Re: Can a 144Hz display help reduce eye strain?

Unless... not to be insulting, just to be sure—you have set your monitor to 144Hz, right? I have found that it's important to check because sometimes Windows doesn't properly default to the highest refresh rate. Fair question. Both the nVida control panel in Windows and the Asus monitor on-screen-d...

Re: Can a 144Hz display help reduce eye strain?

Spyder do you have issues with your eyes you were hoping to fix? Hopefully you will find some time for some casual gaming. No issues, my eyesight is getting worse with age, which I attribute mainly to staring at a display, so I do try and buy quality displays and take frequent breaks. And thanks fo...

Re: Can a 144Hz display help reduce eye strain?

I went from a 60Hz Dell Ultrasharp IPS to a 144Hz Asus IPS. Primary purpose was gaming, but in reality I'm too busy and use the new display for plenty of office work. Honestly, I noticed zero difference and was pretty disappointed. From what I had read, the jump from 60 to 144 was supposed to be dra...

I am afraid I don't have any suggestions, just wanted to chime in that I think what you are proposing to do sounds REALLY cool, never heard of somebody with 192GB of RAM, and using the old Intel X25 SSD as an image drive sounds brilliant. I look forward to hearing about the results. Bonus points wil...

Re: Gaming Audio for Dummies, Help?

Compare running optical from the Z to the Audioengine versus just plugging the Audioengine DAC straight into USB, versus just using the sound card alone. I'm currently quite happy with a pair of HD555's and my X-Fi Platinum for clarity and positioning, especially in FPS's. For the DAC, can you expl...

Re: Gaming Audio for Dummies, Help?

So as a follow-up question: Let's say I decide to go with a standard, but quality, set of normal (non-gaming) headphones. Let's also say I stay away from virtual surround sound and instead stick standard audio, as intended by a game engine. Should I use my Creative Soundblaster Z or my Audioengine D...

Thanks for the feedback, Topinio, superjawes, and slowriot. I appreciate it! Sounds like I was not too far off. I will test virtual surround sound vs. OFF (using only in-game options). Re: Gaming Audio for Dummies, Help?

Have you tried running with your current gear and virtual surround sound? No, I probably should do that, huh? Would have made sense to test out first before asking questions. My bad. I have been traveling for work and have not been home, but will test out this weekend. I understand that headphones ...

Re: Opinions on Xbox 360 controller vs the Xbox One controll

I find the triggers and top buttons on the original 360 controller are much easier to reach compared to the One controller. This is obviously a matter of personal preference related to grip and hand size. Other than that, the One controller seems to have a nicer fit and finish.

Re: Should I keep my current monitor or go G-sync?

Good points all. To properly drive a 1440p, I probably need a more powerful GPU. However, isn't the real benefit of G-sync when your frame rate is fluctuating, and not pegged at the refresh rate? With high frame rates, such as those at 100Hz or above, you'll enjoy the buttery smoothness of a 144Hz ...

Re: Should I keep my current monitor or go G-sync?

I have heard that once you go with G-Sync and 144Hz, you will never want to go back. Apparently, the upgrade is noticeable and very good. On the other hand, you already have a very nice 27" IPS display. To get an equivalent sized display with G-Synz and 144Hz, you'll probably need to spend at l...

Re: Do I upgrade my 2500k?

Hard to consider paying $450+ to go from a 4GHz Sandy Bridge to a semi-old Haswell or a 4GHz Skylake. The other CPU options seem really, really expensive. I upgraded from a 2500K to a 6700K and haven't really "felt" a speed difference during ordinary tasks (I upgraded only because I had so...

Chrispy_, thanks for the feedback! Ditch the SoundBlaster Z - check your new board's audio solution is acceptable enough to you first, but you'll find that the artificial brightening of the SBZ and non-flat output does a disservice to your M-Audios. That, and the Creative software is a nightmare fro...
