Re: Is freelancing supposed to be this hard or do I just suc

I'm starting out as a freelance software developer, and I'm finding many things quite intimidating. ... I feel that somehow there's still so few jobs out there that I'm confident I can do, so is there something wrong with me? This is a pretty big topic. IMHO, though, you are making a misstep on thi...

Re: Warning: What happens when...

Wow. Back when CD ROM drives were making the climb from 1x and 2x to like 50x, you'd hear legends of things like this happening if you exceeded a CDRs speed rating. I've never actually seen a CD shatter or fly apart due to speed or vibration. Maybe in this case it wouldn't have happened except for a...

Re: SSD only or Hard drive and SSD?

This is just anecdotal but at work most new workstations are fielded with one SSD and no HDDs. I don't think we've had any more issue with them than we had with the HDD-only days. At home, we have 3 PCs with one SSD and no HDDs that we've been using for a couple years now. No issues. (Except that I ...

Re: Hotel Wifi Question/Experiment

I'm on the road and am staying at a Marriott-branded hotel. Free wifi available, but the speeds are really hardly enough to fairly stream video (intentional I'm sure). Yeah. I recently learned about that too on a business trip to Baltimore. Eight of us were having breakfast in our Hilton and had a ...

Re: Mechanical Keyboard decision help

I went through a similar ordeal a year ago. I bought a switch tester kit, went to Fry's and banged on stuff, and really agonized over it. I now have: * Work: Das Model S Ultimate (Cherry MX Browns) w/ red 40 A-L O-rings on from WASD Keyboards. After years of complaints, the joy of being an elitist f...

Re: Are all sports stars thugs?

That's pretty disappointing but this is an area where you'll probably find what you go looking for. When Peyton Manning was with the Colts, people called proudly him "Mr. Indianapolis". People here LOVE the $#!+ out of their Colts. The dude was viewed - and by some still is - as mini Capta...

Re: Good tips on drying out a keyboard?

This is not a suggestion, just a data point: I spilled some Coke on my Das Silent Ultimate, which was already pretty crusty from years of eating lunch at my desk. The dried syrup make the number pad practically unusable. I ended up going with pop lore - pulled the keys, ran it through the dishwasher...

My current wallet, which is the slimmest and probably best I've ever had. Like all wallets, they eventually wear out but you can buy a few to have on-hand for cheap. They even make quite an assortment of fashion models if you don't like basic black.

Re: Should I use SQL Joins in this situation?

To kind of explain the "this is not what joins are for" comment - that code won't do what you're hoping. Consider this example: tblBank tblCash ----------------------- -------------------------- 20151002, "Food", 5.00 20151002, "Clothes", 55.00 20151002, "Car"...

I'm looking at the Mazda 3 s. How well do those do holding together over Michigan winters? Do they get to 200,000 miles easily without a lot of repairs and upkeep? I actually graduated from RCHS up around you. BR is probably more civilized but all my family drove quarter and half ton pickups and SU...

Re: When Curbs Attack

So how many Toyota's and Honda's have you had that have gone over 1,600,000 kms? My family has had 4 GM's that have wrapped that (Silverado, Buick Regal, Buick Park Avenue, Cavalier), with nothing more than regular maintenance. Uh... 1.6m km? Almost 1m miles in a car? And doing so 4 times? I don't ...

Re: When Curbs Attack

No traction control, and at first it was more of a 2-wheel skid after a bump. The front maintained traction for a little longer (it was around a turn). I know it won't prevent stupidity but I'd like traction control for my next car. I am not a car expert but, IMO, you're overplaying the role TC mig...

I drove a 1.2 litre Fiat Punto "Selecta" CVT for a while. [snip!] A bit like this one. In researching Foresters, I came upon Mighty Car Mods and got hooked. This totally reminds me of one of the cars they'd refurb. There's something really cool to me about the idea of doing those kinds of...

Re: Car recommendations

CVTs that simulate discrete gears still sound completely nuts to me. If your perspective is "if you want real gears, just get real gears" then I understand! It's still useful, as LHR says when the auto is hesitating and hunting and your passing window is *now*, you just tap that button to...

On the other hand, from the videos I've seen, those CVTs are really nice. And you get paddle shifters in the EX. (Though yeah, paddle shifters on a CVT - wut?) I'm not really sure what your understanding of CVTs are if you're saying they are "nice". Most enthusiasts seem to hate CVTs beca...

Re: Car recommendations

In terms of infrastructure, it depends to some extent on EV adoption in your area, I think. Some of the issues described might also be specific to the eGolf (especially the competence of the service department). For 95% of my driving, I think I could get by on a home charger. For the rest, I have t...
