Re: The Ryzen 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G CPUs

For Kodi live tv, you have to have a PVR backend. I use Next PVR with Kodi as the front end on my HTPC, and it seems to work pretty well.

Re: Need advice on new graphics cards for Dell XPS 420 & XPS

I believe something like a 750ti would work nicely in a computer like this, and it is a very low power card which should work fine with the original power supply. I guess the big question is, does your dad plan to do any actual gaming on it? If not, a 750ti may be a bit overkill.

Strange issue with Asus AC-66U Router

Hi all, I have had the Asus AC-66U for a little over a year now, and all has been well. Very stable and reliable. Well, Time Warner recently let me know that they were bumping my internet speeds to 300 mbps, up from 100. I received their new modem and immediately put it to bridge mode, and all was w...

Westbrook348 - definitely go with Deus Ex: Human Revolution first, preferably the director's cut. It's a truly fantastic game, and a great PC game at that, unlike ACIII

Re: 'Upgrade' to 780Ti now from Reference R9 290 or wait?

Can you clarify what kind of PSUs you have been using to test stability on the cards. I see where you mentioned that you tried a different PSU, but I don't see any clarification on which PSUs you're trying. Running SLI or X-Fire without a good enough PSU can introduce a tremendous amount of stabilit...

Re: Witcher 3 - sky banding issues

Makes a lot of sense on the display size, thanks for clarification. Just a bit jarring, because the rest of the game is so insanely beautiful with settings cranked. Ah well, I'm still completed enamoredwith this game and loving every minute of it.

Re: Witcher 3 - sky banding issues

Meadows, thanks for the detailed information! All of that makes sense, and option C does sound like it would be the better solution. How much performance cost would we be talking about? I have tried changing the sharpening settings, and the banding is still present at 1440p. I'm really thinking this...

Witcher 3 - sky banding issues

Hi all, I've been enjoying The Witcher 3 immensely, and even more so since I got my 2560*1440 IPS display and two GTX 970s to run in SLI. It is gorgeous and runs great. However, I'm noticing something at this higher resolution that didn't stand out to me at 1080p. There appears to be a very noticeab...

Re: I finally did it. GTX 970 SLI

I actually just got the regular Windforce, not the G1s. Newegg had a nice rebate offer on the normal one that brought the price to just a hair over $300 a piece, and the G1's were $350 with no rebate... wasn't big on spending $100 more for a pair of those with marginal benefit. Besides, my regular W...

I finally did it. GTX 970 SLI

So I finally bit the bullet and got myself two Gigabyte Windforce 970's to add to my system. To go along with that, a nice EVGA SuperNOVA 850W PSU to replace the Corsair CX600M I currently have. Pair that with an Acer 27 inch QHD screen that was on sale for a nice price, and I feel like I'm ready to...

Re: HTPC Build - Going strong for 6+ months!

To my knowledge, native netflix within XBMC is not possible atm due to the DRM Netflix has in place. It'd be awesome if they made an official addon for XBMC, but I don't see that ever happening. I've thought about using Win 8 for the HTPC if only for the superior netflix app that it has, but seems l...

Re: HTPC Build - Going strong for 6+ months!

Hmm, where to begin? I'll start with the software I'm running: XBMC 12.3 Frodo Power DVD 13 Ultra WMC Netflix Steam in 'big picture' view NextPVR as DVR backend (XBMC has a PVR addon that works pretty well, so integration with XBMC is really tight) Misc XBMC addons / custom skin I am using a Windows...

HTPC Build - Going strong for 6+ months!

I thought I would share this, as I finally got around to taking pics and documenting it. I completed this build in mid 2013. It started out as a mix of old and new, as I had some spare parts laying around that I wanted to put to use. It then turned into a pretty in depth build, as I wanted this litt...

Re: NEC EA244WMi IPS Monitor

I don't think cheap 4K is as close as you think it is. 4 GTX Titan Black cards in SLI cannot run Crysis 3 with max details at 4K. That's $4K (no pun intended!) of graphics hardware that cannot run a modern game at 4K with max settings at 60fps. 1440p is definitely more attractive, but I am hesitant ...

Re: NEC EA244WMi IPS Monitor

Yes, that's what I'm aiming for. I have limited desk space where my comp is at, and I also have concerns about being to run games on high settings at 1440p on my GTX 770. Also, I have heard concerns about quality control on the cheap Korean IPS panels. I plan to use this monitor for many years, so I...

NEC EA244WMi IPS Monitor

Hi all. Anyone have any experience with this monitor? Newegg has a pretty nice deal on it right now, and I've been looking for a nice IPS monitor to complement my new build. I've been very interested in the Dell U2412M and the Asus PA248Q, but I have heard that quality is hit and miss. With the NEC,...

Re: New 4770K build, just delidded processor

The existing TIM/epoxy are good enough for stock speeds. That's what Intel cares about, because 99%+ of their CPUs will be run at stock. If going above and beyond "good enough" to satisfy a tiny percentage of their customer base costs them extra money for production retooling and/or highe...

Update! I just received my Liquid Ultra and applied it to the CPU die. I have to say, I'm impressed. I was thermal throttling before the delid, pushing low to mid 90s after the delid and with Arctic Silver 5, and now... well, I'll share this picture and it should speak for itself. http://i.imgur.com...

Thanks for the advice! I'll give it a try to see what I can get out of it. I feel you have a much happier overclocking chip than I. I bring pictures! The Noctua TIM on the CPU die was causing high temps on core# 0 again, so I took it apart and applied some Arctic Silver 5 until my Liquid Ultra comes...

New 4770K build, just delidded processor

Hi all. So I just completed a build, and I have been rather unhappy with it. I was one of the unlucky ones that got a very poor overclocking 4770k. Try as I might, I could not get my system stable at anything more than 4.0 ghz at 1.2 volts. I could go higher of course, but then my system could not h...

Re: your prediction: iPad, success or failure?

The lack of multitasking is epic fail for this thing. People don't necessarily expect the ability to run multiple apps on their cell phone. On a computer, which is what many people will use this thing as, it's essential. It also has the power to run multiple apps, so the fact that it won't is sheer ...
