Re: Something's different...

I am happy to be corrected. Sounds like the sheer scale of production for a finite number of (human) eyeballs has rendered my idea untenable. Ah, well.

Re: Something's different...

Producing quality video content takes time and money. Why not just make normal podcast videos? No need for special effects or editing. Just impromptu videos that glow with honesty. Even leave the bloopers in to make them fun to watch. They can start off small and progress to increasing length depen...

Yeah. I don't deny that TR was stuck between a rock and a hard place back when that might have been tenable or less unforgiving, either. It just stinks.

Come on, guys. How about an estimate of TR's current value? $100k? $250k? I doubt it's anywhere near that much. The community has mostly moved on, there's no content, and rankings are falling every day. https://www.worthofweb.com/website-value/techreport.com/ The site's not being fed valuable conte...

Re: Starfalcon has built a new computer....not a joke

Yeah, I guess that's the difference. Most users, including me, aren't really using software that pushes the CPU's to their limits. Just out of curiosity, I ran a countif() formula in Excel on an office i7-4770 and an 8th Gen laptop i5. The 8th gen i5 saved about 9 seconds when the formula worked on...

Re: Starfalcon has built a new computer....not a joke

I agree that Sandy Bridge onward's generally been good enough. The 2012 Retina MacBook Pro I inherited from my wife after she got a new Surface rolls along fine for what I ask of it. But even comparing a Core i5 3570K to the 6600K I owned a few years back was pretty striking if I pushed them. And as...

Re: Starfalcon has built a new computer....not a joke

For mainstream stuff, not really that by much. 3900X will only show its muscles if you throw VMs, numbering-crunching and content creation stuff at it. I think you severely underestimate the difference between a 3770k core and a 3900x... Nope, it is pretty close under mainstream stuff. Zen2 isn't t...

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

Fundamentally this is what we expected: a refinement of a refinement of a product from 2017, chiefly notable for providing similar performance at half the price point of its forebears. Meanwhile AMD's offerings are at least competitive if not crushingly superior. Wherever things go in the future, In...

Re: Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

What did you have to do different in building a server compared to building a regular desktop? What software/utilities did you run to confirm everything was OK? There weren't that many concerns different from a desktop build in broad terms - it's a server CPU in a desktop-ish board, living in a Che...

So... My morbid curiosity got the better of me. I ordered the motherboard I linked last week for $72 and it's en route now from China, so it should arrive some time between a week and a half from now and just in time for Christmas. I also ordered a Xeon E5-4640 - Sandy Bridge EP with eight cores, 2....

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

If you update the BIOS on your X299 motherboard to support a new Cascade Lake-X processor , it may no longer work with older processors. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14970/intel-releases-advisory-update-x299-for-cascadex-and-lose-kabyx-support I mean, that's not a huge loss. Re: Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

The first is to repurpose a Core i5 750 + EVGA P55 LE motherboard a friend of mine gave me after building his first new computer in a decade. I think it'd be adequate - 12 gigs of DDR3-1600, four reasonably competent cores, rock solid stability, and a little playing with overclocking reveals that i...

Re: Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

I'd be more concerned about long-term stability and reliability. At least it looks like they've used all solid capacitors, which should help in that regard. The VRM cooling implementation and cooling are reportedly pretty decent. And I'm not going with the bottom-feeders of this market, because who...

Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

After a lot of thinking - probably too much, really - I've come to the conclusion that our house needs a server. We have enough data that keeping it in a centralized, stable location with quality hardware and a regular backup schedule is a sensible thing to do. And I might even be able to farm out s...

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

Questions about 24 - 4 lanes of PCIe 4.0 versus 48 - 4 lanes of PCIe 3.0 aside, $foo Lake-X's big claim to fame versus the 3900x is quad-channel memory support. And I've got a question pertaining to that: while nobody can speak for Cascade Lake-X yet since the hardware isn't out, is there an actual,...

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

Seeing Intel price that 12/24 core CPU at nearly $700 versus the far cheaper (and more PCIe lane) 3900X is funny, especially with the gap in motherboard pricing. It's a great time to be an enthusiast. That it is. I dunno how the 3900x’s PCIe lane situation stacks up - I thought it was a 24 lane par...

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

Good God. I felt like I'd gotten a decent deal on my 7940x at ~$1100 after taxes before, but that's unquestionably better. Still, refined 14nm++ process or no, those clocks are nosebleed high... I can only wonder what the real power and thermal demands are gonna be.

Re: Ryzen 3000 on ITX B450 VRM question

I don't remember where I read it, but under load a 3900x apparently doesn't pull more power than a 2700x thanks to its die shrink. People ran 2700x's in B350 and B450 motherboards all the time, so unless your board has a reputation for a badly underbuilt VRM it will probably work fine with proper c...

Not surprise at all. New nodes almost always have production issues within the first few years of life. At least TSMC's 7nm process is producing viable product(s) unlike Intel's 10nm process so far (only prototypes and paper launches). Expect prices hikes in 2020 from both camps on the desktop/lapt...
