Re: Tutti Frutti Display Woes

There is nothing in a modern PC which would be adversely affected by the presence of a magnetic tip screwdriver. Even a mechanical HDD would not be damaged, unless you use the handle end of the screwdriver as a blunt instrument to pound on the drive, or take the lid of the drive off and drag the sc...

Tutti Frutti Display Woes

So I'm probably dealing with a dead motherboard - specifically, a Biostar H77MU3 - but I've never seen one fail this way before, and I've been building PCs since 1996. The story follows. I put together a little box to use as a workstation / computational node for working with seismic data, separate ...

By nearly a half decade, even. It's true. I was proud as anything to build a zippy Athlon XP 2400+... in 2004. It was a swell piece of kit, but that was 14 years ago. If you're still in love with it - and the motherboard caps haven't blown, and the CPU still runs in a stable way, and you're A-OK wi...

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

But what do you do? It's not wrong to want utility from PCs that keep chugging along years after bean counters and software developers determine their service life has expired. But over time it's harder and harder to argue in favor of hardware that has almost no remaining real world representation....

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

This would be like grousing that the 486 you bought in 1990 didn't run XP in 2004. Your timeline is quite a ways off, plus a 486 was never able to run XP. Some of the affected systems would have been <4 years old at the time of Win7 release, and were listed as officially supported products. A bette...

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

Basically, mainstream CPUs have supported SSE2 for over a decade. While I feel some sympathy for people with old equipment, that stuff is old enough to predate Win7. By nearly a half decade, even. It's true. I was proud as anything to build a zippy Athlon XP 2400+... in 2004. It was a swell piece o...

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

I mean, an Athlon XP wouldn't be *useless* on the modern internet, and it'll run some old video games without trouble. But between being stuck with x86_32 and lacking SSE2, and its high power consumption relative to what it delivers, it's a legacy product. If you must run something modern on it, any...

It seems we've looped back around to my original suggestion from 4 days ago. Still same price, but the MIR ends today (6/18) I'll bite: Look at this GTX1050Ti 4GB for $175 (after MIR) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487290 Only qualifier would be to make sure that your cas...

Well, they're part of Verizon now; so when they do eventually go, it'll probably be from a bullet to the head rather than going down the drain. Eventually Verizon will get tired of feeding the massive money pit. Not any more, SmugMug has 'em. Ahh, I guess I haven't been following the latest develop...

Yeah, I'm still using Imgur. It really doesn't seem that bad. I use Flickr for all my junk. Easy upload using the app on my phone since all my pictures are taken on it these days. The trouble with Flickr is that they don't want you to direct-link to your images, and in fact have gone out of their w...

Re: New futureproof C2Q rig: Please advise!

I'm building a Athlon XP 2500+ / A7N8X / 2GB DDR1 3200 / like its still 2002. Paired with a 2007 X1950 Pro AGP. That's a cool combo. The GPU's overkill, but it should work really well for legacy gaming's sake. And I'm really curious how disastrously bottlenecked a GTX 970 is going to be on a Optero...

Wow, I didn't know that EDO was so much slower than SDRAM! I've heard of EDO, but I never "experienced" it. It's true. Many, many moons ago I had a Tyan board with slots for both SDRAM and EDO. Jumping from 64 MB of EDO to the same amount of SDRAM (damn you, TX chipset!) netted an easy 15...

So any other recommendations? You mentioned the EVGA GeForce GT 730 1GB GDDR5 Low Profile Graphic Card but not with fan. Or is the Geforce GT 1030 worth a shot now that it's been out a while and updates may have fixed the issues? Your best bet's probably to hold out for a low profile GTX 1050 Ti. I...

I can't post links yet but these don't look promising. The Geforce GT 1030 does not seem officially support CUDA, if you check their web site with the page name: geforce-gt-1030 And on medium dot com search for the page name "using-the-nvidia-gt-1030-for-cuda-workloads-on-ubuntu-16-04-4eee72d5...

Wonder what my Cysis frame rate would be? https://i.imgur.com/Uoz7xgE.png CPU-limited, sadly. You could run at an obscene upper limit for resolution if your display hardware could manage it, but for all its graphical prowess Crysis' engine doesn't do much to leverage more than two cores. I agree with what both of you said for sure, I'm just speaking from a current market standpoint. With prices this messed up, if someone needs a card right now then that is about as close to a deal as it comes. I did notice and took into account it being a $70 board, at least it is a good one. Re: Gigabyte GA-AB350-M-Gaming 3 + GA RX 580 8GB

If you can stand to wait a few months until GPU prices die down, I would. By that point AMD's motherboards revised for Zen+ may have hit too, and the AB350 will likely be going for something closer to clearance prices. I know I'm speaking with a lot of hypotheticals, but I'd rather save hundreds of ...

Used R9 380 4GB cards are now selling quickly at $275 on ebay, and are about to hit the $300 listings. For a used, non-X, three year old rebadge of a five year old meh AMD GPU. Boggles the mind. To be fair, the 380 was at least introduced in 2014 as the 285, a replacement for the 7970 / 280(x) seri...

IIRC an OCed K6-III+ was capable of performing on par with the lower-clocked Durons. That may have been true for some integer-heavy workloads, or situations that were pathologically cache-sensitive. It was hard to rival K7's FPU for a lot of jobs, and as i686 feature compatibility became more impor...
