Re: More Tech Fake News (Vega is NOT in Intel)

I can't believe that this rumour is still going. It just fundamentally doesn't make sense. Why would AMD start putting their graphics in Intel parts now , when they finally have a competitive CPU architecture again? They would ruin Raven Ridge's major advantage, and handing a bunch of sales to Intel...

For old Source engine games, I'm sure the 1030 will do great, and will make your PC a lot quieter at the same time (so long as you get a passive card).

Medieval II Total War is a stone cold classic, and it's currently discounted. I'd highly recommend it! I've played a ton of it, and absolutely love it. Got to love assassinating the Pope so you can install your friendly Cardinal instead.

Re: Pascal FP16 rate question

It's hardware. As it turns out, when it comes to FP16 NVIDIA has made another significant divergence between the HPC-focused GP100, and the consumer-focused GP104. On GP100, these FP16x2 cores are used throughout the GPU as both the GPU’s primarily FP32 core and primary FP16 core. However on GP104, ...

The music in FF6 Advance is out of tune in places (particularly the battle theme). I played it on a GBA SP back when it released, because I was super excited to revisit it, and was immediately disappointed. They also "fixed" many of the translation quirks I grew to love - "Son of a s...

The "remaster" of V and VI made them look like RPGMaker trash. They totally screwed it up.

Meanwhile, the SVP chip in Virtua Racing is the only accelerator chip on the Genesis. Sega went the much more confusing and expensive route of making the 32X. Apparently they originally planned to make the SVP a "lock on" cart- you'd buy the SVP separately, and then plug game carts in the...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

Has the price rise lasted long enough to affect the prices of prebuilt systems? Presumably the likes of Alienware and HP Omen have long term supply agreements from AMD and NVidia, so they shouldn't be particularly affected by the fact that Newegg's shipment is getting bought up by cryptominers.

I'm now wondering if there's a way to tell in software (i.e. without disassembly) whether my CPU is soldered or socketed. I have an old mini-PC with an i3-2330M, which is available both in soldered and socketed. If socketed I could try upgrading to an Ivy Bridge chip...

Re: Who is still using PCI slots these days?

Personally I think it's ridiculous when you have an MATX motherboard with 4 slots and one of them is PCI. Normally the PCIe x16 will hold a graphics card which will cover up one of the PCIe x1 slots meaning you have one PCIe x1 left for WIFI NIC, Soundcard, additional USB ports, TV card etc. I'm pr...

Put in a bid on a low-priced 470 on eBay, the HTPC could do with a GPU upgrade. Just hope it's not been too roughly abused.

I wasn't really aware of this until recently, but Final Fantasy is apparently a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. Everyone forgets to even mention the lack of AVX on these. As a consumer (and G3258 owner), I'm sad to see it go, but as a developer, I wish it and the rest of Intel's AVX-less chips to stay gone. If not for this ridiculous b******t, I could default to AVX in the not-too-distant future. As is, what...

Re: Skylake X: Bye Bye Rings, Hello Mesh

There have been murmurs of socketed GPUs for awhile. nVidia's P100 and V100 cards using nvLink mezzanine are probably the closest to a socketed GPU today. The connector used is similar to what several other high end chips like Itanium or IBM main frame books used in the past. Until recently, it rea...

It used 1100 of them in a rack. A single workstation, does not count :) Squint harder! :D Though any x86 chip post AMD64 can be considered the same, going by OP's criteria. I think the closest you can really come is "this much performance was on the top500 a decade ago" for a single works...
