Re: Get your salt shaker handy -- Radeon 7 too expensive to sell?

I think AMD fabricated a whole bunch of boards for MI50, hoping that the server vendors would lap them up, but then had a load of excess stock because it's REALLY REALLY HARD to actually buy a server with MI50. All the vendors prefer to scale out with MI25 instead - probably better thermals, more f...

Re: Get your salt shaker handy -- Radeon 7 too expensive to sell?

So with that established, it does sort of seem like they're selling the exact same product with a different cooler and box. They would have had to staple on some video outs but you are kidding yourself if you think the Instinct boards didn't already have the pads for them. (・へ・;) I wonder if whoever...

Re: Get your salt shaker handy -- Radeon 7 too expensive to sell?

Sure, apart from the partially disabled die, fused off features, and totally new cooler, it's exactly the same as the MI50. It's not like they're just putting a sticker on the box, it's a different product. It's not partially disabled, it's the exact same die. And the FP64 stuff is probably ...

I also own a 1080Ti and your performance numbers don't add up to my own experiences (or every site's benchmarking) unless you're turning your settings wayyyyy down - let alone a 580@4K resolutionLOL. Most people think it's "dumb" to up the resolution while turning off all the features, di...

Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

GPU requirements for games are grossly overblown and overstated all the damn time. It's just not that hard to run games. I used to play stuff at >100 FPS in 4K reso on a 4K60 monitor, and also in 3840x2160 @ 120Hz using Nvidia DSR on a 1920x1080 @ 144Hz monitor, which is MORE demanding than native 4...

* Windows just works 99% of the time, but if something does go off the rails, I know I'm in for a bad day. Linux just works 98% of the time, but it gives me the freedom and documentation to fix whatever it can throw at me. When fixed, it also tends to stay fixed a lot better than Windows. You can a...

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480= 980 GTX in 3D Mark 11

Techpowerup is just guessing based on the numbers we have already. There's no reason to assume that resource allotments in GCN4 aren't changed from prior revisions of the design. Besides that, GCN chips don't necessarily have fixed ratios of compute units to ROPs the way NVIDIA designs do. If this r...

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480= 980 GTX in 3D Mark 11

I don't understand the confusion, AMD has shown three pieces of silicon, Polaris 10 which is the RX 480 but might have 1 CU disabled so that a RX 480X or RX 490 could be made from the same die, Polaris 11 which is about half the size of Polaris 10 for the low end and Vega which is a big die with HB...

Re: AMD Radeon RX 480= 980 GTX in 3D Mark 11

Apparently you're just assuming the 8GB and 4GB RX 480 cards are clocked exactly the same and the only difference is RAM size? I wouldn't do that, but go for it! Why not? Historically speaking that has been the case. See GTX 960 4GB/8GB, R9 380X 4GB/8GB, R9 290X 4GB/8GB, etc. In fact historically s...

Re: Machine "feel" and "platform latency"

I'm guessing, but I wonder if poor power meant it couldn't up the voltage to the cores when it needed to and so the clocks didn't ramp up like they were meant to and that gave you poor latency. Well, it wasn't that, anyway. I had no trouble overclocking my CPU and it gave the expected performance i...

How is the 480 being on par with a 980 GTX "looking good?" Normally I wouldn't pay much attention to 3DMark, but AMD is sure to have paid attention to it because of it's popularity if nothing else. If matching a 980 is the best they can do it's not a good sign. RX 480 at $199 matching the...
