If we can get the information density fixed - a “compact” or “dense” mode or something, that would be a huge help. The old theme colors back would be be at least less generic and less eye-searing too, not to mention the lower APL would be easier on batteries on mobile devices. As far as forum back-e...

Re: Cable suggestions

In-wall cabling is usually solid, not stranded. Given the choice I would use copper, not CCA (copper clad aluminum), although that’s my preference. For 10G you will need Cat 6A, however this is significantly more difficult to properly terminate than Cat 6 or Cat 5e. Given the choice I would run cond...

Per the spec page, satellite size is: Height x Width x Depth: 7.6 in (192.8 mm) x 4.3 in (108 mm) x 3.5 in (90 mm)... To try and match that desk footprint even something like an Audioengine A2+ (6.00 x 4.00 x 5.30" (15.20 x 10.16 x 13.50 cm) per B&H spec page) is about all that comes to min...

If it's an older model Onkyo with the known HDMI board failures, maybe. Otherwise, no.

Re: NETGEAR and the R6700 Nighthawk - Buyer beware

I don't recall any bloat like you describe the last time I setup an R6700-- granted this was many years ago. If you can't return it, can you reflash it to Kong DD-WRT or something similar? The R7800 and several other Netgear products have been excellent and no bloat like you're describing, but then ...

Re: APC SMX UPS sound levels - 1500RM2U vs 2000LV

I've got an older Smart-UPS 1500 2U in an office and it's completely silent under normal conditions. Only when actively using the battery does the fan spin up.

Can't speak for the larger units.

Yar, beats me too-- mainstream tent makers all seem reluctant to embrace silnylon or Dyneema. Boutique makers such as ZPacks, Big Sky, etc. have been much more open to it, tho. Fortunately with Massdrop, Kickstarter, whatever, a lot more boutique options are available these days.

Might be thermal recalibration or something else, as stated. It's not only a 7200rpm disk but a nearline (enterprise) one, so it's not going to be tuned to be particularly quiet.

if you really can't stand the noise, pick up a Seagate Desktop 8TB?

Spyder5's go on sale pretty often, they might be the best deal around. ColorMunki Smile is the baseline, budget one that's usually recommended. If you have the budget to go marginally higher-end, i1 Display Pro is generally regarded as the way to go, but I believe the Spyder5 is pretty close in perf...

I'm also curious (and in agreement) that HVEC/x.265's lead is too significant for AV1 to make grounds on, especially if performance is only marginally better. The AV1 guys have also said that AV2 is in the works for a few years down the road, I wonder if they'll aim to do AV2 sooner rather than late...

Re: I7 8700 reaching 100C

As others have said, 1.4v does sound high for stock 4.3ghz at 6C/12T... obviously it depends on the chip, but Tom's Hardware above found their example could do 1.28v... and yes, Prime95 in current builds does use AVX.

Tried a long DST from the Toshiba utilities? That'll probably tell you it's got slow/failing blocks somewhere. But then the slow format is probably bad blocks.

Time to toss the drive. If it's under warranty, RMA it.

For active noise cancellation, Bose does seem to be best. QC35's or whatnot if you can afford the cost and bulk. I think Sony and Audio-Technica are competitors, Sony's MDR1000X/B I believe is close, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b is a lot cheaper but not as good-- that said I know people with thousan...
