So their position is basically that the best way to complain about the global surveillance cabal is to demonstrate that their technology is (potentially) part of the problem? Not sure if serious, must be one of those 'marketing person' things... Anyway, I got bored with FF about four years ago. It's...

I like EVGA a lot more than I like non-EVGA, especially if you're not looking to overclock.

Yes, RGB is both good for specific keys and also getting a color like low intensity orange (my preference) that isn't popular as a standard backlighting color.

MX Black is kind of rare, yes. If you're serious about switch types it might be worth either taking a trip to Microcenter (which has KBs on display) or ordering one of those Cherry sampler kits to see which switches he like the most. Red and brown are the most common. For the mouse, it's good to kno...

It's a great idea in theory. In fact, just the other day I was thinking about making an attachment for my Sonicare to basically do this. But, just because someone on the Internet says that it works, does not mean that it actually works...

Re: 4K @ 60Hz KVM Switch / 144hz @2560x1440

I might have to look into this, I've been needing a decent KVM switch. I don't care about 4K but I'm skittish about regular KVMs since, as their product site alludes to, most of them were only intended to be used in an ad hoc server room with a 1024x768 monitor and circa 1995 peripherals. The site ...

If I was you, I'd go with Coffee Lake for the extra cores. You had initially mentioned a 6850K...think of an 8700K as getting a 50+ percent off discount. The HEDT platform's other advantages shouldn't be a big deal for the typical gaming machine.

Agreed on the refurb thing, that's definitely what I'd be doing if I was back in college. Actually, I'm thinking of doing it anyway because I think I need a mobile workstation that still supports W7 and they don't make those anymore. Anyway, on to specifics: Screen size Good/better/best: 15" 19...

Hawkwing, Sears/K-Mart are already dead, they just haven't stopped moving yet. IIRC it was simple asset-stripping by a holding company, but they would be in trouble in the current environment even without that. Well, you're not wrong. I buy a couple of things from Sears so their passing will be not...

I've thankfully worked for pretty good companies, albeit only two jobs so small sample size. A GTX 1070 is definitely ideal for driving a 1440p display, but I have a hard time recommending it (or any other enthusiast grade card) for a single AAA game and a bunch of lighter stuff that will run on anything. Likewise, I'm not happy about suggesting a 1060 to a 1050Ti owner as it's a lot of mon...

Is there any particular reason why you don't want to just buy a decent USB dongle? That's going to be easier, probably cheaper, and it can be replaced if/when it goes bad. Some boards will let you do that too, but typically only the high-end ones and it's an expensive and proprietary accessory. If y...

As for escalating it, Dell has internally decided that certain design flaws are acceptable. He doesn't agree with it as he thinks it ju...

Outside of a few outliers, going beyond four threads yields little or no benefits to mainstream workloads and games. Unless you plan on streaming with the CPUs. It is them main reason why Intel never bother making a 6 core normal desktop SKU until pressure from Ryzen 7. That's true, Krogoth, but no...

Re: Which cpu to get?

Of the two I'd say get the Intel unless launch reviews are really crummy, since it's a more stable platform and typically does better for gaming where you need a smaller number of faster/better cores. Where Ryzen gaming makes sense is when you've got around a $200 budget and looking at the 1600/1600...

The other thing to do with NewEgg reviews is look at the worst ones and actually read what they are complaining about. Stands to reason. Also, on the mining front, "but we think it's just a short term fad" isn't such a great justification for not increasing supply any more given that GPU mining has been a thing for, what, about five years now? It ebbs and flows, sure, but so does gamer demand based on what...

I'm a big fan of the Textron Scorpion which fills a similar role. Cheap bastard that I am, I have a lot of respect for a company going into something like this with cost-effectiveness and generic component usage as key design goals. Personally I don't see what a new system builder guide would do differently. Nothing that's come out in the last four months has any bearing on the price/performance brackets that the TR guide covers.
