Re: 6/6 core can't handle "Very Slow" Preset & a Capture

What bitrate are you targeting? That is going to make a big difference as to whether the very slow setting is going to make a difference in visual quality.

Re: Program to test/define "video quality"?

When I worked in video conferencing we would use various measures to define video quality. You could use a metric such as PSNR , or MSE . But often the goal is to improve or maintain quality while also reducing bandwidth. In which case you would probably want to use a metric such as the Bjontegaard ...

Well it's all up and running, and with a stable (as of about 3 hours of Prime95 testing) overclock to 4.5Ghz.

I cannot quite comprehend just how quickly this thing can boot now.

Re: Upgrading a 2007 Build

So in the end I went with the 3570K, 16 Gb (2x8Gb) of Corsair Low Profile CL9 1600MHz, the Asus P8Z77-V, a Samsung 250GB 840 Series SSD, and a Coolermaster Hyper 212.

They should arrive tomorrow, I will report back how the build goes!

This isn't to do with the machines not being cleaned. This is to do with unscrupulous suppliers across the EU labelling horsemeat as beef in order to turn a quick profit.

I'd be inclined to overclock if I got the unlocked CPU, so what would be my best bet for CPU cooler? I'd prefer to stick to just air, and noise isn't much of a concern.

Upgrading a 2007 Build

So I think it's finally time I take the plunge and replace the motherboard and processor combo that I've had since 2007. The core of the system is a socket 775 Kentsfield Core 2 Quad Q6600 sitting in an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard. Now since the initial build I've upgraded from 2Gb to 4Gb of ram, and ...

Just open notepad as an administrator. Right click on notepad and select "Run as Administrator", then you will be able to open and edit your file.

Re: Upgrade options from a 8800 GTS

Just a quick update for the kind folks who helped me out. My replacement bios arrived and has been installed succesfully along with my HD 6950. I am currently just testing a gentle overclock to around 2.8Ghz. If this looks okay I will gradually nudge higher until I get scared! Thanks again for all t...

Re: Upgrade options from a 8800 GTS

Yep. The bios I have has a bootblock recovery feature, and can be used to reflash the bios if you have a working floppy drive. Unfortunately I haven't had a floppy drive since around '07. I figured it would be easier and quicker to use a bios replacement service than to go and buy a floppy drive and...

Re: Upgrade options from a 8800 GTS

The bios EEPROM is dead. But I have ordered a replacement, so if that works I plan to keep the motherboard, CPU and RAM for a bit longer. If that doesn't fix it, then I guess I will have to bite the bullet and upgrade to Sandy Bridge... (ah well :P).

Well I ordered a 2Gb 6950. I tried to play around with overclocking today, and got it into my head to try and update the motherboard BIOS (not sure why I thought I needed that), and managed to fry it. Am now also waiting on a replacement BIOS. Oh well.

I'm at work so can't go poking around inside the case. I seem to recall I have a fairly decent 750W Antec power supply, and I think I may even have a CoolerMaster cpu cooler. But I will double check those components when I get the chance!

Thanks for the quick reply. I have no particular loyalty to any manufacturer. I'll buy the best bang for my buck at any given time. Upgrade options from a 8800 GTS

Dear Gerbils, I would like to upgrade my GPU in the following system. I use this PC for gaming, mainly RPG's (Dragon Age 1/2, Witcher, Oblivion) and FPS (Borderlands, Portal 2, Half Life 2 series) etc. It has so far handled most things I have thrown at it, but it is starting to get a bit long in the...

Interesting. I never said, nor implied, that closed source could not have such a flaw. Albeit with closed source software the scope of such a flaw would be more egregious as that would mean the private company was complicit in the implementation of said back door. How is paying off a private (or pu...

Re: password salting

One MD5s biggest problems is the fact that two completely different passwords can potentially generate the same exact hash. To account for this, you salt the password with some other fields further lessening the likelihood. Some salts can be a combination of fields for the same user such as the Id ...

BTW my suggestion was NOT to store the salt in the database, but rather to calculate the salt using an algorithm. This would force the hacker to try every possible salt. But you can't assume your algorithm is going to be secure. If they have access to your database, then they may well have access t...
