Re: Gun prOn!

I've never used the 3 round burst except when we were burning off ammo that needed to be fired before departing the range.. I've never seen it legitimately used in training. I have heard that it was intended for use when firing from a moving platform and I can see that being true but I have nothing ...

Re: Baby

In my case violence is sort of accurate; mother Army is sending me off to Afghanistan for a while. Not exactly tons of money but it's about a 18k$/year effective pay raise while I'm there. Coupled with reduced expenses on the whole it will certainly help a good bit. First car ride (home) on Tuesday ...

Turns out it doesn't take a degree in rocket science to figure it out - who knew? Fortunately the wife and kid will be headed to VA in a few weeks to spend the better part of a year. He can absorb some of the wisdom that the commonwealth has to offer.

Re: Job hunting

I've been living in TX for about the last 18 months. It is nice not having state income tax but they get you back in other ways. Sales tax is a bit higher and property taxes are fairly substantial. I haven't looked into the tax code at all but I'm guessing that it's all cause-effect based as a resul...

Re: Job hunting

I guess I am referring to the countries that I am familiar with - Ireland/Germany/France. Should have been more specific. Just seems like the working (professionals included) young people there have a much lower standard of living in many ways. An example being when I was in Germany for work over th...

Not to derail things too much - the euro zone is very interesting. Salaries are not that much higher on average than the US while cost of living is astronomical. Gas, taxes, rent, food.. the culture is very different. Young people have different priorities and give up some luxuries that we (American...

Don't usually have that kind of cash lying around, just sold a car to an old guy who paid in hundreds.

Good little pistol, I need to buy a holster for it. It would make a much nicer carry pistol compared to my subcompact glock. That thing is too fat. Doesn't like hollow points though.

Here's my Walther PPKS made some time in the 1980s. It's pretty much brand new, to my knowledge its only had a few rounds fired through it. Nice little pistol though.

Seemed like a fitting background given that it's the James Bond gun. :D

Re: Gun prOn!

On the note of weighing ammo, and I'm sure Vrock knows plenty about this, we use this to our advantage in the military. Oftentimes there are unrealistic percentages(based on the type of training) required back in expended brass by the Ammo Supply Point; they weigh the brass to determine how much is ...

Re: Strong computer for games - please review my config

Don't have time to read the full thread so this may have already been suggested: Consider buying a single high end GPU now that will support all four monitors and run current games well. In a couple of years upgrade the GPU while leaving the rest of the system untouched. This should allow you to get...

A bit late to this thread, this is in reply to the OP: I'm sure you already checked walmart but they really are the best place to go for ammo(unless you're picky). Their per round prices usually come near to or beat bulk online purchases. The caveat is that they've only got common calibers and no mi...

The previous replies look to be on point. If I were in your shoes I'd eat a second 'lunch' between midday and working out, something with complex carbohydrates within a couple of hours of your workout. If you're able to work out cardio on a less than empty stomach without getting queasy, you may wan...

Re: haha, ebay is now charging sellers 9% in fees?

For items related to firearms/hunting and military surplus there is gunbroker. There are a lot of military history items being on there sold as well. The fees are reasonable and sellers don't usually absorb the costs associated with money transfer.

We had plenty of break ins when I was living in the city over the past couple of years. The roommates didn't buy renter's insurance so of course they were the ones to lose stuff. Re: low profile heat sink for 1156 mini-itx board.

Intel processors of the C2D vintage have enjoyed a lot of undervolting 'headroom'. I wouldn't be surprised if the newer ones are similar. If in your drive to keep the fan speeds down you think the processor is pumping out too much heat consider tweaking the voltage a bit.

Don't Surefires just use CR123As? Yeah, but they'll burn through them pretty quickly. I think my basic surefire incandescent goes through 2 per hour of constant use. Seeing as it's a weapon light with a touch strip that's not a big deal but I'd imagine one used as a normal flashlight would get expe...

Surefire flashlights really are great. They're what the military uses. Their higher output compact flashlights will temporary blind someone on the other end whose eyes were used to the dark. Additionally they're very reliable and durable. The LED surefires allow for much greater battery life based o...

1.5 years ago when I got my used car inspected by a dealership prior to purchase they said that the rotors needed machined because of vibration felt in the pedal. They wanted $1200 to do this. I'm no raid guru but I think that a raid 1 setup would be better for you than manually copying the data from disk to disk if they're going to be hooked up 24/7 anyways. There's something to be said for having an off site backup instead of/in addition to only a raid 'backup' but it all depends on how...

Forgive me for not looking up the components of your build and their respective TDPs but I'm going to assume that they fall in line roughly with the TR test system. In the TR review the 5770 system drew 221 watts from the wall under their load tests. You could probably stress the system more than th...

It depends on the firearm, when I clean my Glock I don't take it apart. When I clean my AR-15 I take bolt carrier apart etc. which could be considered a 'detail strip'. I suppose you could get even more in depth so it would depend on your definition of the term. You could go on to take off the hand ...

This card is "NVIDIA's 5830" - it's their 3rd fastest GPU, priced higher than the 5830 because it does more. Seems reasonable to me. While this is a true statement, it does not discount what you and I know krogoth was actually saying. Even from a biased perspective it should be clear that...
