Re: Hard Drive Problems?

Well, so far so good. The only thing I notice so far about the power supplies is that the 500W one, the one that used to be in my SageTV server, has slightly low +5v and +3.3V readings. They're reading 4.93V and 3.28V respectively. +12V is reading a little higher at 12.16V. Not sure what the toleran...

Re: Hard Drive Problems?

Ok, power supplies are switched around. Hopefully that did it. The brand new Seasonic I just bought is a 520W unit while the older one from my server is a 500W unit. Server has 5 drives and not much else.

Re: Hard Drive Problems?

No, I haven't tried another connector and I don't really have another power supply to try out. I just bought a new one for my other system. I suppose I could swap the two out and see if the problem goes away. I forgot to mention that on occasion I get a "Could not boot" error when I attemp...

Hard Drive Problems?

I'm really not sure what's going on here. I have my SageTV server that will periodically Windows XP get a 0x77 stop error with a parameter that indicated that the device was no longer present. I thought I started noticing this error when I switched my drives to AHCI mode. So I recently switched them...

Re: This Mac thing ain't so bad

Still, the plague of bad mobo caps (that I fell victim to) in the early 2000's in the PC world, that didn't carry over to the mac side of things. Less hardware churn in apple land but I wonder if part of that is due to the lack of emphasis on gaming to drive hardware refreshes. That's not quite tru...

Re: Old SCSI Compaq AIT 50 tape backup drive

How about an eSATA external drive ? Even 2 TB models aren't too outrageously expensive. I've heard that hard drives are bad for long term backups? I guess it's just something people have told me, and also since business still use tape it was another indicator it's still better? Tapes aren't horribl...

Re: HDTV Tuner Decoding of Digital Cable Channels

Don't expect to get those digital channels in the clear forever. Since Comcast was able to get an exception from the FCC to use decrypt capable DTA's (i.e. cable boxes without a CableCard) they'll eventually be encrypting everything. It's already happened in several markets. Be glad that you get wha...

Re: Cox vs. the Streaming Services

That's interesting for those in Cox Cable land. I'm certain that all TV viewing is eventually going to be on-demand. It's just a matter of time. Could be long and drawn out. Especially here in the US where most people don't have the technology or the interest to view on-demand.

Okay, so you're saying we've all succombed to keeping a dot "happy" so we can continue to fulfill our "warranty coverage" terms on our overly priced portable audio/video devices? Hmm... Is this planet Earth? Or am I lost? I think I'd rather USE my device than handle it like a dr...

You can't deny that getting water in the device could stop wifi and bluetooth from working, however. Thats really hairy and you can't fault them for voiding a warranty on a device that has had water damage. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2044754&start=1620&tstart=0 See th...

Re: Apple Store Customer Support is A++

You're always going to find people on both sides. People that have had great service and people that have had terrible service. Makes one wonder what metrics determine how good or bad of service people get? I bet a lot of it has to do with the customer's attitude. For the most part I've generally re...

Re: So, I'm in the market for a new gigabit card

Just to echo the comments. I can vouch for the quality of Intel NIC's. I've used strictly Intel gigabit NIC's for the last few years and two of my systems have Intel motherboards which both have Intel PHY's. Intel NIC's are by far the highest quality and highest performing out there. I'll also say i...

Re: Motherboards half Solid State Caps/Half Not

Ironically the capacitor plague just bit me in the butt last night. My server started rebooting itself. Opened it up and found a wonderful row of bulging capacitors around the CPU. This is not even that old of a board. I bought it about 2 years ago. It's an MSI LGA775 board. It's being replaced by a...

Re: Motherboards half Solid State Caps/Half Not

Actually, they're both solid state. The difference is the type of dielectric used. Electrolytic versus whatever is used in the "longer life" capacitors. Depending on where the capacitors are used in the circuit there might not be a particular need for them to be of the higher quality varie...

Re: Is HP correct re: this RAM statement?

The better question would be why HP is selling a system with an OS that is insufficient to fully take advantage of the hardware? The cost difference between Home Premium and Pro for them is negligible compared to the rest of the system. They must figure that the added support cost for people needing...

I had this problem when I originally installed Windows 7. For me it turned out to be a driver problem with the September Catalyst drivers for my Radeon 3870. Stepping down to the August Cats fixed that problem. I'm now running the latest Cats without issue.

We are a subsidiary of a larger corporation but due to our Sys Admin we tend to make our own network policy. It's not really my decision. At this point I'm just going to leave it. Our sister company next door who is connected to our network is who is complaining. We also have one of the CNC punch machines but the operators haven't complained about it in a while. Probably learned to deal with it. Certainly ...

Well, my boss isn't at all interested in subnetting the CNC machines. As long as they're on the network they are to have AV even if it slows them down. Granted, I don't know everything but is he being overly cautious with this? I understand an unprotected machine can be an easy vector for infection ...

I can see your points. And I believe part of the issue is also how the network is setup with just a single subnet. I'm sure if we had things setup another way we could isolate the CNC machines on their own subnet and still maintain access to the files that the operators need. Unfortunately, being he...

Re: AMADA Is Stupid

For the price that was paid for this equipment I seriously doubt a better controller computer would have made that much of a dent in the final pricetag. Amada is also a Japanese company. Most definitely designed under a different philosophy than it possibly would have been here in the states.

I just need to blow off some steam and see if anyone else has had any better experience with them. Anyone deal with AMADA CNC equipment?
