Re: Don't call it a comeback...

We're runnin' notfred, and messed up and were only using 4 cores instead of 8. Fixed, this should be another big week. Once they turn in to SQL servers the ride's over, but we figured the team could use a shot in the arm for a couple of weeks. Hey, so you mean you may not overtake me, and I may get...

Re: Read-only USB flash drive?

Man, A fellow after my own heart. I've been howling for more drives to have a read-only switch, but they keep getting less and less on the market. The biggest capacity drive I've found with a switch is the RiData 8GB for about $20. If you find any bigger drives, let me know. http://www.newegg.com/P...

What about formatting with NTFS. options.

Not an option I want to be messing with on a malware-infected machine - a nice visible "read-only" switch is foolproof.

Read-only USB flash drive?

Hi guys, From time to time I have to clean up a malware-infected PC. I'd like to get files and clean-up tools on to these machines via a USB flash drive, but I don't want the drive compromised, so I have been looking for a USB flash drive with a read-only switch on it. I have seen them in the past b...

VelociRaptor: BLFS vs HLFS

Hi guys, Looking at buying a VelociRaptor online (ie, I can't eyeball the package). I only need 150GB for the system drive so am looking at a WD1500HLFS, which is the backplane-ready version (the 300GB GLFS is lots dearer): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=499 Any problems using t...

I'm getting lots of "Attempt #xx to get work failed, and no other work to do", and have about a quarter of my available cores twiddling their thumbs :(

Re: Best overclock in years

Strange, since you were already running a 64-bit host, I would assume you can run 64-bit VMs without even needing VT? Nope. I'd have thought so too, but there's a KB article on VMWare's support site detailing requirements. In Intel-land, you must have a VT-capable CPU, irrespective of the OS you're...

Best overclock in years

Hi guys, Been a while since I posted here. I think the last serious overclock I attempted was on a 66MHz Celeron (333MHz -> 500MHz, if I remember rightly). I have a PC at a clients' site. It was a cheap box, built with a E2180 CPU and Gigabyte G33 chipset board (I RDP to it mostly, so no need for fa...

Dell Precision M6300 question

Hi guys, A client is looking at the Precision M6300, based primarily on its ability to use 8GB of RAM in two SODIMM slots. I checked the machine specs and then the Intel specs for the chipset (the PM965) and Intel reckon it only supports 4GB. Someone's fibbing - any ideas who? I have not seen anothe...

I just broke 1.8 million, and overtook Nullfire/Druid to claim overall 10th spot in the team. Summer is on the way down here so will be reducing my output and surrendering a couple of spots to pwdrhnd23 and monts.

It doesn't look like anyone has mentioned it but the 5000 series Xeons are Netburst based chips while the 5100 chips are Core 2 based chips. UberGerbil did in his post. I personally find the numbering schemes a bit confusing. I would rather have a more realistic estimation of average performance. T...

The crazy thing is that you can't select the 50xx or 51xx Xeon's for comparison in Intel's Product Comparison tool. Also, the different feature tables show different features (eg 4MB cache vs 2x2MB cache for the 5050). And the big bugbear - under "Architecture" they show "65nm" or similar rather tha...

Xeon model numbers: what crack were these guys smoking?!?!

Hi, Just looking at pricing up an entry-level ProLiant for a job. There's now a G3 revision of the ML150, so I go and look at configuration options. There are two Xeon processor options: the 5050 and the 5110. Now here's the issue: the 5050 is clocked at 3.00GHz and the 5110 is clocked at 1.60GHz, a...

Both of you will overtake me, probably this year, as I'll be losing a lot of production soon. I would like to claim the 10th spot, even if it is only for a while.

The quest for 10th

Hi, It might be worth keeping an eye on this battle. I'm currently ranked as the number 12 folder for the team, and should overtake pmeysemb and Nulfire/Druid to claim spot #10, some time around mid-November is my guess. The spanner in the works is pwdrhnd23 , who has (until recently) been out-produ...

I am also shutting down almost all of my borged machines, only for me it's likely to be a one-way trip. The threat has been there for some months, but it's finally coming to pass.

So long Top 20, it's a sad demise for a once-ranked-#6 folder....
