Re: The Nintendo Switch is pretty great

I found one at Walmart a couple days ago, just sitting on the shelf. No interest in it yet. A year from now when Wii U titles totally dry up I might get one. Yeah, no rush if you don't have time for it anyway. I finished Zelda and just play Mario Kart a few times a week. Just too bad Mario: Odyssey...

Microcenter near me had one in stock over the weekend... at $599.99. I'd have bought it at MSRP.

A pretty resounding "meh" from me. I had a Predator X34 for a bit. The monitor was great, but it wasn't because of the curve.

Re: Need ideas for my next game...

For turn based strategy, check out Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2. They are also heavy RPGs, but the combat is top notch turn based strategy you can't get elsewhere.

Other than that, it's hard to beat XCOM 2. Don't really have real time recommendations since I'm all about turn based.

Re: Destiny 2 Beta

You thought the Division had an engaging story? I'm excited by the idea of a shooter that I can jump into and out of for some fun when I want to. I'm not interested in a gear grind, but at least that can guide my game time. I don't know if 'engaging' is the best description, but I did finish all of...

Played it, but I'm not sure that it's the kind of game for me. Ran great with G-Sync and SLI using the latest drivers without unnecessary tweaking, but man does it come across as boring. It's like The Division, with better gameplay, but without the engaging story. You thought the Division had an en...

Re: Destiny 2 Beta

Traded the 300K gold for WoW tokens which are worth 15 bucks to bnet balance; ~55 bucks. Right now the going rate for a WoW token is 157,307G. At the time I did it a WoW token was really cheap like 50k G. You can also use your bnet balance to buy Overwatch boxes. I've done that in the past too. I r...

I got it installed but haven't had the time to actually play it. (I never played the first one. #PCMASTERRACE) Besides I had to sell some of my millions of WoW gold on something! (That's right in-game World of Warcraft gold was used to buy a game and it was cheap too, only around 300K G!) I heard a...

Destiny 2 Beta

Anyone here playing the Destiny 2 beta on PC? I've jumped into it the past two nights and I am thoroughly impressed. The game runs butter smooth on my gaming rig with most of the settings on high and MSAA turned on at 1080p. Nice to see a well optimized PC beta for this game. Really enjoying the act...

Re: Which upgrade for more FPS, from an i5-3570K GTX 970

I also had a quick look at what overclocking options my motherboard has and it seems to have done 4.2Ghz right off the bat with the in built automatic overclocking feature. Will give that a try tonight to see if that makes much of a difference to overall performance. Note that those automatic overc...

Re: Which upgrade for more FPS, from an i5-3570K GTX 970

First double check that your video drivers are up to date. It's obvious, but also easy to overlook. I have a 3570K and I feel like it is still going strong. I run mine at stock clocks most of the time, but have a 4.4ghz overclock profile saved for when I try a more taxing game. I'd definitely recomm...

Running everything though my receiver for 5.1 surround is just too convenient. Plus my current LG only has 2 HDMI ports and I need at least 3 or 4. Haven't looked to see what the C7 has, but probably not 4.

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

Personally as a Vega 64 AC owner the card performs admirably at 1440p with a 144hz freesync monitor and that is where AMD should market it. It won't beat a 1080ti at 4K in a month of Sundays but equaling or maybe beating a 1080 at the price I paid (£450) was a no brainer for me. At 1440p it's betwe...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

I am totally not regretting my 1080Ti purchase at launch right now. their share of the high-end GPU market (and possibly mid-level, with Polaris MIA at reasonable prices) is going to further slip. Prior to Vega, they had no effective presence in the high end market. I think AMD's market share will ...

Re: Running 4K screen at 1080p for gaming

OLEDs have an unusual pixel structure with four subpixels instead of the usual three so you'd likely see some oddities even at full resolution (so be sure to turn off cleartype), although only if you're close enough of course. If you don't like the TV's scaling you can always get your graphics card...

Re: Running 4K screen at 1080p for gaming

Just double check some gaming feature doesnt require actual 1080p mode and force usage of said bad scalar. I tried out a cheap 4k with 120Hz@1080p but the scalar made things look so washed out that it wasnt worth it, even for competitive play. Scalar being the one built into a TV/monitor? I don't d...

Yeah, removing that RAM is seen as a positive since it made it harder to optimize performance or something. I think the XBOX uses GDDR5 instead of DDR3 like the XBone

Running 4K screen at 1080p for gaming

Hey Gerbils, I've been wanting an OLED TV for a very long time. Would definitely prefer a 1080p screen, but that's just not really possible anymore. I'm betting/hoping that 4K 65 inch OLEDs will get really close to $2000 this Black Friday, and if they do, I may not be able to resist anymore. Assumin...

Re: Waiting for Miners to go away? Don't hold your breath

The solution to this is obviously more product segregation, kinda like how Nvidia nerfed the compute units on its consumer-oriented line of GPUs. Assuming volumes stay high enough, taping out a chip tuned to a specific workload wastes less of the wafer and thus means more profit for the manufacture...

I think retailers are simply being slow to reduce prices even though demand has dropped. This. It's like how gas prices rise immediately whenever some crisis shows up in the news, but take forever to drop again. Yeah, you'll notice that RX 580s are in stock all over Newegg (just really expensive) u...

The 1080 was never really impacted by mining since it was never very good for mining ETH due to GDDR5X's latency compared to regular GDDR5.

Re: Waiting for Miners to go away? Don't hold your breath

I still don't see how GPU mining is profitable at the moment. An RX 480 can earn you about $2 a day before energy costs. I just don't see how that is sustainable. At this point, I don't believe that miners are buying up tons of GPUs. I think retailers are simply being slow to reduce prices even thou...

TLDR: when will it be a good time to buy a graphics card? Ethereum has to crash in price drastically or otherwise become unappealing for GPU mining. Unclear if ASICs will ever come out for ETH.
