Re: TR Dead?

Thanks! Back when I was in high school Ars Technica was pretty cool to read and they'd get really into how computers worked, and over time it moved more and more to being a news site. However, they got TechReport to do a system build for them one year, which lead me to this place right when I had th...

Re: TR Dead?

While there are still people on the forums, and they are still up: Is there a good replacement? Tech Report was my guide when I built my current PC, and I'm hoping to build a new one soon without all the mistakes I made with this one, and I'd love to know what the best places to get this type of gra...

Re: Looking for a new LGA1155 motherboard

If you don't want to replace everything just pick up a tested, used 1155 board from fleabay. Z77 boards seem to be crazy expensive but B75 and H77 boards aren't. You'll have more luck finding B75 in mATX format too. If cost is the issue it'll tie you over for a couple more years and be cheaper than...

Re: Looking for a new LGA1155 motherboard

I got this one free from the back of a van, well after better boards were out. I didn't do my research ahead of time so didn't know when to grab when the motherboards were handed out. That exactly matches my problem: The two main drives work fine (SSD and HDD), but my CD drive stopped working, and I...

Re: Looking for a new LGA1155 motherboard

No kidding. I've decided to just buy a portable HDD for now and wait until I have enough cash for a new motherboard and CPU. Unless anyone wants to offer me a good deal on one, or has suggestions on good places to get one.

Re: Looking for a new LGA1155 motherboard

Some details I got from a photo on the Gigabyte website and some measurement: ~249 mm is too small, and ~357 mm is enough. I've been looking, and finding LGA 1155 motherboards is hard; Newegg.ca seems to only have a few left for sane prices. I'm leaning towards cheap, $100-150 range, and man, there ...

Looking for a new LGA1155 motherboard

I've got a Gigabyte PV67A-UD4 (I bet that should say GA-P67A-UD4 with the V being a typo. Opps), I'll that I got for free at the Techreport North dinner ages ago. I've been having trouble with my DVD drive not working, and the used SSD I just got won't work either. Both work in my coworkers tower wh...

Re: Why aren't graphics cards mounted directly on the MB?

Come to think of it, I saw some computers with the CPU on a board when I used to help out in my high school. I think they were PII era machines? But yes, I was mostly interested in socketed GPUs, and I think that has been answered with 'It would be really expensive, and hard to work out the geometri...

You could have a mount point on the outside of the case for it, like a second compartment or mount point.

Re: Why aren't graphics cards mounted directly on the MB?

Because until fairly recently slots were parallel, and parallel connexions are very sensitive to one trace being slightly longer or having slightly higher resistance, which would seriously limit performance for no real gain. Nowadays we could do that with Thunderbolt, since it's more-or-less PCIe a...

Re: Why aren't graphics cards mounted directly on the MB?

Thanks everyone, that makes sense. I was wondering why motherboards haven't absorbed the graphics card like they have pretty much everything else. Way more complexity makes sense. I was just thinking that having it socketed right into the motherboard would be faster then going through a connector, b...

Why aren't graphics cards mounted directly on the MB?

So, I was looking at my computer today and suddenly it hit me: My CPU is sitting there smack in the centre of the motherboard, under its giant cooler. But my graphics card, just as important to gaming, is off to the side on its card, with three fans vs one, but no giant aluminum heat sink or copper ...

Re: Advice on selling mechanical keyboards?

Sadly, I don't have a dishwasher. However, from what I saw, it didn't look that bad, so some scrubbing with isopropyl alcohol and Q-tips or a paper towel should be enough. Now to get around to bringing those keyboards home and seeing if they work.

Re: Advice on selling mechanical keyboards?

I already own a bottle of 70% iPrOH, so I'll probably give that a try. I guess I could steal some 100% from my lab (I've got 4L of it sitting under my fumehood) if that doesn't work. Though, if you are really wanting to kill bacteria iPrOH isn't as good as plain old ethanol in the 50-70% range. That...

Re: Advice on selling mechanical keyboards?

Thanks all. I'll try that, and will trade something to get that model M, I just need to find a cheap PS/2 keyboard first. Sorry about the late reply; it has been a hectic few days. I'll clean them up when I bring them home to test them and make sure all the keys work. Does anyone have a good program...

Advice on selling mechanical keyboards?

So, I found some Fujitsu FKB4725 mechanical keyboards around. Now, I've still got to take them home and test them, but from what I understand there is a market for vintage mechanical keyboards, and there seem to be a few eBay auctions for them. I could use a bit of money, and I'm not a mechanical ke...

Re: Why are modern PSUs put on the floor of the case?

Ah, that is interesting to know. I'm using an older case, so I um, had to cut a hole in the top and mount my PSU upside down to give it a clear output area. The fan doesn't spin up much though, so I don't think it is getting too hot.

Thanks for all the information.

Why are modern PSUs put on the floor of the case?

I thought the whole point of putting a PSU at the top of the case was so the heat would rise out of the case without warming the rest of the case. Why are modern PSUs now placed at the bottom of the case?

Re: Computer Room

Considering how much work it has taken me just to build a computer, install an after-market cooler, and a new fan, you people amaze me. (To be fair, this was done on a case that was very obviously not meant to be modified, and involved cutting a hole in the top of it to let the power supply breath.....

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

IT WORKSSSSSSSSS. I was only able to use 3 of the screws due to the honeycomb pattern in the grill, and I couldn't use the washers, but after a brief bit when booting the new fan isn't even running right now, so the only sound my computer is making is the CPU fan, which sounds annoying, but given th...

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

You might want to put rubber washers on all places where the fan screws touch the case to cut down on noise, too, if you haven't already done that. Thanks for the advice! I'll see if I can score some from the machine shop guys. 1) You do realize that you don't need a sound card to use computer spea...

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

The machine shop guys cut a whole in the top-plexiglass for the power supply fan. Nice. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BfWFAgbCcAA59k7.jpg Now to get some holes punched in the case for some less noisy fans that don't freaking glow. Why would you want glowing fans? I turned on the light in my power supp...

Reboot the modem otherwise it will only accept the last MAC addy you had it plugged into. It's like that all over. o.0 Damn, didn't even think to try that since I knew the modem was fine. I've cloned the Laptops MAC onto the desktop, so it is working now. I'll look into getting a router and undoing...

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

If you keep the side panel off you might not need those two front fans. Or any fans minus your cpu/gpu ones. Yeah, but then I risk putting my foot into the case, and given I swing my legs around a lot....yeah, not a great idea. So, I've got windows installed now, and installed all the driver CDs I ...

The speaker cable also has KSP under the triangle. The rule of thumb with those light and switch headers is that the colored wire is + and th...

Re: Canageek tries to build a computer using a very old case

This thread is still useful even though it's not "super-duper old case" because it shows us how far case design really has come in the last 10-15 years. No kidding. Now, I don't know if this was a good case back then, but I don't think it was a bad one, given that it has a fan on the side...
