The push/pull setup on the radiator is a good fit there. Sometimes it's difficult to find a spot for that which doesn't get in the way.

I'd probably still get a cheap GPU if you wanted to go the HTPC route. Of course, that also means stashing it somewhere out of sight probably isn't going to work.

Re: What to do with old PC?

Yeah, backup/media server is probably a good choice. If you're interested in networking you could get a cheap ethernet card and turn it into a router. CPU-wise it'd probably do fine as an HTPC also, but you might want to get a cheap GPU for it if you decide to go that route.

Re: Cable modems with Intel Puma6 chipset

Bah. I'm replacing this thing with an 6183. I never really noticed the latency issue, but I can get an 6183 from Amazon's warehouse for $50, and then get $15 back if I trade in the 6190 back to Amazon. It'll still be plenty fast enough for any service I might have in the foreseeable future. Edit: Nu...

DancinJack can smack me with a trout if I get this wrong, but it seems like you're throwing more speed at a problem which isn't caused by the hardware being slow. A bad workflow done quickly is often still bad. Hence, you're doing it wrong. I like ITX machines also, but I have little patience for wa...

Indeed. You're doing it very wrong. I wouldn't expect any browser to be well behaved with that many tabs open regardless of the resources required.

If the delta in air temperature inside and outside the case is big enough for that to make a difference, then you've probably got other things to worry about anyway.

The FTW3 is the one I've been eyeballing, and trying to remind myself I don't need unless I also upgrade a monitor. PC Perspective just did a review of the SC2. No big surprises there, but you can check that out if you want to get an idea of how it performs compared to a reference card.

Users should not have root by default on PCs either. It doesn't have to be difficult to get root access(sudo make-sandwich), but it shouldn't be given away without even asking first.

Yeah, and I have no idea why. It can't be that difficult to create a bike seat which isn't the cyclists equivalent of a hair shirt, but most bike people I've talked to seem to think otherwise, or are just uninterested for some reason.

That's going to be a sweet machine, and I think you made the right choice with the 7700k. I've been trying to remind myself I don't have any use for a 1080Ti, at least not with a 60hz display, but that just makes me want to replace that also. :)

I just installed Win10 in a VM here using a Win7 key. Pretty nifty. Although, attempting to install the creators update was a complete fail. I got as far as the logo screen and then it just dies. No spinny dots, or any other signs of progress of any kind. I guess I'll download updates and stuff now ...

No they just left it by the door, which in this neighborhood isn't a problem. I can't find any evidence of a forceful attempt of placing the package in the mailbox, so I'm thinkin the mail guy probably just hit a wrong button or something.

Yeah, it is a dumb choice. If he's got things like tax codes in there which conceivably could change often it's just going to be a pain in the neck. Even the names and the countries themselves can change every now and then.

Compared to the GTX 980s, would the 1080 Ti improve the speed of these tasks by more than 15%? I haven't seen tests for those tasks, but if the gaming tests I've seen are any indication the performance boost may be quite a bit more than 15%. In gaming the 1080Ti is about 30% faster than the 1080. I...
