Re: Something's different...

You're doing a fine job from a tough spot mate and it's appreciated, thankyou.

I don't mind the new look so much personally (I actually find the article body far easier to read in this layout), bit generic but you'll fix all that up when you get the keys back.

Stick with it, all good 8)

Advanced Renamer for me mate, just re-done my entire video library. You set a rule and a group of files or directories, and away you go. You can undo a batch too, which is handy.

Re: Fan question for y'all

I second the suggestion to just stick with the AP180/AP181 mate.

There's no better fan at the size (the OEM eBay 2-pin cheapies are obnoxiously noisy) and by the time you price out adapters and decent 140mm fans you're at $30 a pop anyway!

Re: Best Open World Single Player with Ai bots for Multi Player?

My go-to for what you're after is still Star Wars Battlefront II Classic.

The campaign isn't mind-blowing as it's basically just matches tied together with a story and timeline, but the arcade mode is brilliant and good for many hours of replayability.

Re: Thermal paste (grease, TIM, whatever...) recs

Two loop cleans ago I also ran out of TIM towards the end and ended up using no-name eBay white grease I bought in bulk (30g) under the CPU block. Used it for about nine months. Last re-do I swapped in Gelid Xtreme grease ($$) - for all of 2C. This time I used my usual ShinEtsu X23 ($), for the same...

I remember looking into this ages ago to run an old high-school PA setup from a laptop for Socials (dances). From memory it was a little Peavey thing that did the trick for us, I think we needed balanced XLRs from memory? Dunno, been years. I've also seen one of these things in action which does wha...

Re: Hexacore Build Case

For cheap and cheery no-bulldust, I like the Cougar MX330. You can find it on sale here (Australia) for $40, or often $80 with a 500W PSU (not recommended). There's two versions, a cheaper stamped-metal side one, and a windowed one which doubles the front I/O. Cheap enough to leave you room for a pa...

Good work mate, I've been checking in on your soda thread a bit - glad to see you're still sticking to your guns. I'm definitely aiming for a little less sugar and a little more exercise this year - get a couple more kilos off. My actual 'resolution', though, is to finally assemble a 3D printer my f...

Your first comment is so true but I've found if I use propylene glycol blocks and tubing stay pretty clean and you don't have to take the blocks apart. I tend to sell the custom parts with the hardware they are installed on and they pay for themselves'. Yep, automotive coolant gets a good rap over ...

Another 'custom looper' here mate. Kougar is spot on the money with regards to water vaporisation and galvanic corrosion. Won't be an issue if you're expecting a service life of just the warranty period, but they all dry up eventually. What's the budget? The bigger names in watercooling (XSPC, EKWB,...

I'm screaming '980Ti!' in my head, but what the hell is wrong with your pricing over there? I'm seeing them around the AUD$350 mark second-hand here in my usual haunts - rare for Australia to actually be leading on price, even for last-gen tech. One of those at a good price and you're golden. 1070 f...

8350K looks damn expensive - until I realised you're not really buying an i3 anymore.

Guess that'll be my new hotness for customer builds, as it's price parity with 7350K here.

8700K listings live in Australia this evening after work, converts out to USD$430 at the usual haunts. Deduct the GST (10%) plus Australia Tax (5%) it works out to be about USD$370.

I'll be interested to see how that compares to you guys across the pond!

Ran into a similar problem on my last build. New processor/board/RAM, system would not POST, no display, and the diagnostic LEDs suggested either CPU or RAM. And it was way past the return period. Reseated everything, tried RAM in every slot, moved things around, etc. Nothing works. Then the epipha...

Also, JAEs linking you to X399 gear, not X299.

I was eyeing off that board myself. From memory, the primary slot is the one with the heatsink over it under the southbridge. Whack it in there :)

Re: ExpressCard, is it still a thing?

The best thing you can do with ExpressCard is this!

I ran one of these because I needed four RS232 ports at one point - worked perfectly in that role, and was later repurposed with a quad NIC for a dirty temp server where it also worked beautifully.

There's a few types about, do recommend.

Re: 120mm Case Fan Recommendation?

The single-colour Thermaltake Riings go okay, but steer clear of their RGB units - the controllers are rubbish (n=9). Riing with the (included) Low-Noise Adapter would serve you well in that case. That said, I run NZXT Aer RGB gear now and don't really recommend them, either (n=8). Cougar make a nic...

They are fantastic. I used to have a 350D and got the custom kit for it. Still in service with my sister - amazing what those filters catch. The number of people running 'custom' gear in my family is dwindling a bit (thank God), but wherever it's still in service, it's with DEMCi filters. Couple of ...

I was sure there was an AC Ceramique paste and a Ceramique adhesive, too? Gotta be careful which one you get, if so! Most of the 'grey stuff' you buy now is all the same - I tend to buy Gelid Extreme, but only because it's usually on sale more than the rest. Noctua, Grizzly, AS - much of a muchness....

You've attributed a 'hard' number where there wasn't one, redocbew - and I didn't necessarily mean that AMD would 'bake in' all that performance either - nVidia shows less diligence in optimising older architectures for longer, is also a takeaway. AMD stuff currently just seems to age more gracefull...

And then in nine months when Pascal is all but forgotten, it'll sit at about 1080Ti performance. Isn't this the default performance profile of AMD GPUs lately? They're like good wine.

Wow, some brilliant feedback here folks and a lot of points I hadn't considered - thankyou very much. Seems 1151 is the general consensus, and the sound plan here. You love swapping hardware. Why would motherboard longevity be your most important criterion? If you're going to get a Kaby Lake processor with its two memory channels, it belongs on a Z270 LGA1151 motherboard. I like Gigabyte's GA-Z270MX-Gaming 5 , but there are other good options. Because Kaby La...

Hi Guys, So, an interesting development arises across the pond (Australia)... Tax time for us is June 30 onwards. Tax time for me this year will be good, as I finish my student (HECS) loans and have been paying voluntary tax to ensure a nice return. This gives me a 'spare' ~AU$1,500 (based on my tax...

My GSkill 2400 needed 1.65V to do its thing at XMP on X79 (this is stock, though). Try a little higher on the voltage? I always found X79 notoriously picky with RAM speeds - moreso on ASUS boards, particularly the Rampage ones - XMP was quite spotty for me. I had a lot of boards, loved X79. I can't ...

What JAE is saying is that 2 DIMMs may be easier on your processor's memory controller than 4 DIMMs, allowing you a bit more stability at higher XMP clocks.

Regardless, nice build.

Chances are if you've got an EliteBook and the GPU chipset wasn't expressly mentioned in the sales pitch ('NVIDIA 1GB Graphics' is a common one I see), it'll have an NVS something-or-other.
