Why? Is your build that secretive that no one should copy?

After I emptied the list into my shopping cart on Amazon, I deleted the list. Then I realized that broke the link here, so I removed it. Sorry.

Re: New analytics machine -- how does this parts list look?

Terrific suggestions...thanks again, gents!

I've been building PCs for >30 years now and it never ceases to amaze me how fast things evolve. :-)

Re: New analytics machine -- how does this parts list look?

Thanks, all...greatly appreciate the feedback. The mobo choice was mostly about future-proofing -- I tend to keep machines a long time -- but the point about it being overkill is a good one. I'm not planning on OCing it, in order to maximize reliability, so can probably dial that back a bit. Very va...

New analytics machine -- how does this parts list look?

Hey, all. I'm building a new system for handling analytics duties. It's used mainly for running simulation software, statistical analysis on large datasets, and other memory- and processor-intensive uses. Based on discussions here and elsewhere, based on a $2000 max budget, here's the parts list I'v...

Re: Waiting for new TR system guide...anyone else?

C: A $555 Threadripper 1950X offers 16 cores and 32 threads for a very accessible price. You'll have to spend $45 more to add a CPU cooler. Yeah, I think that's a bit outside my price range. This is my home machine, after all...truly serious work happens at the office with someone else paying for h...

Re: Waiting for new TR system guide...anyone else?

It's a bit difficult to make recommendations without knowing what you intend to do with the PC and how much you are wanting to spend on it. I really didn't expect anyone to produce a custom shopping list for me...that's what the SG is for, innit? ;-D But since you asked, I don't game anymore on my ...

Looking for new TR System Guide

The current System Guide is now over 6 months old. In PC hardware terms, that's about 11 years. My current PC, which was built a fairly long time ago based roughly on a TR system guide configuration, needs to be replaced. Can anyone confirm if there's a new System Guide in the works? If so, when wil...

How long a wait for Spectre/Meltdown-proof CPUs?

How long do we think consumers will need to wait before CPUs designed to avoid the Spectre and Meltdown bugs (i.e., are safe without after-the-fact patches) come to market? 12 months? 18? Longer?
