Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I repaired an overstretched metal slinky - kid across the road stretched it so out of shape it wouldn't stand up any more. My brief internet searching came up blank, but I thought it was worth trying some basic blacksmithing / heat treatment. I tied it into shape as best I could with some stiff iron...

Re: Reviews that would suit Tech Report

Another couple of topic suggestions - I got a lot of great suggestions when I asked about NASes the other day, and it led me to discover several interesting options, like the computing power out there in retired server hardware. I think there are probably some good features to be written (or acquire...

Re: Nas solutions

120W was at the wall, idling but with the screen (onboard video HD4200 I think) running. With the video powered down it was closer to 100W, I think. There might be some gains with a pico PSU or a platinum certified PSU, but its a 65W CPU from a long time ago - 100W was the price of admission for AMD...

Nas solutions

I have been using a WD MyCloud 2TB for maybe three or four years. It has been useful enough as a basic fileserver, and a central repository for all my music and podcast and audio files. I wouldn't want to be without something doing this job. But it is not very configurable and the Twonky media serve...

Re: Laptop repair-worthiness

I've been thinking I should update this with the good news that this turned out to be repairable. The site of the damage in the pictures was actually the ribbon cable ripping away from the plastic 'male' end. It cost me <$50 australian to get the replacement ribbon sent from a US ebay seller, did th...

Thanks everyone. There are some sales on new laptops at the moment and it would be nice to upgrade a little. I'll have to see where the budget is at.

Laptop repair-worthiness

My Lenovo Helix got dropped, the screen panel and the motherboard popped and the screen data cable popped out at the screen end. The cable and the clip both look a bit damaged. Most repairers in my neighbourhood want ~$40-$80 for an appraisal, but I'd rather save that for the replacement laptop if i...

Ryzen economics

Hi all - Something Chrispy commented today on Ryzen 4-core pricing made me wonder about the economics of Ryzen as two-die + interposer vs a single larger die. Intuitively, I would guess that it's harder (= more expensive) to get a larger single-die going than to get two single dies off the productio...

Re: Soundbar vs. speakers

Btw Good feature of the Alesis is having power and volume for both speakers on the front of one. You probably won't want to leave the Amps running the whole time.

Havanu: I think maybe you were just looking at Rokit 4s? The Amps improve as you go up the range.

Re: Soundbar vs. speakers

Just want to float an idea - I've been very satisfied with powered bookshelf-type speakers from the low end (home studio) studio monitors. They have a very flat frequency response and are aiming to put out very true sound. Others may know better than I do whether the other suggestions here are actua...

Re: Usb3 headers on Gigabyte 970A ud3p

Thanks for the input and talking me down from a high risk approach. I should have a pcie port to spare, but it may be blocked by my sound card's daughterboard (and the other one already blocked by double-width cooler on GPU). I might follow up with the seller. If I cut, I will post pics and results....

Usb3 headers on Gigabyte 970A ud3p

Hi all, I just got one of those front panel Multi io things from eBay. It has 6 usb2 and 2 usb3.0 outputs. The usb2 stuff is going well, but the (alleged) USB 3 headers on the motherboard are 9-pin about a cm apart, while the plug is the now-standard 20-pin. I looked for an adapter with two usb3 nin...

I think my desktop speakers at home have a USB-in actually... If the problem is related to the linked one, additional hardware doesn't help apparently. But I'll def try that tonight.

No Playback Device installed

Hi Gerbils - I broke my laptop's sound a few weeks ago in Win8.1. I've upgraded to Win 10, but it didn't correct the problem. I was trying to update the sound driver for the Realtek hda chip and ran into some odd problems and tried a few things and am now stuck with 'No Playback Device Installed' an...

Hi Geonerd! Apologies for dropping out there. Child No2 arrived shortly after I posted this and I neglected to come back! Thanks very much for those excellent suggestions - I had not seen them. I've confirmed that the Quake Rally mod will run on the Raspberry Pi, but I think you have to either get a...

Re: Fails to (re-)start PCI board - aging Mobo?

Sorry - the tuner card is a PCI device with two tuner chips which are governed by a usb chip. There is a Kworld device with a similar approach. Temps in this system are generally pretty low, but every summer here we get half a dozen days where it is over 40C/104F, and then the internal temp will be ...

Fails to (re-)start PCI board - aging Mobo?

Hi gents, I have a tv tuner card (DVICO dual digital 4 - two DVB-T tuners through a USB - PCI bridge) in my Linux PVR box, built on an Asus M4A785T-M. I have it set to sleep (S5 - off, but waking on RTC alarm) and wake up to record shows, then sleep again if no one is using it. Randomly, but maybe e...

Kid's Racecar Sim

Hi all, This is a very open question: I have a spare screen, speakers, and a cheap steering wheel and I was thinking of rolling them into a little racing car sim for my son (he's turning three in July). My main contribution would be jigsawing and painting and gluing together a little seat / desk in ...

Re: I need your help Computer Engineers!

Look on Coursera. (coursera.org) It's heavy on computer science but if you're very interested in computing hardware (rather than algorithms or programming or compilers) 'Computer Architecture' and 'Computer Organization' have run in the past (and will probably run again in the future). Intro to Elec...

Hi Ronch - a couple I'd recommend that I recommend to everyone: The Stars My Destination - Alfred Bester. Hard to find a more aggressively page-turning novel. Seminal cyberpunk, in a lot of ways. Blindsight - Peter Watts. Pretty hard sf first contact novel about intelligibility and the nature of min...

Fave Coursera (or other) online courseware

I've been using Coursera on and off for a couple of years. Just recently I've enrolled in 'Computer Architecture' from David Wentzlaff (Princeton) and Algorithms II from Bob Sedgwick and Kevin Wayne. If you're into that sort of thing, these are pretty fine. I've been kicking myself that I didn't do ...

Re: New PSU for Antec Sonata III

Thanks gents. You're right that I should get over the passive cooling thing. The Seasonic G-360 looks good - plenty of praise for its low noise. The newegg power budget calculator estimates I don't need more than 345W, so that fits real nice and kentucky. It's about half the price too at A$100 deliv...
