP value on the standard TDP parts (not sure about low TDP parts, I believe eXtremely-expensive and -U/-Y chips have no TDP lower limit) to prevent what you're suggesting. This has been a point of consternation on ...

Re: mvp 2.0 thingy, any idea how it works?

Leave hyperformance and virtual vsync both off. I've linked an article above that basically shows that hyperformance -> deleting parts of frames for higher FPS... some frames render fast, others render at normal speed. Virtu's argument is that since the game loop runs faster so there's reduced laten...

Re: mvp 2.0 thingy, any idea how it works?

My suggestion is to avoid using it if at all possible, and if you do, only use gpu virtualization (aka screen copying). See http://www.hardware.fr/articles/858-3/hyperformance-virtual-v-sync.html hyperformance essentially nullifies draw calls for higher frame rates, causing increased microstutter vi...

Re: Intel xeon e3 1240v2 question for Z77 compatibility

If the chip stepping is the same, it will certainly work... but why are you going for a Xeon in a z77 board?
4C8T for a better price than a 3770K: good justification
Better performance than 3570K: not really, a 3570K will clock a lot higher
ECC RAM: doesn't work in Z77, just get a 3770k

My 8800GT died the same way. It lasted two months after baking, so consider your card on its last legs.
