Re: my Oculus Rift mini-review

@sparkman Is there any way for someone else to see what you're seeing through the goggles? Wherever you look in VR is also visible in 2-D on your regular screen, for other people to watch. This is handy when trying to give advice to the player. Look at the red button... press X... turn left... no, ...

Re: my Oculus Rift mini-review

9) The included Xbox controller is an OK control solution for now, but takes a bit of training because you can't see it when you are in VR. Then a game tells you to press the A button, which you can't see. But after a few hours of that, you get every button memorized. 10) A weightless, floating-in-s...

Also, congratulations on getting your review out before TR's, which they've had in their lab since April 11th...[/url] Hopefully 2 months isn't the new norm around here... They are developing new, professional-grade, VR benchmarks with a brand new reporting team. All I did was give my first impress...

my Oculus Rift mini-review

1) Wow 2) Wow 3) The "presence" thing you keep hearing about, is real. We all keep fighting the urge to grab objects with our hands and/or wander off into the scenery. 4) The Rift feels light. I would not describe it as even remotely heavy. Granted it has only been a few hours. 5) So far m...

Re: Are 144hz G-sync displays worth it?

Another factor for adaptive sync will be future games, but before your next hardware upgrade.

If you buy a GTX 1080 today it will crush everything. But in two years, you might want to play Doom 2018 or whatever and you might be happy to have G-sync keeping your 30 fps smooth.

Re: Tech Report State of the Union

Re: i5-4590 vs my i7-4770K, must I upgrade for Oculus Rift?

Right, I prefer the 16 GB with it's much greater ability to cache web pages etc. Giving up half my memory for a tiny percentage speed increase sounds like a downgrade to me. Granted, if I built a similar system today, I would certainly buy faster than 1333, but at the time, 1333 was a top-of-the-lin...

Re: i5-4590 vs my i7-4770K, must I upgrade for Oculus Rift?

Your GTX 770 is on par with the GTX960 in performance. The GTX960 scores as VR capable in the Steam VR Test. Sure the GTX970 is 30% faster, but if it were me, I'd be testing with the GTX770 before buying a $300 stop-gap. The news today says that consumer Pascal could come as early as July. If Pasca...

Re: i5-4590 vs my i7-4770K, must I upgrade for Oculus Rift?

I have an i7-4770K, which was great when I bought it, but which is starting to get old. Going back to your first about your i7-4770K, and looking at the complete specs of your build it is possible your "16 GB DDR3 1333" might be holding up your i7-4770K since Intel recommends DDR3-1600 as...

Re: i5-4590 vs my i7-4770K, must I upgrade for Oculus Rift?

gz :D . Assuming the rest of your rig passes the compatibility checker , when the Rift ships you should have a good idea whether the Polaris/GCN 4.0 GPUs are imminent or if not whether you can just get a R9 290 (for dirt cheap) to tide you over :) My preordered Rift should arrive in about 3 to 7 we...

I have an i7-4770K, which was great when I bought it, but which is starting to get old. What? I have a i7-4770k its far from nonrelevant. Its an quad core i7! Hell I have a i7-950 still in operation that would run circles around some chips! However, according to the compatibility checker it passes....

I pre-ordered a Rift! My estimated ship date is May.

Hopefully by May, the new AMD GPU's will be out and I can become FreeSync-compatible as a bonus. (In preparation for some future screen upgrade.)

That's what I thought but I like to double-check myself.

I haven't kept up with Intel's releases since I did the 4770 build a few years back.

i5-4590 vs my i7-4770K, must I upgrade for Oculus Rift?

I have an i7-4770K, which was great when I bought it, but which is starting to get old.

How do you think the i7-4770K compares to the i5-4590 that Oculus recommends for the Rift headset? Should I upgrade my CPU, or can I get away with only upgrading my GPU?

Re: +3 Upvotes are Useless

You can argue that the votes don't matter. If you believe the votes don't matter, then you should ignore the voting system completely. And not worry about who has +1 or who has +3. I think the votes do matter. They are a simple, informal way of gauging the public opinion regarding a post. And yes, I...

Re: AMD hits 5GHz

It's not even cheaper than the Intel competition (4770k and 4670k), which is usually AMD's selling point these days. I can only think of two possible, very niche markets, for this product: 1) People who care about some rare corner case where AMD is faster than Intel. (Are there any of these corners...

but I know there are a great many servers and HPC systems that sit with their CPUs running near throttling temperatures 24/7 for years on end That's true, but that's part of why server chips cost more. Intel qualifies the server silicon at a higher level suited for 24/7 operation. Desktop chips don...

I upgraded my 4770K from the stock heatsink to a Hyper 212 EVO. The same Prime95 (Small FFT's Torture Test) as above now peaks at 52°C. If I add Unigine Valley on top of Prime95, the CPU gets up to 59°C. All of this with only a quiet whirring from the three fans in the case (2 case fans, 1 fan on th...

Can you help me understand the i7-4770K temperatures I'm seeing? For example, I just ran Prime95 (Small FFT's Torture Test) and the Asus Probe II Sense app reported 79°C for the CPU and 31°C for the motherboard (an Asus Z87-A, stock cooling, no overclocks). 79°C sounds like a normal CPU temperature ...

Although dust is not clear.

Great suggestions. The clear acrylic case is disturbingly tempting. I think the Antec Nine Hundred Two v3 suggested by JustAnEngineer is exactly what I'm looking for. About the same size as the 300 but far flashier. Perfect for impressing my kids.

LED lights are great. I want a flashy case, maybe with a windowed side so I can add completely-unnecessary lights to the interior.
