Re: Gaming Audio for Dummies, Help?

As far as I understand Creative bought out and killed A3D. And that's it. There are other companies that are developing and have developed similar solutions for simulating 3D audio for 2 channels (rather than virtualising surround sound (ie. more than 2 channel), which also uses HRTF). But most deve...

Re: Gaming Audio for Dummies, Help?

Try out Razer Surround. Software virtual surround sound not tied to hardware. Does a way better job than Dolby Headphone on Xonar cards. I haven't tried Creative's, but see many who prefer Razer over that too. You can tune it (somewhat) to you ears as well. It makes itself look like a 7.1 channel au...

Re: External Soundcards

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. I've had no issues with it at all, including drivers. Very happy with it, use it for my monitors, mic, and dabbling in Ableton. 2i2 looks to be the same with fewer outs. The headphone out is not bad at all, but I use ODAC+O2 for my cans (including gaming thanks to Raz...

Re: Music streaming/Spotify/Google Play

I use Google. I agree mobile is good, desktop not so much. I don't mind about not having offline files on desktop though - solid uncapped internet. I used to be annoyed with needing to have a browser tab open but then I got in the habit of just keeping it my left-most tab at all times and got used t...

Re: Alexander film Persian Speech before battle of Gaugamela

I know a little bit of Farsi, but can't really pick anything over Alexander's speech. Doesn't sound like Farsi for what it's worth; kinda sounds like made-up shouting to me. Wouldn't be surprised judging the quality of the film based on that clip!

Re: Active monitors for desktop

I had been more or less happy with my M-Audio AV40s for years, but I'm getting a tickle in the back of my knee that tells me they might spontaneously give out this year. The one fault I would find with them is the lack of low-end bass - not that it was unexpected, I was aware of it when I bought th...

Re: Active monitors for desktop

I've got the E4.5s [<- Cerwin Vega XD8s <- Focusrite Scarlett 2i4]. Really happy with them but don't have any experience with other monitors to compare.. just my cans. The sub isn't needed with these for music to sound good, but of course does fill out the very bottom (and helps increase the clarity...

Re: Dear avast, i'm done with ya

I had the same problem with avast a couple years ago - got quite spammy and annoying. Have come back to it for a few months on Win 10 and it's actually really good at staying low key. You do need to initially configure things a bit though. I've had nothing like what you've described. Windows' built ...

Re: BenQ XR3501 / Acer Z35 / Acer X34

Certainly not impossible, just hard and expensive :D I run BF4 maxed out pretty much constantly under 8.3ms. For ULMB (or equivalent) to really shine you need v-sync on, which I do with fps capped at 120. That has its negatives for sure, but for me it's minimal, and doesn't stopping you topping the ...

Re: BenQ XR3501 / Acer Z35 / Acer X34

I'm looking to get a new monitor too, and 21:9 @ 1440p seems like it would be perfect, but sadly no ULMB on the X34 or the announced ASUS equivalent. Probably because even if overclocked to 100Hz the panels aren't fast enough I guess. For me motion clarity is too important to sacrifice in the games ...

Re: So what are you using for computer audio?

JBL LSR305 x2 :D hooboy these might be the best speakers you can buy for the price! got the pair for just 200$! I was planning to get these, but in NZ they were horribly priced relative to competition. Like in the $400USD category, double E4.5s, where I think in the US/UK they're much closer.. Chea...

Re: So what are you using for computer audio?

I've got PreSonus Eris E4.5 'studio' monitors + a Cerwin Vega XD8s sub, via a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Really happy with this setup. The E4.5s are excellent bang for buck, and do very well without the sub for their size. I may some day go to a Yamaha HS setup, but I think there isn't much point upgra...

Re: Virtual surround sound for gaming

Yeah that demo is perhaps aimed at kids or peeps with weak headphones who hear the over-done bass and think it's amazing because of that... Sounds nothing like that when you have it set up properly and in game. Sadly I think they have some bass boost that you can't switch off in the demo version ava...

Virtual surround sound for gaming

Any of you tried Razer Surround? I've given it a go after years using Dolby Headphone on my Xonar STX and for me its miles better for positioning. Slight deterioration in quality but nothing significant for gaming. DH does a good job of simulating a 5.1 speaker system in a room, but that's the probl...

Re: Install Thread for My New GTX 980 Warp Nacelles...

Congrats on your upgrade :D [ no catching up with you now] You probably don't want to overvolt more than what afterburner allows if you are folding. OCing a GPU for folding 24/7 is a very different beast to OCing for gaming, at least in my limited experience. Easy as to get a 'stable' OC for ...

Re: Thinking of Moving to Nvidia for Rendering and F@H

Re folding: my 2x 780Tis seemed to take a thread each - the CPU slot was auto configured to use 10/12 threads. But 970/980s will pump out so much more PPD to what you have been seeing that the drop in CPU output will seem very insignificant  PPD from a 970/980 seems very good form the quick lo...

Re: TRFrankenbot 2014 - Unofficially Official Thread

#61 producer overall now. Should easily break into the top 50. 1.6M yesterday :D If that's sustained Frankie will be a top 30 producer. If all TR team production went into Frankie, he(it?) would be a top 10 producer :o I'd say a big part of that dip in production at the start of the month would be ...

Re: TRFrankenbot 2014 - Unofficially Official Thread

Thanks for that. Looking at the FAH forums, it seems the new Assignment Server may be behind x17 WUs not being dished out. Sounds like they are looking into it and may have fixed it now. Hope so; my GPUs' output will go up 3-4x with x17, which should give Frankie a much needed boost.

Re: What are you guys folding with?

Since when? I remembered last year when I got x17's on my 660 the CPU usage dropped quite a bit. It was the x15's that needed a full core. Then you're mixed up! I'm looking right now at my systems. x15 project on a 750 Ti requires <1% of the CPU. An x17 project on my 480 FTW requires 15% of a...

Re: What are you guys folding with?

I haven't seen an x16 or any other type of GPU WU since the beginning of the year. As far as I can tell, they have the pipeline fully packed with x17 WUs. Edit: I should also add that errant x17 WUs seem to be fewer in number of late, too. In the first few months of the year, I was seeing an occasi...

Re: What are you guys folding with?

Yeah, seems the numbers folding are down a lot. Maybe people are less willing to fork out for the extra power use. And the extra heat & noise would turn many off. Some maybe were pulled away by crypto mining.. Some have definitely switched to other distributed computing projects. I think many pe...

Haha, perhaps not the best thread title :D But now my time folding t-shirts will be drastically reduced :) I'm running an over-the-top 4930K + 2x GTX 780 Ti system, overclocked under water. I don't know if there is already a thread for this, but I thought it'd be kinda cool to see what kinda hardware everyone is folding with - number of machines/specs/cooling etc.. I imagine there's quite a range of gear folding for the team... ancient - new, low end - high end, server stuff..

That's crazy awesome Fuzzhead. You're gonna be in the top 100 users VERY soon. I'm aiming for a tenth of that total this year, and hopefully be in the top 10 for TR. Only got until the end of September before I have to stop folding because it will get too hot here. My rig's cooling is up for it, but...
