Re: Official: Ryzen 3700X and 3900X review comments

Impressive showing; AMD has done a great job of catching up to Intel, and in some cases even beating blue team's best. I won't be upgrading for a long time thanks to a HEDT platform built in 2016, but it's nice to know that I've got solid options when I do. Ironically, I was doing some cleaning this...

Re: When did this happen? DropBox "free" limits to 3 devices!

This is exactly why I don't rely on cloud services unless I really have to; you're completely vulnerable to the current management's whims. I dropped using Hamachi as an absolutely perfect virtual LAN solution for the same kind of change (they limited it to 3 or 4 devices or something stupid). QFT ...

I got the IP ban notice as well, they probably accidentally used a wrong wildcard or something. I won't hold it againt them though; for a moment there I felt like a rambunctious teenage forum warrior again. 8)

Lots of stuff is going direct to ec2 URLs, definitely some cleanup work to be done.

Re: Old Monitor suddenly expensive

It's pretty typical that when something gets discontinued the price goes up. It's an artifact of e-commerce sites' love affair with affiliate sellers: a few companies resell old stock at a markup for those who just have to have that one thing, and when regular stock runs out they're the only ones le...

Re: Battletech game coming out

Evasion is good but it won't win the fight, especially once you're up to heavy/assault mechs that only get one or two evasion points for a full move. Cover and other terrain buffs/debuffs are also very important, as is using the precision fire ability to disable dangerous mech and/or their main weap...

Re: Mass Transit Safety

After years of riding mass transit (buses, trains, taxis) I expect a mass transit system to have the same level of crime as the city it serves. If you can walk down the street without being held at gunpoint, chances are you have the same breadth on the train as well. This is generally the position ...

Autonomous vehicle technology is going nowhere fast, so if that's all the rideshare companies got they may as well start planning the bankruptcy papers. It's got basically the same problem that the additive manufacturing industry had when it went after consumers, it all sounds really great in the ma...

I should definitely look into that Craigslist thing when I get closer to getting serious about having a second vehicle for winter use. $30k for a used truck or decent 'real' SUV from a dealer just isn't happening, and I'd rather pay a couple grand for a crappy truck with some issues than have no tru...

Atomic Pi is interesting for what it is, but it's not really any kind of challenger to RasPi simply because it's a one-off batch of repurposed bespoke SBCs. When their resellers run out, that's all she wrote.

There are some interesting production x86 boards once you hit about 80 bucks though.

Re: Brand new CPU build for Cyberpunk 2077 (Budget Important!)

CDPR just announced that they expect Cyberpunk 2077 to launch in April 2020. By then we should have at least Navi as a minimum, and probably also another generation of Nvidia silicon too. Also assume that, since it's CDPR and they always push the envelope on graphics, you'll want the latest and grea...

Due to there not being a lot of good information about which KVMs work well for gaming peripherals and high resolution and/or refresh rate displays, I threw down with the famous Level 1 Techs KVM which does come in a dual-monitor version for about $700 including all of the cables. Re: How do i obtain 144Hz refresh rate on my new Asus Monitor?

HDMI vs. DP is largely a matter of support base; HDMI was developed by a consortium of A/V equipment makers whereas DP was developed by the much more PC-centric VESA organization. Neither one has any incentive to wage economic warfare so the two formats coexist with little drama.

Core2Quad?!?! Jeebus, that's a dinosaur...a 650 Ti is indeed about as good as it gets for that era, and none of the core components is what you want for pushing the envelope on performance. My suggestion is to return the overpriced HDMI cable on general principle, use the DVI cable at 60 Hz to avoid...

That does rather sound like something that Best Buy would do. Assuming you're doing this for gaming, even light gaming, you should really look into getting a better graphics card before messing with cables and max refresh rate. 650 Ti was great in 2012 but it's simply not up to pushing >100 Hz for a...

Kind of ironic timing given that it's a question of 4C/8T vs. 6C/6T when the powers that be are suggesting that security conscious users should get on with it and disable hyper threading. :) In any case, a wealth of performance data strongly indicates that while six cores is more future proof than f...
