Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

Yup. I wish I'd have stuck with it. Looks like 24MH/s GPUs will profit $50/month at current pricing. That'd be worth while.....if the value maintains. Did you end up selling your card then? Yeah, I generate a $30 amazon gift card about every two weeks, though I'm using my laptop too. Laptop will be...

Well so much for that crash. BTC is now up to about $3560 (almost doubling in a few weeks) while Eth is sitting at $300.

Re: How about an Rx 480... for $640

The surge in GPU prices has broken Microcenter: http://www.microcenter.com/product/481968/Radeon_RX_470_ARMOR_Overclocked_Dual-Fan_8GB_GDDR5_PCIe_Video_Card Buy one for $329, great. But buy 2 or more and they are only $399. Obviously, they are only willing to let you have one at the "reduced&qu...

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

Copy that. Looks like the best ASIC only generates about $160 a month in BTC, but costs over $2100, so that's a year before profit. Mining Eth and converting it to BTC when BTC drops in price seems like a better bet. It's only a better bet if you've got reason to believe that Eth won't drop even mo...

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

My point here was to ask whether that fork may have started another mining push. I don't know if the new coins are easier to mine with GPUs or whatnot. The bitcoin fork has the same PoW on both chains, which is totally unsuitable for anything other than ASIC mining at this point. GPUs and CPUs are ...

Maybe with Vega coming out the miners will flood the market with used 580's when they upgrade. I've been reading rumors on several sites that an RX Vega driver update is suppose to make it the King of Ethereum mining... https://www.google.com/search?q=rx+vega+ethereum+mining&ie=utf-8&oe=utf...

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

I've also heard that Bitcoin was forked, so is that affecting stuff? Doesn't affect GPUs, and it hasn't really dented the price of bitcoin either. My point here was to ask whether that fork may have started another mining push. I don't know if the new coins are easier to mine with GPUs or whatnot.

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

So I was travelling internationally with limited internet access for the past two weeks. When I left, the "mining crash" had started. I come back hoping to see cheaper GPUs, but I come back and it doesn't look like GPU prices have budged much at all. What gives?! Did mining regain steam ag...

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

Saw the first of probably many mining hardware dumps on craigslist today. Half dozen random brand R9 380 cards for $150 each, way less than the current ebay price. More likely they are secretly being pushed by Nvidia, AMD, and the silicon foundries that produce custom ASICs. Given the first coins a...

Re: So who here is actually mining?

Pulled the plug on my mining this morning. With the value of Ethereum dropping every day and the difficulty increasing it's just not worth it IMO. I figured it takes my RX480 10 days to generate 0.1 Ethereum now (IIRC the difficulty has roughly doubled in the last 1.5 months). I really wanted to ge...

Safest way to prep a laptop for sale

Hey all, I have a Dell Laptop with SSD that I want to sell. Basically, I had it for gaming when I travelled, but since I have a Switch now, the laptop just isn't as appealing on the go. What's the best way to clear/reformat/whatever the SSD for resale? Can I secure erase it and then put a new window...

Re: Holy Mining Crash Batman

I think what you end up with are a bunch of disappointed people. Shoot, the guy that bought my GPU was heading for a $560 mistake before he returned it. The mistake only cost him about $112 after my 20% restocking fee. So technically I've made $112 off mining. Technically. You made more than most I...

Finally beat FTL this week after picking it up on Steam sale; this is the best game I've played since Doom (2016). Re: How about an Rx 480... for $640

Around $18/card/month, so close to $100 a month. I had 1, and bought 4 of them, a pcie ribbon, a HX1000i (using about 860 watts for the 3 card rig). Had all the other parts. I used bitcoins to buy it all, I used to mine 2-3 years ago with 2x bitcrane 1.1th miners and had a few coins built up. Neweg...

4K is a lot of pixels. I don't think most games will run at that natively. I bet they will do some funny 900p-type rendering to get the resolution up like they do to day, just higher (1800p?). I have not bought a 4K TV because there just isn't value in the extra pixels for viewing content at my vie...

Re: Xbox One X

Freesync support is great, but my guess is we won't see TVs with Freesync until late 2018 at the absolute earliest, but more likely 2019, if at all. We'll get it in 2018 if the XBOX takes off as well as the Switch, but it is highly unlikely to do that (my bet is that is a very muted launch, maybe 3-...

No idea really. It just seems like fans would be the first thing to go after a few million revolutions. Um, do the math on a 7200 RPM hard drive running 24/7/365. How does that help? It's fans v. multiple spinning platters, plus the hard drive is also executing writes and reads, so there are multip...

Re: Xbox One X

Whether or not the XBOX does 4k60fps depends on a ton of factors. Forza can do 4K60 because it doesn't really animate anything and there are at most 12 relatively static cars on screen. That's 4K ezmode if there is such a thing. 4k60 Halo? I don't see that happening without compromises elsewhere, su...

Re: So who here is actually mining?

Any idea what the life span is for a good quality consumer GPU that is running at 74c and 15% fan speed (650-700 rpm) for 24/7? My temperature is much lower, and my fan is much faster. It didn't occur to me to do it the other way around to avoid wearing out the fan. Perhaps that makes more sense. I...

Re: So who here is actually mining?

It's only "free money" if you don't pay for your electricity. This. Even getting it for free the high powered GPUs required for mining can get really expensive if there is a run on them. And BTW how often do miners replace their GPUs? I'm just wondering how often they have to replace them...
