Re: Anandtech founder leaked Apple confidential material

What a trip reading his name again in this context. Always wanted him to come back to the public conversation in some way...But this ain't it.

Knowing Apple, maybe he does have to make a return to Anandtech...

But this was not corroborated yet, so, who knows.

Re: Why are game consoles so efficient??

In addition to everything that's been said, Santa Monica Studios (as well as Naughty Dog with TLOU/Uncharted) are downright wizards, man. I wonder what they could do with those same effectively unlimited budgets and talent if it was turned towards maxing out a modern PC. Efficient? The PS4 was drawi...

Re: Is x86 RISC or CISC?

I'm sure they could if they wanted to. Just isn't much point, other than as an academic exercise. Well, the ucode ROM and x86 decode blocks being almost as large as a performance driving unit like Int or FP seems like a reason it may have had difficulty scaling down to where ARM is. https://www.tec...

Re: Is x86 RISC or CISC?

x86 is definitely CISC, but one of the first things a modern x86 CPU does with an instruction stream is convert it into a different instruction set that it uses internally, which is (but doesn't have to be) more RISC-like. Effectively, they appear as CISC to the outside world, but are RISC under th...

Wow. To me this speaks to wanting completely new cores further out, Keller isn't really one you hire for a spit shine. Guess Intel saw everything that's happening and found their future roadmap to deal with it.

Kaby Lake G use of Vega questioned - no RPM

Interesting finding, Kaby Lake G doesn't seem to support Rapid Packed Math, leading Toms to question if it's not scaled up Polaris with HBM2, rather than scaled down Vega.

I have a 6S+ that benches like day 1, feels like day 1, and has day 1 battery life. My friend just got a OnePlus 5T and couldn’t wait to geekbench it against my phone. He and his octocore were very very disappointed. I should add that i’m easy on batteries and always have been. By far, the most int...

Re: iPhone slowdowns with subsequent iOS updates

I think two different ideas are being mixed up in this whole thing. The most common was that the OS itself got so fat it ran poorly on old hardware due to them not really caring to optimize on them anymore. Notable releases that really chunked things up were 4, 7, and now 11, among earlier others. C...

Re: The Pixel 2 family is a hot mess

It's really no wonder Apple had to single source their OLED from Samsung. LGs Plastic OLED is nowhere close to the Sammy AMOLED. These issues would be more of a firestorm on the X, though they're still unforgivable at the also nearing 1K Pixel 2 XL.

Ahh now I get it, the channels only intake to part of the fan, so it's intaking from the upper part here, and exhausting thorough the lower part. The intake part flows up over the fan housing into the blade and out the exhaust part. So front to back cooling. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi...

Re: Apple TV 4K teardown: Active cooling, Thunderbolt on ARM

I'd love to see that fan in motion, my guess is it's running at some hilariously slow RPM considering it's size and the fact that the whole unit is capped at like 15 watts of power by it's power supply. It's a bit of an illusion, the outer rings seem to be an air baffle/channel instead, the inner p...

I saw it, but I'm not sure non-standard Android is a good idea. Also, maybe 2GB RAM isn't enough, especially long-term. I'm keeping an eye on this one once it's out to see how easily people can root it and put stock Android on there. The hardware is pretty good for the price (2 A72s, 2GB RAM), bett...
