Haven’t looked back in ages, and holy god, it’s all frenzied crypto on the front page now. Burn this place, and salt the ashes.

Vague idea of progress or moving forward? In any case this place is dead and its husk smells like bleach.

Not even a whimper. By the time the plug is pulled on the server, there won't be so much as an echo. It has been an honor, people, but this place is done.

Knock on wood - so far both my Vega 56 and the Radeon Fury I snagged for cheap a few weeks ago have been as solid as ever on Win10. I'd say it sounds like GDDR6 is the culprit, but Radeon VII users have had problems too, so I've honestly got no idea. So far I'm just glad it hasn't gotten me, too. H...

It's going to be a hell of a thing if I can upgrade the Summit Ridge Ryzen in my Linux machine to a Vermeer less than four years later without a motherboard swap.

Radeon RX5500 looks very decent for the price and power consumption, https://www.techpowerup.com/261371/amd-radeon-rx-5500-oem-tested-almost-as-fast-as-rx-580 Yeah, it seems to bounce between the 580 and occasionally give the 590 a run for its money within a tighter thermal envelope. If the prices ...

Yeah. I don't deny that TR was stuck between a rock and a hard place back when that might have been tenable or less unforgiving, either. It just stinks.

Come on, guys. How about an estimate of TR's current value? $100k? $250k? I doubt it's anywhere near that much. Re: Starfalcon has built a new computer....not a joke

Yeah, I guess that's the difference. Most users, including me, aren't really using software that pushes the CPU's to their limits. Just out of curiosity, I ran a countif() formula in Excel on an office i7-4770 and an 8th Gen laptop i5. The 8th gen i5 saved about 9 seconds when the formula worked on...

Re: Starfalcon has built a new computer....not a joke

I agree that Sandy Bridge onward's generally been good enough. The 2012 Retina MacBook Pro I inherited from my wife after she got a new Surface rolls along fine for what I ask of it. But even comparing a Core i5 3570K to the 6600K I owned a few years back was pretty striking if I pushed them. And as...

For mainstream stuff, not really that by much. 3900X will only show its muscles if you throw VMs, numbering-crunching and content creation stuff at it. I think you severely underestimate the difference between a 3770k core and a 3900x... Nope, it is pretty close under mainstream stuff. Zen2 isn't t...

Re: Cascade Lake-X HEDT to go up against Threadripper 3

Fundamentally this is what we expected: a refinement of a refinement of a product from 2017, chiefly notable for providing similar performance at half the price point of its forebears. Meanwhile AMD's offerings are at least competitive if not crushingly superior. Wherever things go in the future, In...

What did you have to do different in building a server compared to building a regular desktop? What software/utilities did you run to confirm everything was OK? There weren't that many concerns different from a desktop build in broad terms - it's a server CPU in a desktop-ish board, living in a Che...

So... My morbid curiosity got the better of me. I also ordered a Xeon E5-4640 - Sandy Bridge EP with eight cores, 2....

If you update the BIOS on your X299 motherboard to support a new Cascade Lake-X processor , it may no longer work with older processors. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14970/intel-releases-advisory-update-x299-for-cascadex-and-lose-kabyx-support I mean, that's not a huge loss. Re: Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

The first is to repurpose a Core i5 750 + EVGA P55 LE motherboard a friend of mine gave me after building his first new computer in a decade. I think it'd be adequate - 12 gigs of DDR3-1600, four reasonably competent cores, rock solid stability, and a little playing with overclocking reveals that i...

Re: Taking a Chance on a Chinese x79 motherboard?

I'd be more concerned about long-term stability and reliability. At least it looks like they've used all solid capacitors, which should help in that regard. The VRM cooling implementation and cooling are reportedly pretty decent. And I'm not going with the bottom-feeders of this market, because who...
