Re: Panicked Response to AMD Epyc... from Oracle

In other news --- Sparc is still a thing, apparently. At least for now.

Larry Ellison always wanted to out-Microsoft Microsoft, and he seems to have succeeded in one metric: Oracle is even worse than Redmond at acquiring companies and then pissing them into nothingness.

Re: Windows Explorer taking a long time to launch

Are you on a domain or otherwise have networking credentials (VPN, mounted network drives, etc) that may be taking time to resolve? What version of Windows? For stuff like this, enabling the Bootlog (via MSCONFIG.EXE) and then poring over the results is often the slowest-but-surest way to identify t...

Re: OK TR, where's the Vega OMG Unboxing Story?

Frankly it's silly. I don't care what it looks like. This, so much. I don't understand why anyone thought it was a good idea to do the first one. And once someone did one, I don't know why anybody thought "You know what we need? More of these ." There are greater wastes of bandwidth on th...

Sounds like there is meta data being stored somewhere that the camera is reading; are you sure you've looked at the card with all hidden files visible? You may have to look at the card via a proper card reader and not via the camera. Or perhaps use some desktop software Sony provides that knows how ...

Wow, I saw this thread and thought it was recent news. I scrolled back to Hance's original post from over a year ago and wondered how I could possibly have missed it. Re: Symmetric Multi Turboboost

That overlaps with their SMT=Simultaneous Multi-Threading moniker though. I know :D But it bugs me that the Ryzen and ThreadRipper boost mechanism does not take advantage of spatial symmetry. If you keep moving the same high-frequency-benefiting task from core to core, you have to move a bunch of d...

Re: Air filtered through water

So it's a hookah for your furnace? I assume it using running water or flushes itself frequently (otherwise you have stagnant water sitting around filling up with whatever is coming out of the air) so that adds to your water bill, and there's a pump and other complexity. Seems like the kind of thing ...

I've otherwise been getting regular updates via Windows Update, but no Creators Update yet. Microsoft said it will withhold the update from machines that it knows of compatibility issues. I ...

Re: Native American Pemmican

Pemmican is basically what makes up some "suet blocks" you can buy to put in your bird feeders. Which isn't to say it's not decent human food (though I wouldn't eat the commercial suet products). One thing about buffalo meat -- it has almost no fat, so you need to add fat to it to get the ...

Re: TR Baseball 2017

That's only possible when the pitcher records an out. Plenty of pitchers have come in and given up runs without getting anyone out. All those LOOGY types who have an outing go terribly wrong and give up a homer, for instance. No ERA because there's no pace to completing a game when that happens. An...

Intel could easily "tile" 4+ cores into a node without much engineering if they've already done 2. Working with HBM coupling to CPU and GPU has probably given AMD a boost in experience with respect to infinity fabric and memory controllers. My guess is that looming :D on the horizon; both...

If you look around on here I think there are a couple of threads focused on good games for very young children (the various Lego ones got a lot of ups, as I recall). Re: Personal Supercomputer, didn't know there was such a thing.

The initial model, the Cray-1A, weighed 5.5 tons including the Freon refrigeration system. Configured with 1 million words of main memory, the machine and its power supplies consumed about 115 kW of power; cooling and storage likely more than doubled this figure. I took a tour of Boeing Computer Se...

Yeah, these started popping up all over the place a couple of years ago. It's possible it's not actually the IGP but the motherboard. I've certainly had connectors fail at the solder joints. If the motherboard has an alternate display output (eg DVI instead of HDMI, or even VGA), did you try that?

SP = Starting Pitcher RP = Relief Pitcher You can put either in a slot marked just "P". You want some of both, as SPs get you wins and RPs get you saves. Yes, usually you have more SPs than there are SP slots and (usually) more RPs (closers) than you have RP slots. Since SPs only start on...

Re: Intel Core i7 2600 overheating while playing.

The thing is, when a CPU runs really hot it tends to cook the thermal paste; thereafter, the paste gets worse and worse at its job and you get hotter temps until you remove the heatsink to clean and reapply everything. At least, that was my experience a few years ago; I haven't had a hot CPU in a wh...
