Re: New tech site purportedly worth following

Well, as someone who previously owned a domain (and hosted a small site) dedicated to the DYMT forum thread, I suppose I can't be too critical of impulse buy domains! Believe me, after the novelty wears off, you'll get tired of paying the renewal fee. I hope you only registered it for one yea...

Re: The impending death of the 3.5mm audio port gains a new ally

I still wouldn't be surprised to see USB type-C on the iPhone 7, partially for this reason (Apple follows standards if it's perfectly convenient to; also it would allow you to still use the same headphones between a Mac and an iPhone). They already did that on the 12" Macbook, after all... Wel...

Re: The impending death of the 3.5mm audio port gains a new ally

Let's back up a bit. Here's what I want - something simple, that doesn't involve charging more devices, that's industry standard, and that just plain works. No wireless glitches, it doesn't have to be the shiniest thing, but it has to do the job reliably and not screw around (as BT devices tend to s...

I don't think that's a fair comparison though. A good SSD - that means, what, it does its job reliably, it's fast, and has lots of space? It only has one job, and it's not something you look at or think about most of the time. Some cheap SSDs are fine, some are unreliable pieces of junk that like to...

MØ - Final Song

Hit the top charts in Denmark (where she's from), Norway, and UK. Yet, I've never heard it on any radio in the US (makes me wonder what else is popular there, music-wise).

Have you tried using Microsoft's "Show Hide in Windows 10" tool? Use Google and look for "download wushowhide" then take the Microsoft Support Link. It seems like a strange Interface, but it does seem to work. Also go into the "Device Manager" and then "View"...

You guys notice the problem here? You rarely hear people saying that OS X 10.x came out, and I had to do a clean install to get things working. You just install the in place upgrade, it just works (the vast, vast majority of the time) for the average user, done. Yes, they have significantly fewer ha...

Re: Preliminary results for Crucial BX200 degraded read spee

Of course, Corollas don't suddenly loose power for a while just because you revved it hard up a hill on I-5 for a while. Yet, I've seen cheap SSDs get incredibly slow and make the system hang for a while just because I did a few hundred GB of reads and writes. Copying over a bunch of movies in that ...

It's getting SOO much harder to pick a good budget drive these days-Nearly everything below 850EVO is either a LEMON or just above LEMON status-Only real exception is WD/Sandisk ultra 2. We are truly living in the future. Now you have to fight your OS to use the drivers you want. :) Win10's dumbed down Metro Control Panel is also a joy to behold. Thumb drives cost more than DVDs actually, though still not too much. At retail, as I recall, it's like $20/100 discs vs $5 for a cheap 16GB drive. Less than that, even: http://www.microcenter.com/product/458256/16GB_Store_'n'_Go_USB_Flash_Drive_3_pack (but still a lot more expensive than DVDs). I ...

Different strokes. I don't consider needing to use CLI or vim to be hell; heck I do that kind of stuff on a near-daily basis at my day job (and have done so for years). To this day my reflex is to open a CLI window and use vim when I need to do a quick config edit; I even have a global hotkey progr...

Well, coming back to this months later... the spring connectors on the Lepai were getting a little finicky (i.e. move it, and a channel cuts out), so I took it as an excuse to buy the Topping. It's only 30W per channel, but it's a *clean* 30W. Gets up just as loud as the Lepai, but doesn't distort a...

My feeling with Ubuntu/Mint is that if it happens to like your config/use case (ex. Intel video card, running common stuff like Chrome, etc), you're basically set. If it doesn't, you're in for hell (ex. going to a command line desktop to use vim, install an nvidia driver via text, having to know how...

I half-figured Microsoft would allow something like this. They can't extend the promotion without encouraging people to procrastinate even more, but at the same time Microsoft will still be happy to have people upgrade older OS's to 10. This way people in the know that still need or want to upgrade...

I'm curious, did it reinstall any apps (like Get Office or Sway), or did it leave that alone? I've had issues with this in the past, but it seems to be earlier builds, and not letting Win10 sit for a little (and checking the store updates) before messing with it. Yep, it reinstalls every single use...

I'm always amazed at how a sensor can go bad, yet only make that known briefly once every several weeks or so (goes away when it's replaced). Mom's car has this annoying habit of turning the TPMS light on once, for a minute or so, in the middle of long drives on the highway. It's been doing that for...

For what it's worth, you can buy corporate surplus desktop machines, even Sandy Bridge, for $150 these days - and power consumption will be more like 40W on idle (plus some for more drives). Was that 223W for idle or transcoding video? It doesn't really matter if you were using electric heating anyw...

Do they, by any chance, allow you to use fingerprints without a PIN now? I see no point of a PIN when I have a full keyboard, so I set the PIN to something really long/that wrote down as a text file on the computer (I can use the password for any of it anyway) to minimize that security risk.

Eh, I think you're misinterpreting that one... Kinda reads to me like "we use the data you give us so we can do the job, nothing more", which is fair enough. That said, tracking. Tracking me on the web vs in the OS is like tracking when I rent a car vs one that I own. One is temporary, the...

Sometimes I wonder if it even matters. With all content using lossy compression, fancy IQ stuff like HDR monitors seems kind of like polishing a turd to me. They are powered studio monitors. Big electrolytics would be on the DC output side of the power supply. --SS In that case, it shouldn't matter. The common thing I see is the capacitor selection gave no consideration for operating temperature, so they get baked when in use. If you replace them, sele...
