PCI-E Lanes for a Chipset

I'm confused as all hell right now. Take the Z490 chipset for example. There is a block diagram for this chipset that has a line connected to the chipset that says up to 24 lanes for PCI-E 3.0. On the same diagram there are three separate lines connected to the CPU that say 1x16 or 2x8 or (1x8 and 2...

Re: Which processor would you choose?

I actually have an i7-4770k right now. I'm not looking to upgrade at this moment I was just looking into what's on the market right now and trying to learn more about computers (I know very little). But for what I've done the i7 has worked very well. I've had no issues. But I also have no idea if I ...

Re: Which processor would you choose?

I'm not sure I follow...why would my processor running at close to its maximum turbo boost frequency for everyday lightly-threaded use make me want to consider moving up to the i5-9600K? Is there harm in my CPU doing that? I understand I can move up the spec sheet for a few dollars...this isn't real...

Which processor would you choose?

I'm curious to get the opinions from those with more knowledge than me (which is probably all of you). Sticking with Intel 8th/9th generation Intel CPU's, which CPU would recommend assuming the following uses and considerations: Occasional video editing of 1080 footage with Sony Vegas as a hobby, ph...

Re: New Laptop Suggestions?

Thank you very much everyone. I'm not sure why I wrote that I needed an optical drive (lol). I think I am going to roll with a refurbished (as much as that scares me) HP Probook. Found them for barely over $100, including shipping.

New Laptop Suggestions?

I am looking to purchase a laptop to aid me in working on my truck using AutoEnginuity scan tool software. Looking for something that is inexpensive yet reliable. The website and user guide for the AutoEnginuity software provide conflicting information for minimum requirements so I will list the &qu...

He has no laptop plus if he did that would defeat the purpose of not taking up space on the desk. Sounds like the NUC is the way to go...but still going to try and talk him into the fun of building a desktop :) Thanks guys!

What would you use...

A friend of mine recently told me that he was considering purchasing an HP all-in-one and asked what I thought of it. I told him I think it's a horrible idea. I suggested he build instead. Despite having a ton of room on a rather large desk, he said he didn't have the room for a desktop and thought ...

Integrated Graphics or Cheap Video Card?

I guess I have multiple questions I hope someone can help answer for me. 1. If you were to make a new build using a 6th gen i3 or i5 processor with no intention of gaming or video editing (or using any kind of intensive software), is there ever a reason to purchase one of the cheaper graphics cards ...

Re: No "Tax Refund" TR System Guide?

I have a feeling that you will be happy as all hell with the components you want to get. If I were to build myself a new system right now I think I would use that same motherboard.

Re: H110 or H170 chipset motherboard?

Is it really not a good board if it comes with the same warranty as a board that costs an additional $30? I guess $30 really is nothing when you expect to use the computer for 4 or more years. I wouldn't cheap out on the motherboard or memory. Every time I done that I ran into problems. BTW what is...

H110 or H170 chipset motherboard?

A good $30 can be saved by purchasing an H110 chipset motherboard rather than an H170. I have looked up the differences between the features of both and I get them but I don't get them. If I build a system that will never need a graphics card and would only be used to browse the web, watch videos on...

Re: H110 with RAID Card? Or H170?

You could do software raid 1, and if your not bothered by running Windows 8.1/10 you could use Storage Spaces. If your preferred operating system is Linux then software raid would be the way to go for RAID 1. By going with software RAID you can still get the H110 Asus board for $61. For Storage Spa...

Re: H110 with RAID Card? Or H170?

I'd use software raid for the data drives so you don't need to worry about raid support on the mobo or getting a separate card. That's assuming the mobo has enough sata ports for your needs. I'd also consider not doing raid at all and using the second hard drive as an actual backup  I'm confu...

H110 with RAID Card? Or H170?

Here's the situation. Say I want a computer with one SSD and 2 mechanical hard drives for my mass storage. I would like to have those 2 spinning hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. I want to save money on a motherboard and get an H110 Asus board for $61. The H110 doesn't support RAID so if I coul...

Re: How does proper cooling work (as for 900D high end build

JAE you just gave me a flashback to a Materials Engineering class I took about 10 years ago. I didn't retain too much from it. If a larger case has say 2 fans on the front and 1 fan at the top rear for exhaust will the case still have positive pressure if the entire top of the case perforated (even ...

Re: First Build (REVISED 03/14/2014)

So I got the Corsair CX 500m power supply. When I plug it into the wall and flip the switch to the "on" position, shouldn't the fan start up? Mine didn't so I am assuming it's dead. Not a good start to my first build. What I did was I was going to test the LED light strip that just came in...

Re: Help me with my i7 Gaming Rig Build

If your goal really is a 1080p gaming machine without cutting any unreasonable corners, this is what I would recommend: CPU - Intel i5-4670k - $240 Motherboard - Asus Z87-A - $140 GPU - Asus GTX 760 - $265 RAM - 8 GB 1600 (any brand) - $80 SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB - $140 HDD - WD Red 3 TB - $13...

Re: First Build (REVISED 03/14/2014)

I went ahead and ordered that video card on Amazon for that same price. I hear ya Chrispy. I think the card is going to be great for what I do in Sony Vegas. The substantially decreased rendering times are what really sold me. Is that whole Haswell/Power Supply compatibility thing a crock? Some of t...
