Re: Desktop Monitor With a Kickstand?

Vargis, sorry, I don't think I'm qualified to answer any of your questions. Good luck on your project, though. John, thanks for the reply. From the few Newegg reviews I could find, it seems like the Lenovo is the best of the USB-powered monitors. I'm worried they won't be as good as a cheap, normal ...

Desktop Monitor With a Kickstand?

My boss wants a low-profile monitor for his home office. An arm with a VESA mount isn't ideal. He wants to use a desktop computer, but the monitor shouldn't block the speakers positioned in an arc in front of his desk. I don't know if he plans to have the monitor in front of him or to the side. I su...

If you are just feeding analog audio from the computers then a basic switcher such as this should suffice.

If you want volume control at the switch, what you need is is a preamp.

If you are feeding digital inputs, then you need a DAC and preamp combo.

Cynan is right on the money.

Re: Best smartphone deal currently available

My contract is up in a couple of weeks, and I need a plan. Currently, my contract costs a boatload because it's a subsidized plan for my Galaxy S2 (because my phone cost $500 more than I paid for up front, which means that $500 was rolled into my monthly contract). I'd really like to lower my price....

Re: What's your current home audio system?

Do you find the Oppo to be worth having over just ripping Blu-Ray, CDs, etc. to the HTPC? I've been considering buying one. I have a friend that is very happy with his Oppo. The DAC inside is quite good, although a bit bass-heavy and a bit hot. (Which makes people lean even more towards it in compa...

Re: Laptop BIOS Issue?

That problem has absolutely nothing to do with the Windows install. It's strictly a motherboard issue. I've seen similar behavior on an HP laptop somewhat older than what you describe (DOM 2008 Windows Vista OS). As time progressed it became increasingly unstable. I tried replacing the battery, res...

Laptop BIOS Issue?

Hey all. I hope I posted this in the right spot. If not, feel free to move it, friendly-neighborhood-moderator. :) I've got a friend that came to me with some wonky laptop issues. The laptop is ~3 years old, out of warranty HP with Windows 7 64-bit, an AMD processor, and 4 GB of RAM. The laptop will...

Re: What's your current home audio system?

Debated adding a 5-channel external amp, but honestly, I really don't need the extra power. The Emotiva UPA-500 would be downgrade ratings-wise (but probably an upgrade in terms of real, actual power) and the XPA-5 is sufficiently spendy that I'm holding off on it. I was very seriously considering ...

Re: What's your current home audio system?

You want to get a hold of a record washer. The difference is not subtle. Nearly all my records are pretty well silent. I used for years an old radio station turntable, with no arm, to clean my records. It had what looked like a half horse motor under it and a clutch. You need a good fluid designed ...

Re: What's your current home audio system?

IMO modern pop artists have more serious issues than the mastering though. No amount of dynamic range will make me like auto-tune. :P I completely agree that the loudness war need no longer exist. And that pop stars have other areas than mastering to grow in. However, I think you're giving pitch co...

Re: What's your current home audio system?

A few months ago, I heard Mike Shields present an equalizer. At some point, vinyl came up, and his succinct opinion was this: digital and analog both have inadequacies, but it's up to the listener to decide which inadequacies are harder to ignore. For me, I find it much harder to ignore the crackle ...

My headphone kit is easy to describe: my DAC is the Audio GD Fun, headphone amp is the Heed CanAmp, and my cans are the AKG k702. My primary listening system is less easy to describe. I've got a pair of two-way bookshelf speakers with curved backs and 6.5" woofers. I built them with a friend in...

Re: Sim City: Is it better yet? / Good Management Games?

From what I'm gathering, Caesar is great for its age, Railroad Tycoon 3 is great for its age (even older, I think?), and I should wait to hear how the Sim City update is perceived by the masses. Maybe Tropico could be worth a shot. The descriptions you guys are giving don't make Anno sound quite as ...

Re: Sim City: Is it better yet?

I tried one of the Railroad Tycoon games some years ago. I remember it felt dated, and also obscure, in that it didn't feel very game-like to me. In the same way that flight simulators feel less than games: perhaps powerful, but not really engaging. Also, I don't think I grasped the economic strateg...

Sim City: Is it better yet? / Good Management Games?

I heard all about the server issues during the launch. I assume this is no longer an issue. I heard the game mechanics were pretty screwed up in numerous ways. Has this been fixed? I heard the map sizes are just tiny. Is there a way around this? I know this is an EA game, and I don't like to support...

I wanted a cheap but decent headset for gaming. I spent ~$30 on a Turtle Beach headset. Everyone tells me the mic sounds super clear, and one person even asked me if it was a "fancy microphone like they use in recording studios" like I've used before. But the headset is rather uncomfortabl...

Re: Looking for a good but inexpensive mic

I don't recommend the SM57/SM58 mics others have mentioned. They are dynamic mics, not condensers: they won't pick up the subtleties as well, and they won't sound as naturally crisp. Dynamic mics are durable and a great choice for live bands. And the SM57 is a wonderfully versatile mic for guitar ca...

Re: Help me choose a subwoofer!

Correct, the isolation platforms don't work miracles. They cut down on rattles throughout the house, things like cabinets and door knobs, etc. Also, they help prevent your walls and floors from acting as transducers (in this case, acting as speakers themselves). Personally, I'm considering an altern...
