Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Sounds more like PSU to me too. Turning off randomly (and not under gaming load) usually means PSU, in my experience. (motherboards i usually see go between 100% alive and 100% dead). Do you have another PSU to test with? I'd def do that first. Worst-case scenario you've bought a nice new PSU that w...

Re: Advice on Microscope for Copepods

As a person who mostly uses very expensive scopes, I second the recommendation for "try something cheap first." :) What you're trying to do isn't very hard if you read up and copy what others in hobbyist communities are doing. As other have said, looks like 200-400x total mag is enough. On...

Re: "Single Signon" Browser Tabs...does something like this even exist?

Another satisfied LastPass user here. Used to use it with a Ubikey 2FA, now I just use Google Authenticator. There are occasionally sites that get borked and I have to manually enter something- usually something like it suggests passing my password into the popup where I'm meant to type a one-time p...

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

Wooting has a clicky hall switch. Early reviews of the linear version say it's really smooth, it seems like a better design than the other optical to me (hotswap and self contained in the switch housing).

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

We're in a bit of a golden age of keyswitch innovation- lots of new switches coming out recently. Basically Cherry MX is Budweiser and we've entered the craft beer phase. I think getting a hotswap board is a great way to get into things, as you can really dial in your switch preference now. big thin...

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

Edit: Also, I was not previously aware of the Glorious GMMK kit. Actually tempting, need to see what it would take to pull the existing Blacks from my Ducky Zero. Nope, it uses "kailh hotswap sockets" and you need switches with no solder on the pins, the tolerances are pretty tight (thus ...

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

Brand recommendations here. You'll see Ducky is well-regarded :) I also see a lot of firmware-bricking threads for Duckys- some say reinstalling another firmware sometimes fixes it? Corsair is a common whipping boy in the MK community. IMO they're not that bad, but they have lower build quality for ...

Dogfish Head Siracusa Nera Typical weird-ass (is that an oxymoron?) Dogfish Head beer. Hybrid of an Imperial Stout and a red wine (Syrah grapes), aged on oak. 10% ABV. One of their better experimental brews. Not too sweet, not to dry. You can taste the beer, the grapes, and the oak, and it's decept...

Re: Basting meat with molasses in slow cooker?

Cool! I've never heard of blackstrap molasses, but it sorta sounded more like black treacle than regular molasses. A quick googlin' says blackstrap is less sweet, maybe even a little bitter, compared to black treacle? I'd say give it a shot! Black treacle is the not-so-secret ingredient in my wife's...

whoo boy! for these prices, I've been considering a $40 USB switch, and a $350 stick to hit the input button on my monitor  Seriously though, I'd rather just see manufacturers integrating KVM functionality into their high-end monitors that already have hubs- shouldn't that be a way cheaper way ...

Re: I sure wish I have a 40" 4K display...

This may be a silly question to ask, but do any 4K TVs have Displayport connectors? Not in the consumer sphere. Samsung and others make "business class display" lines that cost a lot more, but have 5 y warranties (CDW has a bunch) and some have DP inputs. (they're made for signage and stu...

Re: Recs for college student laptops

My opinion: ~13-incher, 256GB SSD GTFO as far as 256GB is concerned. What a f'n joke. is this 2014? OP asked for cheapish laptops, not a laptop for you and me, hoss. IMO if you're dropping 10-60 grand a year on college maybe don't skimp on an item that is a) <1% of the budget and b) something they'...

Re: Recs for college student laptops

These recommendations don't actually seem too bad for the sub-$600 range: an i3 with a 1080p display for $350? Not too shabby.
https://www.laptopmag.com/best-laptops

$600 is a bad price-point because for $700 you can get a ZenBook with an i5 and a 256GB SSD. Over 4 years, that $100 is negligible.

Re: Recs for college student laptops

My opinion: ~13-incher, 256GB SSD, whatever RAM comes with this spec. There's a reason MBPs dominate, both on the faculty and student side, but if you don't want a MBP, shoot for similar specs on the PC side and they'll be fine. Most students don't need much power, and unless you can very clearly id...
