Re: Starfalcon's Great Hardware Inventory

If you need help identifying anything, let me know. Same if you are interested in parting with anything. I may be interested in anything I don't have in my collection.

Re: Post your invention for the TR Napkin Sketch Contest thread

Probably not what you're expecting, but I thought: Why not give the whiner's the best of both worlds!? A blazing fast high-end graphics card, powered by both nVidia's GP102 and AMD's Polaris 11 architecture. nVidia fanboys can finally use Freesync monitors (and enjoy any games that support TressFX.....

Re: AMD Website is so..

Can't say I like it one bit, but that's not the worst part of their site. AMD's website is broken... for example, choose an earlier Catalyst driver. I chose one for Vista 64-bit - Catalyst 13.12. Then hit the release notes - it's for Catalyst 14.4. Yay... now I have all the wrong information. AMD ha...

Re: Personal game collection database?

I prefer to use a spreadsheet or google doc, but one of the better sites is http://vgcollect.com/

You do have to create an account and use it online, but it might be what you are looking for.

They have options for choosing PC, MAC, Gog, etc.

Re: Ubiquiti experiences?

I have used some Ubiquiti, and I have a friend that uses Ubiquiti as well. I only have experience with their WAPs and WiFi Bridges. I don't bother with their routers or switches, but that's because I'm quite fond of Cisco when it comes to those (their enterprise solutions, not their Small Business o...

Re: Longest work shift

My longest work shift was 18 hours (I also worked in the software industry). 12-16 hour days were the most common; 7 days a week. There was quite a few months in a row, where I got 1 Sunday a month off. Aside from maybe 1 or 2 weeks, I don't think I ever worked less than 80 hours a week. I worked th...

Re: What is the oldest computer you will still work on?

As far as working on other peoples' computers, I really don't care how old it is. I've had customers with Pentium III computers that needed repairs - and a few even older (including an original Pentium laptop, and a 486). Where did you find the parts? And legal copies of Windows 9x and/or MS-DOS? H...

Re: Which solder iron to get and wick etc

What is your budget? One of my favourite soldering stations is Metcal's MX-500 series, but it certainly isn't the cheapest.

If you are on a budget don't get the latest greatest model - used ones are also good, and still make soldering a breeze!

Re: SSD Upgrade VS GPU Upgrade

An SSD probably won't make much difference in a lot of games, but it will make EVERYTHING you do with your computer so much more enjoyable. The first computer I built with an SSD, I used Intel's X25-M 80GB (G1) - 6 years later and it was still about as fast as the day I built it. The SanDisk Ultra I...

Re: best USB speakers

IMO, the best way to go would be an external DAC with standard optical/coax SPDIF inputs, which would allow it to work with whatever sound solution you might be using at the time. An external DAC with SPDIF inputs...... which one would you recommend? Take a look at the Modi 2 Uber: http://schiit.co...

Re: Warning! Disasterous Windows Update.

I got something similar on a Linux box recently. Keyboard and mouse don't work once the system loads the OS... at least not initially. If I wait 2-5 minutes the keyboard and mouse start working. I also noticed that if I unplug and re-plug in a device (e.g. mouse), it lights up very briefly, but doe...

Is 'Intel Trusted Execution Technology' disabled in the BIOS? If not, try disabling it and seeing if that makes a difference.

Re: What do you do with games you already completed?

I'm a collector, so I always keep it. I don't usually replay them, but it depends on the game. To this day, every year I'm pulling out the original Sid Meier's Civilization... I just like it more than any other Civ game. I eventually do go back to quite a few games I loved. Despite that story-based ...

Re: Building new pc - personal office

I would recommend a larger SSD (unless you know you won't fill a 120GB), and going for a single 8GB DIMM to leave room for upgrades in the future. If you are on a budget, you can save money on the CPU and motherboard. For these types of builds I've been using $50 Celeron processors. They are plenty ...

Re: People who don't get it. (A Rant)

Americans have become immature, and refuse to take responsibility for themselves. Simple as that. You just look at some of the lawsuits that get won to know that. That said I have 2 semi-related rants: 1.)I have had nothing but problems since I got phones with ATT last year. First they said I could ...

Re: System for torrent, downloads?

If you can wait a couple weeks, what about MSI's new J18001? Looks to be about $60 for the 2.4GHz dual-core version on a mITX form factor motherboard. Leaves a lot of cash for case, power supply, and hard drives.

Re: New Gaming Rig Suggestions

(i)I think a Quad-Core CPU will be just fine. I think it will take several years before 6 and 8-core CPUs become more mainstream, so I wouldn't expect most games to take advantage of it. Games that utilize more cores will still more likely benefit from a faster graphics card, than those extra cores....

I'll just leave this here: http://jay-machalani.squarespace.com/blog/2013/12/12/fixing-windows-8 They'll never fix Windows as far as I'm concerned (that would require giving the user a lot more power and ceasing from trying to obfuscate everything in the UI), but the above concept would get me to pu...

Dear Diary, Today it happened again! She re-appeared on the network, and it looks like she's been assigned to my workgroup!
