Re: 2nd monitor hook up

I think it depends on the video card, in that they need separate hardware clocks to run legacy connections like DVI at different resolutions. That should only be an issue with low end cards though; the 960 should have no problem running both those displays and a third one all at different resolution...

I wasn't talking about WWII era cars, but since you bring it up, surely ENIAC could at least handle Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

Lots of non-user/owner commentary on this thread so far. I've used an Acer XB280HK (28" TN gsync), a dell P2715Q (27" IPS), a Crossover 44K (40" MVA), a BenQ BL3201PH (32" IPS), and a Philips BDM4065UC (40" MVA). There's not much to say, really, except it's early days still...

Re: Afterburner and a HD6950

If you want to try and get some more life out of the 6950, take off the heat sink, clean it out, and re-apply the thermal paste. Also, set up a custom fan curve in Afterburner to fix the fan not spinning up fast enough. The 970 should be a noticeable upgrade. I don't expect nvidia's prices to be muc...

Filtered 1080p is 1080p scaled to 2160p with a stupid pointless bilinear filter added just to piss me off.* Unfiltered 1080p would be simple nearest-neighbor scaling without any extra pointless blurring. What are you using that applies this filter? I use both Plex and VLC to view 1080p content on h...

Re: 4K, how is this going to work???

I was not wrong, as far as I can tell. Buying a Mac will not add an unfiltered 1080p mode to any PC monitor. Furthermore, if a Mac can display unfiltered 1080p on any 4K monitor it's not actually running in 1080p mode. I don't even need to look into this to know it's true, because as I correctly sta...

Just get a better cooler for like $20-$30 so you don't have to listen to the stock intel fan any more. Those things aren't very loud, but good lord are they annoying.

Re: 4K, how is this going to work???

That's a myth. Everyone assumes that because 1080p could be scaled perfectly that it will be, and that is not the case. I have 3 4K monitors and not one of them offers the option of unfiltered 1080p scaling. Get a Mac. Retina 1080p. You know, once I realized a GTX 980 was fast enough for 97% of gam...

Re: Irritating complications using screen mirroring...

You should set one of the displays to a different refresh rate and see if mirroring still works. If it does, it should "fix" the fact that the tearing line is in the same place every frame by moving it up or down at a rate proportional to the refresh rate mismatch. Turning off vsync in the...

Re: Win 8.1: Seperate display scaling per monitor?

I don't currently have multiple monitors connected, but I was under the impression you might be able to just drag the dialog to different monitors to change the setting for each one. Never tried it though. Crazy solution: Use DSR to run the 1200p display at 3840x2400. Edit: I take it you meant 23.5&...

Far Cry 4 has at least 4 frames of lag built into the game. Fully cranking the settings at 4K will make it fall off the memory cliff on a 4GB card, and at ~2FPS you can count frames of lag by eye.

The card manufacturers are still competing against each other for the best selling / most profitable 980 Ti. Other 980 Ti's were always going to be the main competition for any specific 980 Ti design, as potential customers have probably already settled on a GPU by the time they start comparing cool...

I'm not sure about the project (never tried anything like this), but ATX power supplies will power on when you short one particular pin on the 24-pin connector to a ground pin, if I remember correctly. I think that's what motherboards do as well. This. My EVGA PSU came with a cap for the 24-pin con...

Did you actually open the power supply and clean it out? When I cleaned this system out I tried blowing the crap out of the PSU from the outside, but it was ineffective. I had to open it up to clean it out. All of the components that weren't in the main airflow path were completely encased in dust b...
