Re: What are you drinking RIGHT NOW?

Ryan's (Bailey's Knockoff that's cheaper and larger) with my coffee while teleworking.

Now later in evening: Kroger's brand Concorde grape and a splash (tablespoon'ish) of grape vodka and Cruzan 151.

Nummy. Still miss Bacardi's version of 151.

Not today, but last week had the pleasure of *finally* getting fans that I ordered; from China and then 'egg and wallah, the 'egg's arrived 3 days before the China ones did. Even after ording 1.5 weeks later. urf. Anywho: Radeon 6850. Breakdown the whole card to get to fans. Busted one mount because...

Re: Windows shuts down when "idle"

Most likely a driver issue. I say this as a Win7 user with a dual boot drive with Win10 base of the upgrade image. Win7 is flawless and will wake/sleep until the cows come home. Win10 upgrade from the 7 image will *always* result in a check disk if it wakes properly, if at all. A self compiled progr...

Re: What is the temp needed for the second fan on Old-ish Gigabyte Radeon 6850 to spin

Just a SWAG, but I'd imagine that one is the primary for PWM info and the 2nd/3rd drawing power balance out for an overall power load/draw. Similar issue with a 6850 where one fan spins and the other not at all (seized up, no way to add oil). Replacing both because despite dust levels if you try to ...

After my one in depth experience, no, just no. Thank GOD win + E still gets me into win explorer so I could copy a bunch of stuff for a friend's daughter (kid pix, etc) that was getting a divorce. W8 leaves little, to nothing after 25 years of UI experience. If I want a Mac tablet UI, I'll use an iO...

Re: How does one repair a fan?

I've done a 3850 and a 4850 so far and it is easy, if a bit time consuming. Just take the thing apart, keep track of the screws and get to the fan. With the fan out, there is usually a sticker that covers the bearing which I'll peel back 1/2 way and with 90wt oil, use a twist tie and place 2 drops o...

Why are you concerned about CPU? You can buy a sufficient CPU nowdays for a couple of hundred $. Good question: I'm doing a report for a class on the state of the art in grfx hardware with a focus on the 6990 and the CPU requirements needed to feed the cards (as the [H] link points out). Good to know, just wondered what the absolute floor of this beast was for a write up I'm doing.

Would a dual core E8500 fit the bill? Sink down to a pentiumD? Where's the drop-off that it "isn't worth it" is what I'm

As someone who took both routes, upgrade if possible to newer H/W, else stick with upgrading what you got as best you can. One YMMV, tho: Investigate both concurrently. In my case, got a Sapphire 3850 for A64 3700, and things were great for a few weeks, then STALKER hitched, crashed (more than norma...

Re: New to system building. Do it myself or hire someone?

PSU calculators are notorious for being a bit, uh, overzealous... True, yes. But it is better to air on the side of caution because if the PSU struggles its heat output increases and it is nice to have the PSU as a part of the fan system rather than being useless. Plus, headroom for upgrades is a c...
