Re: Basting meat with molasses in slow cooker?

Cool! I've never heard of blackstrap molasses, but it sorta sounded more like black treacle than regular molasses. A quick googlin' says blackstrap is less sweet, maybe even a little bitter, compared to black treacle? I'd say give it a shot! Black treacle is the not-so-secret ingredient in my wife's...

whoo boy! for these prices, I've been considering a $40 USB switch, and a $350 stick to hit the input button on my monitor  Seriously though, I'd rather just see manufacturers integrating KVM functionality into their high-end monitors that already have hubs- shouldn't that be a way cheaper way ...

Isn't Stevia exactly the kind of artificial sweetener you'd be avoiding by not drinking soda? It is not an artificial sweeter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia And tastes just fine in coffee. [soapbox] Sure, stevia is not technically an "artificial sweetener," but it's bad for you in ...

I'm all about the stuffing/dressing. I make mine with chorizo, sofrito and smoked paprika. It's different enough that I can justify making two kinds of stuffing

You do know that 8.1 is on the first beta right? Having said that, I have 8.1 running on my XL and it works great. I haven't had a single crash since I installed it (the day they released it). Oops, sorry I didn't make that clear. Yeah, I'm on developer preview on the smaller phone. This is the onl...

I have one and l have loved it, but when I updated to 8.1 it's feeling a little sluggish compared to 8.0, which felt blazing fast. my google launcher seems to be acting up, and it routinely crashes after I type a few characters- this only seems to happen if I start typing characters, if I swype it's...

Re: I sure wish I have a 40" 4K display...

This may be a silly question to ask, but do any 4K TVs have Displayport connectors? Not in the consumer sphere. Samsung and others make "business class display" lines that cost a lot more, but have 5 y warranties (CDW has a bunch) and some have DP inputs. (they're made for signage and stu...

Re: Recs for college student laptops

My opinion: ~13-incher, 256GB SSD GTFO as far as 256GB is concerned. What a f'n joke. is this 2014? OP asked for cheapish laptops, not a laptop for you and me, hoss. IMO if you're dropping 10-60 grand a year on college maybe don't skimp on an item that is a) <1% of the budget and b) something they'...

Re: Recs for college student laptops

These recommendations don't actually seem too bad for the sub-$600 range: an i3 with a 1080p display for $350? Not too shabby.
https://www.laptopmag.com/best-laptops

$600 is a bad price-point because for $700 you can get a ZenBook with an i5 and a 256GB SSD. Over 4 years, that $100 is negligible.

Re: Recs for college student laptops

Also, see if the school recommends a brand, or see what faculty are deployed with- our IT staff constantly performs small repairs for students who break their laptops, something you can easily get parts/support for is convenient. Specific departments might also make suggestions (I'm thinking graphic...

Re: Recs for college student laptops

My opinion: ~13-incher, 256GB SSD, whatever RAM comes with this spec. There's a reason MBPs dominate, both on the faculty and student side, but if you don't want a MBP, shoot for similar specs on the PC side and they'll be fine. Most students don't need much power, and unless you can very clearly id...

You're right, I need to get on it, but keep putting it off. replacement fan/motor seems to be ~$25 for my model- thinking I'll buy a new one, swap out the one that's whining a bit, so I can clean it at my leisure, then swap it in the next bathroom, etc. This will be on the list to do over Thanksgivi...

Re: Fitness tracker or smart watch

For people encountering this thread later, IMO DCRainmaker is the best independent reviewer of these type devices. FWIW, I wear a polar M400 daily- it's kind of an interesting compromise- it's basically a dumb smartwatch, but is a real GPS+ fitness tracker to boot. Not any larger than the G-Shock I ...

Bought a 1st gen Pixel a couple weeks before the 2 launched. Don't really feel the need for any more phone, even without these issues. Hi, OPUS your screen is ~86.4 PPI at 1280x720. https://www.sven.de/dpi/ Specs say you can output 2560 by 1600 pixels to an external display, via mini Display Port (mDP). A 27" 2K screen is ~109 PPI- for me this is about my ideal PPI, but it sounds like it's too small for your preferences. Since...

Re: A gerbil's tv box choice?

It looks like Roku added that feature in their latest update -- at least the Ars story I linked above mentions it specifically for the $49 "Stick" so you'd expect it would be in the more expensive models as well. Cool, that's good to know! I was basing my comparison off of this site, whic...

Definitely not a Pi, if you're upgrading because your current setup is showing its age. Bought a FireTV (+ Plex) when it was the most powerful offering, because hulu crashed a lot with our old Roku (2XS). No complaints here, but I think all the mainstream ones are powerful enough now. Biggest sellin...

Re: really weird charging problem with my V20

Just bought a Pixel, and reading Benson Leung's reviews of Type-C gear has made me very leery of going off-brand. Lots of the cheap Type C stuff is not to spec and even potentially dangerous. Anker's one of the good ones, though. Not sure if this situation better on the QuickCharge side of things (p...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

St. Vincent - St. Vincent (2014) St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) has her own unique flavor of quirky pop-art-rock. Maybe you could call her Kate Bush for the new millennium? Her sound is more aggressive than Ms. Bush though. Some echoes of Talking Heads on this one, which makes sense given that he...

If you don't need access, and are just providing a safe spot for their backups, Time Machine (as of Sierra) lets you back up to a networked SMB share.
