Re: Retro console gaming

Just FYI, there's a sale right now on the BenQ xl2720z refurbs (as well as other models):
https://www.benqdirect.com/xl2720z-refurb.html

Apparently if you use the code SEPT15 it brings the price down under $250.

They seem to be going in and out of stock.

Re: Retro console gaming

Nah, my 60Hz CRT is fine, so if that's the case I'll have to consider it. It's 2X the price of what I was looking at, so it'll take some thought, but maybe. Like I said, if the price is somewhat doable and you're the kind of person that actually notices the one or two benefits a CRT has over modern...

Re: Retro console gaming

I've always been afraid of strobing because I already get motion sickness and headaches from things like riding in the car as a passenger. De-ghosting would be a super benefit, though... To be a little more clear this would be for my RetroPie, not for the old consoles. Do you experience any discomf...

Re: Retro console gaming

I could probably halve the latency by getting a TV with a proper "Game" mode that turns off all the post-processing and just puts what's sent to it on the screen. And at that point I'd probably be fine. For now I have a CRT but let's be honest, that's a dying trend. Even a 27" 1080p ...

Re: Retro console gaming

My issue with emulation on my HDMI-equipped TV is lag. I need a TV with less latency to the screen. Even my PC mouse has noticeable lag. that's what I get for buying a cheap TV I guess. Display lag and motion blur are the final problems to solve with emulation and retro gaming IMO. I still think if...

Re: Playing with a 41 year old subwoofer

Do you have a picture with the cover off? I honestly didn't even know they made dedicated subwoofers in those days. I have a pair of Pioneer CS99 floor speakers from the early '70s and while they are interesting to listen to, its obvious that they were made before the time when computers were used t...

Re: SATA drives gone from "safely remove device" dialog.

I generally only see internal drives come up as removable when the SATA controller is using completely generic base windows drivers. Once you've installed the proper drivers, it'll generally recognize them as non-removable, unless (as mentioned by Funk) your BIOS has the ability to mark certain SAT...

Does this help? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3083627/internal-sata-drives-show-up-as-removeable-media I'll look into it, but I think the RST driver uses a different registry entry than the Microsoft storage one. I'm still trying to sort out which registry key to use, since it seems to h...

Re: SATA drives gone from "safely remove device" dialog.

It would only have shown your internal drives before if it thought they were removable. Apparently it has now decided that they are all non-removable. IIRC there was a way to change this in older versions of Windows, but I don't recall how. Windows 10 has always shown all of my drives there until i...

SATA drives gone from "safely remove device" dialog.

My case has a SATA drive slot that I use for attaching bare drives to the system for diagnostics. I don't know when Windows 10 decided to change this, but SATA drives are no longer shown when I right or left click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the notification area. ...

Re: System Build August/September delayed?

Personally I don't see what a new system builder guide would do differently. Nothing that's come out in the last four months has any bearing on the price/performance brackets that the TR guide covers. Very true. For all the hype that was generated for Threadripper and i9, they are almost completely...

Re: Power Supply Wattage vs Durability or Longevity?

Wow, you bumped an almost 1 year old thread. :)

As an update, this system is now running an i7 4790 and GTX 1050 Ti. So, it still isn't a power hog by any means and likely would still be happy with the 350W unit, but I'm comfortable having the extra leg room of the 550W.

Re: Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

I use HW Monitor Do you know why it runs all cores at 4Ghz when they aren't under load? You should use a tool that differentiates between cores when measuring clockspeeds. Most programs will just report the highest frequency even if it only applies to a single core. Argus Monitor can do that for you...

Re: Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

A 4790 non-K runs at 3.6, max boost with all cores active is 3.8, and max turbo for a single core is 4Ghz. So it's operating as best it can, short of using an unauthorized BIOS or manually overclocking the base clock. I don't suggest using an older BIOS, had a Z97 motherboard that wouldn't POST wit...

Re: Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

That's very reasonable, it just seemed iffy when you started talking about running older BIOS. I probably wouldn't downgrade my BIOS for 200Mhz at this point, but since the system was working I didn't want to update it and risk losing options if I was just missing something. Also, I have a Cryorig ...

Re: Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

Is it worth the hassle? 200Mhz is only 5% of 4Ghz. In perfect world, that would be 5% more performance. If you really have issues, set the power mode to performance to keep the clocks at max. Disable any extra power saving/sleep features you can. Assuming your cooler is up to task. That's sort of t...

Re: Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

The BIOS you have is the one ASUS released to allow multiplier overclocking for "K" processors on non-Z87/Z97 chipset boards. Other manufacturers had unlocked that feature the year before but Intel had "fixed" it again with microcodes in week 30 of 2013 . It didn't offer anythin...

Forcing max all-core turbo on i7 4790 (non-K) under load.

I recently came into possession of an i7 4790 basically for free, so I swapped out the 4590 in my HTPC to get a little extra oomph and longevity out of the system. It is installed in an Asus B85M-G motherboard. The board is currently running the "Version 2001 2014/06/17" BIOS. I have read ...

Re: Anyone remember how to fix Windows 98?

Since you're cloning the drive, I'd just try installing Windows 98 over top of the old installation to replace all of the system files. If I remember correctly, this was a common practice back in those days. I used Windows 98Se until about 2002-2003 because I didn't like XP, but most of my hands-on ...

So, I pretty much expected that Threadripper wouldn't be something I'd have much use for. Overall, it looks like a good product tho...

Well, I rearranged my fans a bit and tried pushing the overclock a little farther... and I can get it to boot windows and work at 4.7 quite easily, but it seems like its going to take quite a big increase in voltage to actually keep it stable. So I guess I'll be content with 4.5 for now. Instead of ...

Thread title is (mostly) sarcastic... I have a 2500K and since the upgrade itch has been hitting me lately I decide to try pushing my overclock a little further, rather than spend any money. I tried hitting 4.5Ghz again a few months ago and decided against it since my temps went up substantially and...

I got my check a couple days ago too. In the end, this 970 only cost me ~$220, and I bought it back in 2015 when they were normally $300-$350. This settlement basically paid for the aftermarket cooler I bought several months ago. I'm running it with an Arctic Accellero S3 with a single 120mm fan (ne...
