The Radeon Custom Resolution setting's Hz adjustment didn't stick at all, and while CRU allowed the additional Hz options to show up in Window 10's Monitor Setting section, the Dell U2412M monitor itself seems to be resisting it. I have installed the driver for the monitor, but that didn't help. Err...
Late update guys, but I finally figured it out. I disabled the "Fast startup" in Windows 10 power option along with using "Enable Deep Sleep in S4/S5" in the BIOS. It finally disabled the fans when the PC is shutdown.
I use power strips with a switch. One fell swoop, and also the monitor is really off. Hmm... the old PSUs with an IEC output were actually a decent idea. I had completely forgotten about those. Did the ATX standard kill them off? I think it was only AT boards that had the side-by-side power connect...
I am using 6x 80mm USB powered fans along with PWM case fans, and those USB fans will still run even after shutting down the computer. I have looked through BIOS options in my ASRock B450m Pro4 mobo to set the mobo to turn off USB power when the computer is turned off, but can't seem to find it. I w...
IMO, you should probably do an extended test to really make sure 3200 MHz is actually 100% stable with a 24-hour Memtest86. I've been running 8 hour stability test sessions with the memtesthelper (usually gets to around 1500%-1700% passes by that point by spamming multiple instances of HCI MemTest ...
I have this same board (for all of 3 days now) and some Vulcan Z DDR4 3200. It absolutely refuses to run at the XMP setting, in fact I can't get the RAM over PC2866 speed. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450M%20Pro4/index.asp#Specification It seems that "PC3200" RAM is quite picky about mo...

Long live legacy COM ports! Yep, after looking at my motherboard's manual again, it's indeed the classic serial COM port. Maybe that motherboard can still communicate with 1990's industrial control systems over RS-232 instead of using a daisy chain of dongles to get a laptop to talk to one of...
Never mind, I figured out the problem. I plugged the pins into the "COM1" header because the pin layout matched the one in the manual. Turned out there was another header with the same exact pin layout in the corner of the mobo with the actual power, reset, HD activity light and etc pins.

I have 2x MasterFan Pro 140 Air Pressure that I purchased for $5 each from Amazon (will have to run them at low RPM ranges after reading about high noise and vibration), 2x 120mm fans that came with the case, 2x 80mm axial fans that I am considering using for the upper frontal air intake on top of t...
I noticed that the screws included with the retail packaging were slightly too large to fit through the rubber holes without significant force, and they were too short to even extend through the rubber mount. Was this an oversight by CM, or did Amazon ship me a counterfeit one? https://i.imgur.com/o...
At least how it was originally designed for Vista and Win 7, Readyboost was intended to only work on the primary drive (the system drive with Windows on it) and disables itself if that is a SSD (that is, the WEI disk score is over 5.9). It may well work if the SSD is a secondary drive, but performa...
My upcoming plan is to have an SSD be used for the boot drive, and then install Steam and all of my games on a HDD. I was wondering if I could use 60-80GB of flash drives as a Ready Boost for the HDD (or some sort of a DIY hybrid drive)? Alternatively, would it be suboptimal to have the HDD + flash ...
I just scavenged another 3 free used HDDs, so that leaves me with 500GB, 2x 320GB, 160GB and 80GB. Four of them will be backups or cold standby replacements when one of them starts to die. I expect them to die early, so I'll adjust my backup schedule for that assumption. I just confirmed that there ...
The Spectre and Meltdown mitigations have caused plenty of overclocking headaches So just an update, I used InSpectre to disable both mitigations and reinstalled XTU, but that didn't seem to do a whole lot. And I learned that apparently the CPU core stable voltage is less than -50mV after experienc...
Apparently this issue only occurs when the updated microcode does not match the BIOS microcode, and of course by now these systems are so old that they are no longer receiving BIOS updates. The last BIOS update was from 2015 for that laptop, about the time when the OEM recommended to not upgrade to...
I wasn't exactly sure where to post this as it does cover mobile, CPU undervolting, Windows 10 update and XTU update. Previously I was running on a -69 mV undervolt for the core and cache of my laptop's i7-4500U on Windows 10 1809 version, using XTU 4.4. I updated to Windows 10's 1903 version with t...
What are the temperatures and clock speeds of the CPU and GPU like, both in normal operation and under stress test conditions? If they're too high, the TIM isn't okay; if they're fine, it is. I'm a bit confused about this question, TBH: trying do the work already (with its risks) implies that it ne...
would be safe to assume that the OEM's thermal paste is good enough with that much pressure applied to it? What are the temperatures and clock speeds of the CPU and GPU like, both in normal operation and under stress test conditions? If they're too high, the TIM isn't okay; if they're fine, it is. ...
I have a four years old Acer Travelmate P645-MG laptop. I originally intended on replacing the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU, only to discover that I can't remove any of the heatsink/heatpipe's screws as the screwdriver keeps slipping out. If I can't safely remove the heatsink without stripping t...
I've been able to install the April Update on an Nehalem-era laptop (almost 10 years old) on the first try. And my 4 year old laptop isn't playing nice. On a plus side, I think I was able to install KB4093105 by repeatedly manually installing it (and running auto maintenance, sfc /scannow and disk c...
I am unable to install Cumulative Update (KB4093105), manually or through Windows Update. Windows Update keeps prompting me to "Restart to install" and the start menu gives the "update and restart" and "update and shutdown" options. The automatic way results in nothing ...
Turns out it was a bad SD card that was flooding Event Viewer with the bad blocks error messages, and I was using that card for the File History backup. About a month ago, the files on the card were corrupted. I simply reformatted the SD card and continued using it. Well, I guess it's broken enough ...
