Re: Monitor help! Please help.

Hi, OPUS your screen is ~86.4 PPI at 1280x720. https://www.sven.de/dpi/ Specs say you can output 2560 by 1600 pixels to an external display, via mini Display Port (mDP). A 27" 2K screen is ~109 PPI- for me this is about my ideal PPI, but it sounds like it's too small for your preferences. Since...

Re: A gerbil's tv box choice?

It looks like Roku added that feature in their latest update -- at least the Ars story I linked above mentions it specifically for the $49 "Stick" so you'd expect it would be in the more expensive models as well. Cool, that's good to know! I was basing my comparison off of this site, whic...

Re: A gerbil's tv box choice?

Definitely not a Pi, if you're upgrading because your current setup is showing its age. Bought a FireTV (+ Plex) when it was the most powerful offering, because hulu crashed a lot with our old Roku (2XS). No complaints here, but I think all the mainstream ones are powerful enough now. Biggest sellin...

Re: really weird charging problem with my V20

Just bought a Pixel, and reading Benson Leung's reviews of Type-C gear has made me very leery of going off-brand. Lots of the cheap Type C stuff is not to spec and even potentially dangerous. Anker's one of the good ones, though. Not sure if this situation better on the QuickCharge side of things (p...

Re: TR Frankenbot 2016: It's Alive!

Not sure it's in the spirit of the frankenbot, but I'm guessing my money would be much better spent helping TR buy some hardware than throwing my old clunker at it with my admittedly cheap but coal-derived electricity. Apologies if I'm bringing up things that were tried and rejected in the past (saw...

Re: ExpressCard, is it still a thing?

US Gov't Employee SmartCards (i.e. Common Access Cards) that plug in via ExpressCard? That was the only thing I heard of them being used for post 2000ish. though I think even for that, the trend was moving toward USB peripherals? this guy's got a review from 2017, so I guess maybe they're still bein...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

St. Vincent - St. Vincent (2014) St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) has her own unique flavor of quirky pop-art-rock. Maybe you could call her Kate Bush for the new millennium? Her sound is more aggressive than Ms. Bush though. Some echoes of Talking Heads on this one, which makes sense given that he...

If you don't need access, and are just providing a safe spot for their backups, Time Machine (as of Sierra) lets you back up to a networked SMB share.

I read a lot of PDFs for work, and figured, crap, somebody probably makes a big e-ink monitor, that would be great! They sure do, but not at peasant pricing.

Re: Core i3 or Core i5 for family?

I built my wife a mini tower around a Haswell i3-4330 from a black friday sale a few years ago. 256 GB SSD Boot drive, 8 GB RAM. For general office work, I can't tell it apart from my 6700K. With the level of photo editing you mention, I think even this would be fine. Cores don't matter much for par...

I agree that Ubiquiti APs is probably the best way to go (I'm also reading up on this as we close on a house in a couple weeks, and am probably going to run Ubiquiti APs off of my old Black Knight router). This recent Ars article might be good reading on the state of mesh routers: Plume APs look coo...

I replaced the shattered screen on my wife's iPhone 5s last and forgot to take pictures! Ditto above w.r.t. waiting for new releases. I've got the 128GB 12" with cellular, and I like it a lot. I use the stylus most days for teaching and taking notes, and if you're taking notes, the 12" is where it's at. I came from a ~10" Win8 tablet, and the "piece of paper" fo...

I posted this elsewhere, but I figured I'd add it to this list, as it's a less common switch people might be interested in. Just upgraded to Matias QuietClick APLS clones (in a KeyboardParadise V80, TKL), and I'll never go back to Cherry. My understanding is the feel is similar to the Topres, in tha...

Re: New Laptop Suggestions?

I'd suggest something like the ASUS X200- it's got an atom, but with those specs, I'd say anything will work. It's 11" so it won't take up too much space, and the battery lasts forever. We got one for $200 in an emergency and it's surprisingly capable. Screen is terrible but the keys aren't too...

Type on it for a week. example. Photos, talking about distinguishing features would be nice. Re: Upgrade my aging FX8350

I've got an R4 and a corsair 450R. R4/R5 is an awesome case for the price, but it's air-optimized, IMO. Build quality between my two cases is similar. 750D is nicer, from what I've heard. If you plan on a 280 rad, I'd say Define S is a better case than the R5, as it's designed for radiators, and sti...

nice things cost money, bottom line. I gladly pay Newegg a little more, because I value the time and money they put in to organizing their inventory, as it saves my time, which I value. wish I had bought one of those switch testers before I bought my CM Storm tenkeyless with browns. Re: Can someone give me a tip on how to set up my new network?

Aether and JBI's suggestions are both good, I'd personally go for the new piece of kit, keeping the router and AP separate. You could disable the WiFi part of your Asus wireless router and just use it as a physical router, buying a standalone WiFi AP to put centrally in the house for best coverage,...

I also have an  Asus RT-N66U. It's not AC, but I really don't have a need for AC, as my router's near my TV, so Streaming devices are hard-wired, and it's fast enough for what I need.  I'm hoping it lasts me until we buy a new house in a year or so and then I'm gonna go hog-w...
