Re: I want to buy a new laptop, but I want Windows 7

Any x86 machine that runs Windows 8 will run Windows 7 without issue. The "made for Windows X" stuff is just marketing fluff. I'm sorry, but that is not true. Windows 7 will install on any laptop that supports Windows 8 or 8.1, yes, however there's no guarantee you'll have drivers availab...

Well, here we go! Re: Monitor with least eye strain for users with migraine

I'm not much of an expert here, nor am I prone to migraine headaches. However, as of this posting, I have been staring at my Asus VG248QE all day with no issues. I've been doing desktop work and gaming on this for a few weeks now, and I've never even felt the smallest amount of eye strain looking at...

Re: last stable Nvidia 4xx driver

I know your pain, man. Try 314.22, it's the last stable driver for most people by the looks of it. All of the ones since have been fairly unstable on a varying variety of machines.

I have a GTX 680 myself and the newest drivers are a wreck of odd visual sputtering and driver resets.

Re: TR Diary Contest

My first draft was over 400 when I pasted it into MS Word and I almost cried. I had to really sweat it to chop out a lot and I still came out at like 347. There were some that were still well over the limit. Some of the best entries were too long according to Word. The challenge was twofold: be cre...

Re: TR Diary Contest

To be fair there were a lot of entries, and not many of them looked like they kept it well under 350 words. Maybe they're still just going through them.

Re: hes not dead yet Jim

I'm just wondering, but you do realize that non K or X series processors can't be overclocked right? They have locked multipliers, and base-clock based overclocking is locked down as well by design. I ask because all these enthusiast boards you keep linking are designed primarily with overclocking ...

Re: hes not dead yet Jim

Yet another thing to consider here is that Intel's socket 1150 K series CPUs don't have Intel's best virtualization technologies, which can help out a lot depending on what you're doing. For processors that support that tech, look at this list for socket 1150 ..... Ahh so the i7-4771 brings in Inte...

Re: How to change HDD/SSD on Playstation 4

Which current generation SSDs have firmware garbage collection? Seems those would be most ideal. Last I checked almost all of them had at least that with only a few exceptions, but that was several months back. Still, I can't help but think that the problem with a console like this is more the size...

Re: hes not dead yet Jim

You can extend the life of that 1366 system a fair bit with a cheap 32nm Gulftown, 6 more advanced cores at the same or better clockspeed, it even idles better than the original cpus in my experience. A lot of people are unloading them now, and don't ignore the xeons as many of them are just as ove...

Re: New Build tough Mobo choices

Not to be "that guy" but let's just get some basic things out of the way first. One, how do you intend to use this machine? As a CPU the i7 920 isn't quite a slouch, even by today's standards. Sure the i7 4770k is ~60% faster stock for stock, but overclocking can close that gap significant...

Re: Enter TR's Dear Diary contest here

Dear Diary, This is the story of computer number 427. Computer 427 was purchased from a random chain store, in a bulk package including 749 others. Computer 427 was never quite sure of the details of this undeniably shady transaction, but he was almost completely certain of one single fact regarding...
