Re: Windows 11 shares problem with mac clients

Sounds more like a permission concern on the Windows side.

Can you copy files into the shares, or modify existing ones?

Windows shares were always a pain. Poor visiblity on what's going on (or more like, no visibility).

PS: The Tech Report is dead.

Re: i5-8265U

As for options mentioned in your link, there is no UEFI/BIOS boot mode in the BIOS options. I don't understand. If you can enter the BIOS, mission accomplished. The choice of options available in the BIOS is another question, and I don't think you can do much about it (other than BIOS modding, whic...

Re: i5-8265U

Not sure, but maybe GPT forces EFI booting regardless of the BIOS setting. Do you mean you can't enter the BIOS settings specifically in EFI mode? I think it might be the same also in non-EFI mode. Sounds like an annoying anti-feature (?) that prevents entering the BIOS while booting from hibernatio...

Re: i5-8265U

I didn't necessarily mean CPU benchmarking software. Just anything that does a lot of work and is easy to measure. Simple stuff that's pertinent: WinRAR, 7zip, VeraCrypt have integrated benchmarks in the menus. More complex but still easy enough: Video encoding. I suppose a popular simple GUI tool w...

Re: i5-8265U

If you have them all, just run various benchmarks. Re clock speeds, just check what it runs at in practice. i5-2500 is a desktop part, and with a 95W TDP. So no power or thermal limitations. But it's old, and only 4 threads (which may or may not matter). The 4720HQ is 47W TDP. The 8265U is 15W, and ...

Re: How to replace HDD with an SSD

You can use either.
GPT is newer and is mainly needed for large sizes, and possibly (not sure, in some cases?) if it's a boot drive and you're booting in UEFI mode.

I tend to use MBR as long as GPT isn't required.

Re: How to replace HDD with an SSD

BTW, I wouldn't get the newish WD Blue SSD. They've recently replaced the model (it's now SA510) and the full specs and performance are unknown, with no real reviews. Seems safer to go with known-specced and reviewed models. Either the Crucial MX500 (cheaper, 180 vs 200 TBW in the WD Blue), or Samsu...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

There are simpler alternatives, like: https://openhardwaremonitor.org https://github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor/releases But HWiNFO should show it somewhere in the Sensor Status window, under the motherboard heading: https://listoffreeware.com/wp-content/uploads/hwinfo_fan_speed_m...

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

I missed the message about the result changing with external cooling. Still, odd. I'd think up and down should behave similarly. Also, even with Ookla's inefficient speedtest code, getting bogged down on a rather modern i5-8265U is a bit surprising. Plus, you said it's the same on the other, more ef...

For speed reporting? HWiNFO is a good all-around hardware info tool:

But doesn't sound likely to be the cause.

Different drivers or different firewall?

Check the CPU usage.
Also some testing over LAN would be informative.

Re: Laptop without no onboard ethernet gets asymmetrical speeds through USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter

I don't think the CPU is the problem, though speedtest.net isn't the most efficient. Try also: https://openspeedtest.com https://fast.com https://librespeed.org Does the very same adapter, on the same internet connection, 5 minutes later, work faster on another computer? Also try testing in the LAN....

Re: Laptop suddenly freezes

The fact that it didn't auto-install doesn't mean it's faulty now. And drivers are signed nowadays so not very likely to be corrupt. But it's easy to try to another driver, so no harm in trying. Could you be a bit more specific? What do you mean by "chug along"? You said above that it's no...

Re: Dell is putting me thru hell on a Brand New Workstation

So the mic was resolved, and the problem is the resolution on 2 monitors? Maybe drivers, or graphics card limitations? But if the idea is to get Dell to solve it, I've no real suggestions. Maybe get instead a PC from a local small store or PC tech who'll be more flexible, knowing in advance your req...

Re: Laptop suddenly freezes

I'd let it sit a for a while to see if it resolves itself after a minute or 5. Is the computer fully stuck, or only no response to user input? Does it happen both when connected and disconnected from power? Normally I'd try booting another OS to see if it happens there (Ubuntu from USB), but since i...

Re: Windows Crashes & restarts itself

If the data isn't backed up, now would be a good time. Difficult to say. You'd need to start troubleshooting parts or software. See if the crash messages give some hints, and if they consistently complain about the same thing. Does SMART look okay on all your HDD/SSDs? Software: Try booting Ubuntu f...

Re: Old Intel NAS Issue

Looks hot-running. A NAS box should work just as well as it did back then. It's simply talks SMB I assume, so why does the client OS matter? (Other than new Windows versions would have old versions SMB disabled by default for security reasons.) If you want to try installing an alternative OS on the ...

Re: What is the fastest way to transfer datafrom old to new system ?

It's a stretch, but USB 10Gbps might matter in dual-drive docks, if using SSDs, and assuming the dock can read both SSDs simultaneously. :) There are 10Gbps enclosures and I assume also docks. USB-C not required if SS+ (i.e., one lane x10, not two x5). Or as Microchip puts it : To avoid confusion an...

Re: What is the fastest way to transfer datafrom old to new system ?

Assuming it's not RAID on the old system, there shouldn't be a problem to connect the old drives to the new system, one by one or all at once. But doing it thru USB 3 won't be much slower for HDDs. External enclosures or docks are probably the way to go for 3.5", because they're powered. 3.5&qu...

Not the best forum for these questions, probably. :)

Congrats. Which model?

How is it quieter, different (default?) fan behavior?

But Surprising. Does that mean you have CSM/legacy boot, with integrated graphics, on a B560 chipset + i5-10gen-something (UHD 630)?

The best way would be to directly fix the problem, no? Make shutdown and WoL work properly. That id is the integrated graphics: https://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/8086/3e98 It's part of the CPU, not the motherboard. You can find which graphics "card" is inside each CPU model on Wikipedia or the Intel site: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/199271/intel-core-i510400...
