It really doesn't matter when you flash your bios, but before is a good idea since many problems that might have come up could be fixed from the bios update. You should not have to defrag after you install since the files are not that fragmented, but if you do, it should be quick.
I remember a mod like that, the more you kill the less weapons you get. You might want to check Planetquake's mod list or the previous mod features they used to have.
Post your system specs. I've been playing Quake2 begining on a Pentium Pro with a 4mb Vid card, migrated to a Dual-Voodoo2 and then now to a Geforce 2.
There is no performance difference between Retail and OEM, they are the same chip. If anything, they oem would be better since you can buy your own high performance heat sink and keep it cooler.

I turn off all my clicking. Go to Sound and Multimedia from the control panel and disable the "Start Navigation" sound (start.wav) from Internet Explorer in there. No more clicks when you click links or a page changes
