Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

I wish SoC was a more strictly defined term. It seems like it's just the latest TLA used to make a chip sound new and shiny. I guess it makes some sense with graphics, memory controller, and(partially) PCIe integrated into the CPU, but you'll still need a lot of other stuff managed by other controll...

My first thought is that it's a little bonkers they can download that much data that quickly at all let alone from a thing that's in space.

Re: What liquid is used for "water" cooling?

I've heard of some using anti-freeze as an additive also, but I doubt that'd be done professionally, and it's obviously pants on head stupid unless there's a chiller involved also. Once you go to the trouble of setting all that up you might as well just get an LN2 pot and forgo "water" coo...

Re: CAPTCHA confirmation bias

The only time I've seen the "choose all of X" option from captcha is when I've been testing a form that contains one and have hit the page multiple times. I guess my usual browsing aren't suspicious enough to get flagged. That's kind of strangely disappointing in a way.

Re: High or low fps?

Indeed. The point is not "we can see 220 frames per second", but that there is no point in making the comparison at all. I imagine there is an area of diminishing returns beginning at some frequency, but the claim of "you can only see X frames per second" is just nonsensical when...

Re: Can solder under IHS "go bad"? should I delid?

If temperatures have always read that high, then I can't imagine those temperatures are accurate. A CPU run at 10-15 degrees hotter than its max tcase temperature almost certainly wouldn't have survived this long otherwise.

Re: Can solder under IHS "go bad"? should I delid?

If you have the appropriate gear, and it won't inconvenience you terribly if it dies, then yeah you might as well give it a shot. At the same time, if it's not super important hardware I'm not sure how much time I'd spend on it myself. Ark lists tcase as 68.6C, so like JBI said, if those temperature...

The best you'd get from me is Design By Programmer(meaning, bad), so I'm probably not the best choice either. A friend of mine just tried Design Crowd for something similar and had a pretty good experience with it, so that might be an idea also.

Re: High or low fps?

The problem with trying to put a number on it is your eyeballs send back a continuous stream of information instead of a discrete series of static images, and any meaningful number would be different depending on what you're looking at. In the example of the tests I mentioned by the US Air Force pil...

Re: High or low fps?

The US Air Force has done tests which prove that the human eye can interpret and differentiate images displayed on screen for only 1/220th of a second. However, that's a single stationary image, and your eyeballs really can't be compared to monitors or cameras. They don't work the same way, and the ...

Re: Looking to upgrade from my i5-3570K need some advice

Now, for you optical drive holdouts, y'all weird. True dat. I've got only a single SSD in this machine, but I've got another one in the pile of parts I never seem to get to, and I've got an mSATA SSD + adapter that I scavenged from the NUC when I no longer needed it. Older smaller drives can be a p...

Beware of browser DNS caches playing tricks.

That feeling when you think a "minor change" you've just copied from staging to production has completely broken everything.

I like really sharp cheese also. I usually add a little of it when I make scrambled eggs. Not enough so that you can see it once it melts into the eggs, but just enough so that you get a little bit of cheesy goodness added to the flavor.

Re: What shows are you recently watching?

I think bringing in so many new characters was kind of an admission that the show wasn't doing so great previously. It seemed like bringing Lennie James into the cast helped a lot with that. I cut the cord about a month ago, and Fear didn't make the cut for me as a show I'd go out of my way to keep ...
