Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

I'm updating a Core2 machine that's actually used for real stuff (not high-performance work but real work) once the updated 4.9 LTS kernel finishes testing in my distro. I'm sure I could show an issue with a synthetic benchmark but I'll see how the box performs for its day job after the update. As ...

Which is why I setup the firewall on my dad's computer last time I was over there. And make sure mine is turn on. Please stop making up stuff as you go just to get attention. Re: Is Linux getting easier to use then Windows?

I think from seeing you two recent posts, that you seem like a really insecure person who tries to gain self worth by your choice of technology platforms. Chill out man. I'm glad someone else wrote it so I wouldn't have to. It's not Windows, Windows users or Linux that scare off potential Linux use...

Re: Home Printers

Don't buy inkjet printers, just don't. My experience with printers and cartridges comes from three years of repairing and servicing all printer brands, and the only exception where inkjet printers are preferable, is for customers who require high-quality photo printing on special paper. I've tried t...

Re: Using standard DIMM in printer

Thanks for trying to find one. That one in particular is only 512 mb. The same webstore does have the 1 gb SODIMM, which they charge $375 for. Albeit it's signifantly less than other suppliers I've found, I can still buy a brand new laser colour printer with 1 gb of memory for that kind of money. H...

Re: Using standard DIMM in printer

The diagram says 64M x 16bit, so I googled both 16 bit and 32 bit DDR3 SODIMM's trying to find a picture of one with half the number of resistors. No luck. Other printer-specific SODIMM's for Lexmark and Dell that showed up, look like regular ones. It seems to be a unique Samsung thingy, can't even ...

Thanks guys. I checked the Service manual, but it barely mentions the memory configuration. It is integrated engine controller, video controller, scan co...

Re: Using standard DIMM in printer

Wouldn't a different voltage fry just the SODIMM? I figure the worst case scenario, a bricked printer, happens, I can buy a brand new Canon or HP colour laser printer with twice the memory, for less money than I'd pay for a Samsung ML-MEM380 SODIMM. For now, I'll settle for taking deep breaths in a ...

I have never seen a DDR3 SO-DIMM with only one BGA chip on it before.  Does the original work in a laptop? If I could, I would. Unfortunately, the Macbook Air I have has its RAM soldered onto the motherboard. The original chip is marked DDR3_CHORUS3_NEXT_ONLY. Chorus3 Next being the CPU of the prin...

On another note, what do you guys think of Coreboot? A piece of software unusable on modern hardware.Unless you're RMS or one of his mad hatters in  his tinfoil hat brigade, there's no reason for you to bother with it. Yet Chromebooks use it. Using standard DIMM in printer

I use a Samsung CLX-6260ND printer at home, quite heavily. When printing some large PS or PDF images, I get an out of memory error and have to spend time reducing the size of the file before printing. I'm looking into expanding the memory to 1 GB. But the cost of the branded memory upgrade, ML-MEM38...

I chose to use btrfs on my current system, and came to regret it over using ext4 or xfs.

Here's one heck of a big reason to stay off btrfs when it comes to raid5 or 6: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Btrfs-RAID-56-Is-Bad

I'm still using a C2D Quad Q9550 oc'd to 3.6 GHz as my primary system. After upgrading it with a GF GTX 770 and an SSD two years ago, I can run most modern games smoothly using medium to full gfx settings.

Manjaro. Least issues and those I've had were fixable.

With Mint, Ubuntu, Debian I suffered a far worse dll-hell equaivalent with ppa's and repositories than Windows ever gave me.

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

Drat, and here I was just thinking I found the perfect distro... There is no "perfect" distro. All of them are tradeoffs in one way or another; all you can really do is engage in a little optimization to find the distro whose shortcomings are least annoying to you, given your specific use...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

True, I was just commenting on an aside in your post. Myself, I like having my packages as small as possible, so I jiust added --threads:0 (auto threading) to my xz options in makepkg.conf, and it's pretty fast now, too. I have used null compression (bare tar) on my rpi2, though. Just throwing out ...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

That doesn't mean what you think it means. Makepkg has 'cat' as a valid compressor for that stage. So what's the step in where the package is compressed before it's archived in /var/cache/pacman/pkg when installing it? Not that it matters. My point was that changing the default compressor in /etc/m...

Downloads source files from servers 3. Checks the integrity of source files 4. Unpacks source files 5. Does any necessary pa...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

It's because the default compression setting used when installing packages is LZMA, which is overkill IMHO as the compression is very slow. It's a trade off. Lower bandwidth usage, lower disk use, and faster downloads on the server side versus longer install times and more CPU usage on the client s...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

Well most other distros use prebuilt packages like rpm, deb, etc. That's why they are faster at installing software. Sometimes true, but far from always. :) As the post below your says, Gentoo compiles and builds everything from the ground up. The kernel, drivers, packages etc, everything. Generall...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

So far the only complaint I have is that the building and installing software is a bit slow. It's because the default compression setting used when installing packages is LZMA, which is overkill IMHO as the compression is very slow. You can change this in /etc/makepkg.conf by altering PKGEXT= and S...

On the other hand, it doesn't seem to run deb/rpm files like anything else, so I had to hop into the terminal to install Chrome. Really? Correct, it uses the Arch repository system. Depending on the flavour you run (Gnome/KDE/XFCE/etc), the name of the graphical installation app differs. You should...

Re: Who is using Manjaro Linux?

So the folks that have been using Manjaro, from a brief reading around the Web I'm getting the thought that Manjaro is more stable than Arch, do you find this to be true? As I understand (caveat warning that I could be wrong), Manjaro "lags" a few weeks after the Arch releases, giving som...
