Re: How about an Rx 480... for $640

As enticing as it was to sell my $210 RX480 for $400, I chose to enter into Ethereum mining last night. Figured I'd try it for a month and see what it's all about. Heck, according to ROI calculators, my one RX480 should net me $150/mo profit (after power bill). And at least I can still play games, ...

Sorry, we don't all work in the tech industry, despite this being a tech site, and my child is only 3 so hasn't yet had to use it.

BRB, gotta return to the damp, worm riddled dirt beneath the rock that apparently shields me from things like PowerPoint.

Re: Samsung C24FG70—best monitor, worst support

Just wanted to post here, I have very similar requirements for a monitor. I have a BenQ XL2720Z and its been a great monitor for about a year now... the only monitor I like more than my 12 year old HP p1230 CRT (which I actually switched back to for a while before buying this BenQ). The only issues ...

Re: Hi-Fi VHS: It really does sound good

Interesting, I've never heard of HiFi VHS. I can definitely see why it didn't catch on though. It doesn't matter how good it sounds the first time if it degrades as quickly as VHS (video) tapes did. I've listened to audio cassettes that sounded fine after years of use, but most home-recorded VHS tap...

Re: Bitcoin bubble-tastic??

I wonder if Bitcoin's repeated use in ransomware schemes has effected its popularity. The vast majority of people do not use and have likely never heard of Bitcoin, and yet if their computer suddenly tells them everything they have stored on it will be gone unless they send $300 in Bitcoin to someon...

Re: Starfalcon's Great Hardware Inventory

After googling model numbers countless times I've resorted to defacing cards with a sharpie or if it's something more valuable I put a sticker on it giving the real name and specs of the card. I still have a boatload of hardware I promised myself (and my wife) I would sell off. Mostly 3dfx cards. I...

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

I'm still rocking a Coolermaster 690 II Advance case and an XFX XTR 550W PSU. I've had this case for probably 7 years. I bought it to replace my Antec P180B when I had a GTX 470 in my rig. I definitely needed more airflow for that thing. I'm glad I never went with anything smaller because I recently...

While I personally am not one to worry about things like this, it does seem somewhat ironic that people will trust a random person on the internet enough to download a file from them that modifies a core component their OS, to allow it to have security updates... hmm. Along with that, many are doing...

I'm so glad I bought my 16GB DDR3 kit when I did. Back in December of 2015 I wasn't sure if I should put more money into my 2500K system or plan to save up for a Skylake\Kabylake\Zen build with DDR4. I decided that my system was still doing quite well and that I could use my 8GB of DDR3-1333 in anot...

So, I got my Accelero S3 in the mail today and after screwing around with it for a while I did manage to get it attached to my PNY GTX 970! I used the larger of the two sets of brackets and used the outer most screw holes on the brackets. These fit my 970 perfectly. For those who may have to do this...

So, after playing some slightly more intensive games, the temps do go up a bit more. Still not "hot" by any means, but once summer hits and I'm dealing with 80F+ ambient temps, I'm sure it will be much harder to cool this card with an old 80mm fan and the small (though decently built with ...

Re: Does a product like this exist? (PCI supplemental power card/extension?)

Are you certain that the PCI slots aren't providing enough power? A 9200SE was pretty standard as far as PCI graphics cards from the early 2000s are concerned.

Also, that's quite a beastly system you're putting together. What do you intend to do with the 9200se in there? :)

Well, I had already typed this reply but accidentally closed the window... DOH. Well, I dismantled my 970 and the fan appears to be permanently attached to the plastic backing plate (the portion that extends beyond the PCB). The specs for the fan are actually listed on the front (inside) of the plate itself, indicating that it must be manufactured that way. It seems to use the ...

Re: Stock GPU cooler compatibility for GTX 970 and others.

Obviously you don't want the same Make/Model fan as you already have. I'd start with searching for fan Make/Model from other blower style GPU coolers and compare fan diameter (which should be pretty standard) mounting screw locations to the fan on your GPU. The cooler on my old evga GTX 660 was pre...

Re: Stock GPU cooler compatibility for GTX 970 and others.

Is the blower fan separate from the cooler shroud? I have to imagine it is. If that's the case, you don't need a whole new cooler, just a new/better blower fan. I was actually just thinking the same thing. I saw a picture of one dismantled partially, and I can't tell if its something that can easil...

Does anyone have any experience swapping coolers for a GTX 970? I have cheapo PNY 970 XLR8 with a blower cooler, and as has been discussed many times before, (in fact I made a thread about it a while ago ) these blowers aren't as good as the old ones. They have a really grating sound to them at any ...

Backups the right way? Dead simple. HD big enough to store everything on the box. SATA3 HD sled. Macrium. Image computer to disk. Use Win eject command to terminate disk session. Put disk in padded holder and place on shelf. Done. Similar to what I do already but I'm not going to do it every night ...
