Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Already got a quote for how much it would cost to repair (around $30-$50), I suppose MSI will repair that? Or some third party? If the latter, would love to know how they do that. I mean, the trace looks pretty damaged. They will put in a new trace? Or bypass it with something like a trace cable? T...

Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Got my PC up and running with the Ryzen 5 3600, MSI B450 Tomahawk Max motherboard and a 16GB Crucial kit. Seems like new system is fine so far. After taking the old motherboard out, I found what seems to be a small burnt trace near an IC above the main PCIe (x16) slot, so I'm guessing it's the main ...

Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Yeah, I was thinking that it's a waste to get faster kits other than what the CPU/MOBO could handle at stock (which is 2666 MHz AFAIK), but faster kits is not really that more expensive and it's even getting harder to find 2666 MHz below kits. Maybe I should just consider getting faster ones then. ...

I'm not an iPhone user and this might be irrelevant because either you can't do it or you've tried it already but is there no way for you to disable auto-connect for the iDrive and/or Apple Car Play?

I've always used Bulk Rename Utility for renaming multiple files quickly. I'm sure it can be used for folders as well.

Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

Would a Ryzen 2600 and a B450 motherboard be a reasonable choice? The processor is priced similarly and the motherboard would be less expensive than the Intel option. Memory prices have come down so that 2x8 GiB of PC4-28800 (DDR4-3600) is priced attractively (US$105 for G.Skill F4-3600C19D-16GSXKB...

Re: Upgrading CPU, motherboard & RAM.

No, I'm actually in Malaysia. If you're looking for sites to browse, look at Lazada and Shopee though I should warn you that their search engine is quite horrid by modern standards. I can get some stuff on Amazon (some products do ship here) but I'll have to check the tax fees at the payment page.

Re: Interesting app behaviour change in latest W10.

I didn't think UWP apps go into suspended mode this quick in previous version though or am I wrong here? I've noticed it happening from 1803 onwards, although I don't know if its more due to the fact that Task Manager also shows a green leaf icon to indicate this, or whether the behaviour actually ...

Also, as I said earlier, the Photos app was notorious in hogging memory even if it was suspended in prior to 1809.

Interesting app behaviour change in latest W10.

This is more of a discussion than a question thread but I've noticed that the bundled UWP apps now go into suspended mode if they are minimized in W10 1809. If you check in Task Manager, apps like Groove, Films & TV, Photos , Maps & Mail all go into suspended mode and use very few memory in ...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

The only thing I would be wary about is that the free drive cloning software provided by Crucial (a version of Acronis True Image) doesn't do a true clone, it changes the disk identifier and the volume serial numbers. RealVNC did not like this. Actually, it even changed the size of the MSR partitio...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

Honestly a little hard to believe you held out until 2018. I understand not everyone has access to these components, or (necessarily) the funds to acquire them, but SSDs have been the norm for a long while now. Believe it. SSDs aren't really norm yet here, considering we don't get deals as good as ...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

Here's a real thing to worry about: While you should always make sure that critical data are backed up no matter what kind of storage device you use, the failure mode of SSDs is often different than hard drives. In many situations, hard drives will give you all kinds of warnings that they are dying...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

Be careful of whiplash from the speed. Congrats! Congrats on getting ~11 years out of your old HDD as well. That's pretty good! It's an old WD Blue 320 GB. Back then, I think manufacturers really make things to last, at least compared to these days. I suspect it won't last much longer though ...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

If you're running Windows 10, it won't let you defrag it, so no worries there. And you'd have to write MASSIVE amounts of data to the drive before worrying about it wearing out, so again, no worries. So, it's not any time soon(ish) that I should be worried about? Good to know. Be careful of whiplas...

Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

So I just got my first SSD installed. This is to replace my aging primary HDD (about 11 years now IIRC). I got the Crucial MX 500 250GB from Amazon, which is crazy because even plus shipping and everything, it's still cheaper compared to getting one in my country. I got this drive because I've seen ...

Re: Game Stuttering With FPS Drops After Windows 10 Creators Update

I only seem to have issues with Bethesda software. Both Skyrim SE and Fallout 4 work fine with solid 60fps and then after an hour slowly start getting more and more laggy till I save, close and restart the game then it is fine again. I like the new windows 10 since it shows how much video ram is in...

I think there were problems with the overlay specifically, not Afterburner, when W10 was first released (in 2015) but it doesn't linger more than a couple months (probably).

Re: Game Stuttering With FPS Drops After Windows 10 Creators Update

MSI Afterburner is pretty much anti-crapware IMO. It serves its purpose with aplomb and bundles no junk. Am I missing something? It's one of the first things I install if I'm doing any GPU tweaking... I agree with this... Honestly, I don't think it's (mostly) Windows FCU or CU causing the issues. T...

Re: Game Stuttering With FPS Drops After Windows 10 Creators Update

I don't think I'm in the minority but I've never had any problems gaming with the Creators Update (or Fall Creators Update). And yes, I know me sharing this might not be helpful, but I don't think the issue is the Creators Update itself, there could be thousands of other possible culprit.

If those 2 are what you've considered, then just go with whatever you want and have the games you want. Re: Can we talk about Doki Doki Literature Club?

I played the game last month or so, because I've seen a lot of discussions about it. After playing the game myself and replaying (almost necessary to do so) a couple times, I can see the hype around it. It's kinda funny in it's own way.
