Re: Anonymous Gerbil Slack

Really surprised no one made a gerbil discord of if they have it's not featured anywhere prominently that I noticed. I started using TR when I was like 17 or 18, and I'm almost 40 with a wife and two kids. From early PHBB -> Discord? Whew lads.

Uhh... so a bot giving years-out-of-date answers to technical questions? What would be the point of that? AI bots learn and evolve. They would learn from TR forums how issues were solved and pick up troubleshooting skills as well as how to point people to good sources of information. Wouldn't you f...

As an old saying has it, there are two types of people when the power goes out: those who curse the darkness, and those who light candles. Can't light candles when forum posts aren't shown on the front page, and every new 'article' (read: Clickbaity, trash op-eds with no soul that exist solely to l...

Re: TR Redesign: bugs - features - tips

Still no love for older browsers. Do we really need the highest level of man-in-the-middle security for news, reviews, and comments content? In my opinion it only serves to make the site less responsive. Due to cross site scripting I'd say yes we do. Being a nuts and bolts and solder hardware guy I...

Re: Ryze 3000 series and MSI b450 issues

The the root cause of the problem was a beta BIOS that they pulled? Going back to the latest "stable" v18 fixed it? The fact that you have to attempt a BIOS flash multiple times for it to "stick" is definitely terrible, though. I never even used the beta bios, many folks did tho...

Ryze 3000 series and MSI b450 issues

Hi all, I recently purchase a 3700x as the drop-in replacement for the temporary 2200g I've been rocking the last few months. MSI billed their b450 Tomahawk as Ryzen 3000 series ready, and I have to say I disagree strongly with that marketing. I was able to ultimately get everything going last night...

I tried to get a 3900x basically everywhere yesterday, hoping I could convince a sap at a retail store to sell me one (they didn't know what I was talking about lol). The 3900x is a day-1 buy for me. Shout out to our own builders-anonymous forum for suggesting I get a crappy 2200g and wait for for Ryzen2. Very excited that I did, and the payoff looks to be legit. Almost 70MB of L3 cache? Lets gooooooooo!

Well I managed to slog through the options in the bios to find that I can manually set my RAM timings and frequency, which I happily did and am now getting the 3000 that I paid for. Sadly, I cannot overclock because the multiplier is locked, but no matter, this chip will soon be replaced I hope. Now...

Re: New build - who dis?

Oh, one thing just occurred to me: you should probably get a new PSU. First, those pops you are hearing could be coming from the PSU. And even if they aren't, the old PSU is getting old, and it probably isn't as good at delivering clean power as it was when it was new. Either that PSU is dying, or ...

Re: New build - who dis?

Update: So the MSI B450 Tomahawk says this about its latest BIOS update: "Support new upcoming AMD cpu." So you should be good. My suggestion, then, is that instead of getting a Ryzen 7 2700X, you get a Ryzen 3 2200G for $200 less and wait for Ryzen 3xxx to come out. And then, with that R...

Doubtful if only because I'm never one to be a day-1 adopter of the bleeding edge, but more importantly the pops I hard could be total system failure any day. Might also last years, who can say.

Re: New build - who dis?

I'm not saying a 2700X is a bad pick at all, but in TR's most recent CPU review that includes gaming + streaming, the Intel CPUs still kinda rule the roost. Even an 8700K beat the 2700X (not to mention the 9900K/9700K). https://techreport.com/review/34192/intel-core-i9-9900k-cpu-reviewed/13 As for ...
