You can find me at the Level1Techs forum. It skews heavily towards the linux and BSD crowd, but the forum is pretty active... ... plus being(mostly) free of politics. :P As far as written reviews go, yeah you're not really going to find much of that there. There's companion guides and tutorials and ...
Oh hai. I still lurk every now and then, but I'm logged out most of the time, and I don't really post anymore. I spend more time at the level one techs forum mostly.
Yeah I work with a guy who uses a macbook even though most of the work is in .net core. The OS does a decent job of staying out of your way while still providing you with the tools you need to get things done which is probably why a lot of devs use it even if they're not working on Apple stuff.
FreeNAS is nifty. :P After doing some upgrades here in the home office I ditched the Synology box, and set up a FreeNAS box using(mostly) spare parts. The board has only four SATA ports, and since I planned on using a spare i3 6100 I didn't want to mess with trying to find a new one. For storage the...
I guess being a 1.5 trillion dollar company makes it slightly easier to make a consumer product that's really just for software development on their own platform.
I dunno though, the macbooks seem to fill that role pretty well already.
Yeah that's true. I've heard video editing on the ipad actually works pretty well assuming you're using a codec that's supported in hardware. Obviously the hardware has to be good before choice of codec can make a difference. I'm not sure how much of a priority macOS really is for Apple in general, ...
The CPU was never the problem when trying to virtualize macOS. It was the lack of GPU acceleration. Without hardware acceleration from the GPU you're going to have a hard time running many things people typically use Mac desktops to do unless you've overspecced the machine and are subjecting it to a...
The alternative is to build whatever machine you need whenever the old one finally does shuffle off, and then set up a windows7 virtual machine for the older games. That's what I would do, but I'm not sure on the details of that if you want to use windows as the host also.
Yeah I dunno. I'm sure he could retire any time he wanted at this point, but Keller doesn't strike me as a dude who's going to do that just so he can go surfing more, or something.
No worries, and yeah if the CPU is the only thing in the loop, then a 280mm rad would be good for the i9 9900K also. If you've already got 120mm fans and you want to go the AIO route, then I'd be tempted to look for something with a 240 or 360mm radiator just so you can use them. Either of those wou...
I'd stick with the 280. That should fit in the top of the 750D. It can support 3x120 in the top but not 3x140, and a 280mm rad should be fine for a 3770K.
BIG ATTABOY!!! to Cobo for figuring it out on his own and not giving up! :D +1 I recently had a situation where I had about 2k in hardware sitting on my desk in the middle of a bench test, and the first time I powered it on I got no video. I was firmly in "don't panic" territory, but I st...
I don't know how familiar you are with epoxy, but if you're going to do a project involving a big epoxy pour, then you might want to check out John Malecki's channel on youtube. He does a lot of epoxy projects, and has a few videos specifically about tips for large epoxy pours. Here's a recent one, ...
Cool project. I have some epoxy in the shop I might be able to use for something like that. Big epoxy pours are indeed tricky. Epoxy can smell your fear.
I like the clock idea. I might rummage through the scrap bin in the shop and mount it inset in some kind of backer. Since it's an ITX board it's a bit small to cram in all twelve numerals on the board its self, but I dunno it might work. I didn't get a chance to look at it last weekend, so maybe I w...
Yeah, they're all solvable problems, but it might be a while before things return to normal. Pickings were slim when I picked up my latest PSU, but even more trouble was the memory. Finding 64GB of decent, reasonably priced, non-RGB rainbow unicorn barf memory in the middle of a global pandemic was ...
Some interesting stuff in this GN video. I wouldn't have thought the shortages were caused by both a supply and a demand problem, but I guess they are.
You ever play with the video hardware passthrough? I'm about to give that a try soon, although I'm not using unraid so this may not be entirely useful. What I've read so far is that it's generally a bit more work than passing through a network controller, or something like that. It's also a bit eas...
I bought a pizza Good choice. I skipped over bulldozer and all its derivatives entirely. The last AMD based machine I had was an Athlon64 machine, but that'll be changing soon. I did recommend Ryzen to a friend of mine who built a 2700X machine and likes it. However, they also expressed joy about t...
If I was in the market the IronWolf's are probably what I'd be looking at. Fortunately the 4x2TB WD Red's I got about two years ago are still doing well in the backup box.
I think I have a heatgun stashed away in the shop somewhere. I also have a baking sheet I wouldn't mind using if necessary. I used to preheat it, and then dump water on it while making bread as a cheap way to create steam in a conventional home oven, so it's a little wiggy now from the thermal shock...
