Re: Summer Project

You should make your own blog, dude. It would be more fitting for such one-way communication. You could even let people subscribe to it or post updates in your Twitter. Or even put your own podcasts to it and YouTube videos of you doing stuff. Just saying. Why do you feel so threatened by on...

Re: Choosing a CPU cooler

@Nec_V20 - I have no problem with calling heatpipe CPU coolers "air coolers". They're still used like a conventional (no liquid) air cooler, in that you don't need hoses, a pump, or a separately mounted radiator. I wasn't trying to disagree with you, just adding my personal experience. I ...

Re: Choosing a CPU cooler

That's quite a useful summation, thank you. I have a question that's been bothering me the past few years - why haven't liquid-cooled GPUs become more mainstream? By mainstream, I mean AIO designs that I can just plug and play (the way I can just buy Antec Kuhler or Corsair Hydro for the CPU)? The ...

Re: Choosing a CPU cooler

For the past 3-4 years my attitude has been "just slap a CoolerMaster heatpipe cooler on it and be done with it". They're inexpensive, much quieter than the stock air coolers, perform well, and (now that I have been using them for a few years) I can also state from personal experience tha...

Choosing a CPU cooler

So you have been looking around reading reviews, watching YouTube and you are pretty confused with regard to CPU coolers. What's all the fuss about? Simply put, the hotter the CPU runs the shorter its lifespan will be. One should not be led astray by anyone talking about "safe" temperature...

I also appreciate the little tidbits there on SCSI - thankyou. As someone younger who's never really touched it (well, short of pulling some old drives and cards out of decommissioned rigs or rigs I'm updating for others) the part about the controllers interests me a lot, as I just don't understand...

Re: Corsair Watercooler H60 lack of screws

[*] The thing is that I didn't buy the water coolers for the sake of overclocking but rather because I just don't like big effing clunky coolers in my system. The water cooler takes the heat where I want it to be disposed of as I see fit, it is as simple as that. in the HAF X I have the H80 running...

Re: Considering i7-980

As you can see from my profile, I have an i7-990x, and I was looking around for my friend to see what kind of system he could put together that would perform well but not kill his wallet. I looked at the likes of the 965x but then looked at the cost - and availability - of motherboards and it was pr...

Re: Corsair Watercooler H60 lack of screws

vargis14, first off the bat, I don't overclock. Not that I am religious about it, it's just that up to now I haven't had the need to. I have two systems running at the moment and I am building a third for myself: 1) Main machine, Core I7-990x with a Corsair H80 - Chassis CoolerMaster HAF X 2) NAS bo...

Update to selling off the fans that came with the H100 (and the one with the H60) and the two CoolerMaster fans. Re: Summer Project

Just bought the next load of stuff to go into the HAF XB and that is the cooling fans and the 240 mm watercooler. I went for the Corsair H100i watercooler which I got for $127.5 For the fans I went with a) 3* Noctua NF-F12 120mm PWM fans (2 for the H100i to replace the ones that come with it and one...

Re: Starting to think of building a fast folding system/serv

I have found the summer months to be the best time to buy hardware as the demand goes down worldwide because normal people (not troglodytes like us) are spending their money on things like holidays. I have found it to be the best time to look for bargains over the years.

CoolerMaster HAF XB - the good and not so good

Let me start off with the not so good because it is a pretty major niggle. The general lack of mesh on the side panels and back panel. I don't think that there is an excuse for this because CoolerMaster did get hammered for the lack of dust proofing on their HAF 922 and reacted to that with extensiv...

Re: Overclocking the Core i7 processors

I have the i7-990x and if you want to overclock that then you have to disable HyperThreading in the BIOS. Just running it in idle with no overclock the difference in core temps is between three and four degrees Celsius lower with HT disabled. Having said that I am a fish out of water on this section...

Re: Summer Project

I do not recomend you build the whole PC using this aproach. I would say you have already bought more PSU than you can use. 150 bucks is a lot to spend on a power supply if you only need 400 watts of power. You should have some idea what the total system will look like before buying components. You...

Ah, you just want to build for the fun of it? :) If you don't already, get all your home data on a NAS or permanent server somewhere and just mess around with your PC's at home. That way you get to tinker and when you get bored of it you should sell it and start new with the budget. Losing money (i...

Re: Summer Project

I would never build a PC to sell at cost in the UK; Ebay is absolutely drowning in "sold-at-cost" machines Companies like Zoostorm and e-machines offer desktops at seemingly less than cost, no doubt thanks to economies of scale. Unless you are approached by someone and you offer to build ...

Re: Corsair Watercooler H60 lack of screws

That might be a good upgrade then- I like the Noctua fans, but I haven't been able to justify the expense, given that my system works well now. A single fan, though, would be pretty effective, and if it's not enough I could always put the Corsair fan back on in tandem. Thanks for the idea! I think ...

Re: Corsair Watercooler H60 lack of screws

I believe I considered doing that, but with my enclosure and the H60 at least, I had plenty of room inside. Now, if I were to put an H80i in, or get a second fan for the H60 (which I probably should), putting one of the fans on the outside does make sense. It's not worth it to put a second fan on t...

Re: Corsair Watercooler H60 lack of screws

When I had mine, I actually mounted the fan outside the case (with a fan grill) and sandwiched the metal top of the case between the fan and radiator. Didn't look all that great, but there was alot more room to work with inside by getting the 120mm fan out of the case. I believe I considered doing ...
