Re: Something's different...

I have been sitting quiet and observing the changes. No I wasn't happy but wanted to give things a chance. As time went by I had to accept that the old Tech Report was dead and was never coming back. Its been months since we have had a in depth review of some hardware. For the most part I see is reg...

Re: Help! Not enough Sata ports

I picked out and ordered parts for a new system. It all showed up, except the case (still in transit), and I was looking everything over and I realized I had made a big mistake with the motherboard. It only has 4 sata ports and I need 6. I currently have a 1TB HDD and two 512 GB SSD's, and a...

Need some advice on CPU air cooler

I am looking to build a new system I have most of the parts picked out except for the CPU and a air cooler for it. Each of the CPU's on my list has a down side it seems. i9-9900k is pricey, i7-9700k no hyper threading, i7-8700k two less cores and threads compared to the 9900k. Then there is the i5-9...

Re: Looking to upgrade from my i5-3570K need some advice

If optical drives count, I also have 5 (2 SSDs, 2 HDDS). So we are both doing it wrong I guess. :D I guess we are. I have a optical drive I use a couple times a week in addition to the 2 SSDs, and the HDD. I simply don't see the point of replacing the 2 SSDs and the HDD, when they are still in work...

Re: Looking to upgrade from my i5-3570K need some advice

The brands of the components I chose are primarily influenced by previous experience. If I have no problems with a brand I keep buying it. I have not had any issues with my i5-3570k system so I just carried that over. Well no issues except for the case. The front fan is an oddball size thickness wis...

My current system does what I want but its been 5-6 years since the last build and I'm feeling the itch to upgrade. Lawsuit alleges Samsung, Micron, and Hynix colluded to drive up DRAM prices

And yet another lawsuit has the Lawyers rubbing their hands together. Probably with good cause. But, I'm not fond of Lawyers. Then again I think most big Corporation CEO's are about as low as most Lawyers. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180427005892/en/Hagens-Berman-Class-Action-Reveals-Wi...

Re: What are you playing right now?

I got bored with my usual line up of games and went looking for something new/different. I spent around a month looking for a MMO that was acceptable to me and a few friends so we could all play together. We all got bored with Ark and decided Conan Exiles needs more work to make it worth spending mu...

Re: OK I finally had with binge drinking soda.

I have also recently give up soda/pop as my main drink. I would go through one to two liters a day. At first it was Mountain Dew until I had some health issues. Turns out I was more sensitive to something in Mt. Dew than most people. That something was BVO, Brominated Vegetable Oil. Bromine is the c...

Re: Ideal Nvidia card to drive a 1440p 60Hz display?

I had a similar decision to make several months ago. I could afford either a GTX 1080 or a GTX 1070 and a new monitor if I didn't go nuts on the price of the monitor. This was back before the miners went nuts buying up all the 1070's. I went with the 1070 and a 27" 1440 monitor. I have not regr...

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

I bought these back in 2012 but, the prices are current prices and I don't know how much they have changed since then. Unless I find a case that I like exceptionally more than the 600T I will be using it over at least once more for my next build. Corsair Graphite Series 600T Arctic White - $119.99 S...

I'm running a 3570K with a GTX 1070 on a 2560x1440 monitor and I have not noticed any issues with the CPU holding my system back. At this point I plan on running it until it dies.

Re: 1440 monitors?

I just spent over a month researching monitors for a friend. It was a confusing mess trying to find something decent that wasn't $500 or more. She ended up going with this one. Its just over your $300 budget but worth the extra $30 as far as I am concerned. Acer UM.HX2AA.D03 27" Widescreen LCD ...

Re: Need some advice helping select a monitor

I also have the Acer K272HULbmiidp and it's a good 1440p IPS monitor at $280 (maybe it's been lower than that? 260?). The frustrating thing to me is that there are two versions of the K272HUL. One is TN, the other is IPS. The TN is easy to spot because it's much cheaper, and has an advertised 1ms G...

Just thought I would give you folks an update. She went with the Gigabyte 1070 and the Acer 2560x1440 monitor and is tickled pink. :P After installing and seeing how her system turned out I decided I liked it well enough to do the same. I needed to replace my failing 780 Ti and I was still using an ...

Re: How long before your last build started to fail?

My last system was a core2duo and it went about 8 years before the Geforce 8800 died. I replaced it with a cheap GTX 550. It wasn't a week later when the fan on the CPU cooler started making grinding noises. At that point I decided it was time to replace the whole thing instead of patching/replacing...

Re: Need some advice helping select a monitor

If money were not an issue I would definitely recommend a G-sync monitor. But, money is an issue and that rules out the 144 Hz as well. I found two Acer 144 Hz monitors with IPS and DisplayPort, $740 and $800 for those. The others that came up were the Crossover brand I had never heard of before. K...

Re: Need some advice helping select a monitor

Running a 1080 or 1070 with a sub-par monitor is likey buying a Porsche and then putting bargain basement tyres on it. Just like the tyres are the only part of the car that touches the road, the monitor is the only part of the computer that touches your eyes (metaphorically speaking). I would recom...

Re: Need some advice helping select a monitor

The 1070 is pretty much locked in if she goes for updating her monitor. If not she will fall back to the 1080 that she originally wanted. Its her money and her choice. Just thought I would try to get more bang for the buck with the 1070 and a monitor over the 1080. I looked at that Dell and its only...

Re: Need some advice helping select a monitor

I suggested a 1060 and hit a brick wall. It took some convincing to drop to a 1070. Plus dropping down to GPU's with lesser capabilities to save a few bucks for a better monitor leads to having more monitor than said GPU can utilize. Just where that line is I'm not sure but I'm sure its there some w...

Need some advice helping select a monitor

I built my cousin a system a few years ago and now she is wanting to update the GPU. First thing she says is that she wants a GTX 1080. But after discussing it for a bit it became clear she would never use it to its full potential and would be a waste of money considering she is still using an old 1...

I'm not a fan of her work but I don't think this one can be blamed on her. From what I have been reading it can be laid at the feet of whoever was in charge from Dick Clark Productions. Re: Is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided worth getting?

My advice is to wait until the "super duper all in one" version gets released with all the DLC included for about half the current price. By the time it comes out they will have squashed a majority of the bugs and done some tweaking to the game. This is the route I normally take when getti...
