What speed is my RAM, really?

I've bought some DDR4-3000 RAM. I've set the memory's speed to 3000 MHz in the BIOS manually. Windows reports that my memory is running at 3000 MHz, and the "Memory" tab in CPU-Z reports 1499.1 MHz, which I believe is correct. However, the "SPD" tab in CPU-Z reports DDR4-2132. Wh...

rm won't remove a directory. Try rm -r.

Re: ASUS PN50 problem

Can you boot into safe mode?

My experience is that cables cause half the problems. Try replacing the SATA cable, if you're using a non-M.2 drive.

Try a live Linux distribution like System Rescue CD to test the RAM, the hard drive, etc.

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

I've finally found the problem and a solution and I wanted to mention it. HDDScan clearly showed the problem, with some blocks taking over 500 ms to read. I've found that I can "repair" these blocks using badblocks with the non-destructive read-write test. (And also presumably with the des...

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

The drive is a data drive; my games are on it. I've removed my M.2 drive, reinstalled Windows, and HD Tune now reports problems with my mechanical drives. The access time tests only cover half the disk, and the error scan starts giving negative numbers for the position after about half the test: htt...

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

The drive is slow under both Windows and Linux. It guess it's clear there's a hardware problem. The question is whether the only problem is with the SSD, or whether I'm right to suspect the motherboard because I'm having simultaneously several problems that aren't obviously related. (The system hang...

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

I did a "quick" error scan using HD Tune. Then I started a surface scan using Windows' CHKDSK, but I gave up after 15% because it was so slow. http://www.storm.ca/~yan/SSD3.PNG The result is very similar to the first one, and there's no improvement at the beginning where I did do a surface...

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

To answer some specific questions: I tried removing and reinstalling the drive. WD's Dashboard utility reports that everything is fine, that "Life Remaining" is 100 %, that the firmware is up to date, that the "Media Wear Out Indicator" is 0.32%, etc. I ran TRIM today and yesterd...

Re: SSD speed varies wildly

The drive's temperature is 37 C (99 F), according to HWInfo. Running HD Tune and Crystal Disk Mark simultaneously, the highest temperature was 45 C (113 F). The drive has my games, and I first noticed the problem when a game was taking entremely long to load. The slow speed was very noticeable, and ...

SSD speed varies wildly

My M.2 SATA SSD drive worked well until a few days ago. Now, the speed varies wildly: http://www.storm.ca/~yan/SSD.PNG However, the speeds reported by Crystal Disk Mark seem normal to me: http://www.storm.ca/~yan/SSD2.PNG I wasn't running anything else when I ran these tests. I have this problem und...

Re: Built ?

I have trouble with this one as Microsoft's track record with updates over the past few years have been pretty bad. But you probably do want to pick up security updates over "major" updates like the "2004" feature update. That's a good point, and I use Ask Woody for advice on wh...

Re: Dual monitor setup no longer working

I had already tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cable, and it didn't solve the problem. This time, I also reversed the cable: the end that was connected to the monitor is now connected to the graphics card, and vice versa. This solved the problem. So I think the cable is slightly defective an...

My office has only now moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and pretty much everybody hates it, to my surprise and delight.

Part of the complaints are more about the switch from Office 2010 to Office 2016, however.
