Re: Black Friday Approaches!

If I was you, I'd go with Coffee Lake for the extra cores. You had initially mentioned a 6850K...think of an 8700K as getting a 50+ percent off discount. The HEDT platform's other advantages shouldn't be a big deal for the typical gaming machine. Agreed. If the primary use case is gaming, then I'm ...

Fat also has greater energy density than either carbohydrate or protein making it a better fuel, but like FireGryphon said consuming too much of it does bad things.

It's best if you do just to help in avoiding doing something boneheaded, but I think Buub was referring more to the kind of "micro-optimizations" that may shave a some CPU time off the program, but do so at the expense of readability.

I can't tell if the expected response was "FROM THE ASHES AMD WILL RULE!", or if they actually wanted to talk about how Vega was faring in current games. Fortunately it seems like there isn't much interest in the former, and informed discussion on the latter is difficult without knowing mo...

Re: GCC errors with compiling C code.

I did ok in discrete structures, but I had three semesters of calculus by then, and had been coding for a few years already. At my school discrete structures 1 I think was a sophomore class, and the second semester was a 300-series class. Maybe the fact that they broke it up into two courses is part...

Re: GCC errors with compiling C code.

The most common stuff that I use regularly from the theory side is on the running time of algorithms. Knowing what it means for an algorithm to run in "linear time", and knowing how to spot an algorithm that won't scale very well once there's a bunch of stuff running through it can be quit...

That's just the usual race to the bottom, I guess. It probably doesn't help that most people think anodizing is something that's really hard and very expensive. It's actually something you can do at home without too much trouble. When I did it as part of a project it did make the place smell like po...

Yeah, no kidding. I put everything on my whiteboard. I can't imagine someone in networking not doing the same, or at least not having some other way of physically mapping things out. At least with software a lot of it is intangible, but a network is a real, physical thing.

The stuff that doesn't seem to fit comes later, like the courses on Theory of Computation. Also, I would say that if you're looking at specific things like loops and object orientation and applying those to a problem in general, then you've already trained yourself to think in concepts instead of ap...

A 60 inch 1080p TV that's new out of the box might be a difficult thing to find these days. There's plenty of 40-ish inch 1080p TVs around, but with 4k TVs starting at around $400 there's just not much incentive to make 1080p TVs of that size anymore.

Am I correct in remembering that your 3014 is your only display? If so, keep your current display and just get a secondary display. I have two U3415Ws which I got 2-3 years ago for about $500 each, so don't expect to pay another $1000 in order to get something decent.

Even if you're not taking notes per say, I have to agree that writing stuff down is a pretty good way to burn something into memory. That's true even if that's the only reason for it, or even if it's just to help in visualizing what you're working on. My desk is often cluttered with scraps of paper ...

It's not uncommon for me to read the same documentation multiple times when looking up function parameters, return types, and whatnot. Re: GCC errors with compiling C code.

I don't think C or C++ are going anywhere any time soon. The reason C is often used for low level applications is because it doesn't have the overhead of a more "modern" language like Java. The more a language does for you, the less control you have over exactly what the application really...

Surprisingly a lot of things are immune system related, once your body attacks itself things suck. Having one of those bodies myself I can attest to that, but so long as you pay attention to your body and don't ignore the signs of excess strain(which is something everyone really should do anyway), ...

Apple is just being Apple. They take something which has been done before, and they make something which doesn't suck, and then everyone loses their minds about it. That's not to say they don't have some serious talent when it comes to making hardware. They make some really nice hardware, but they h...

Not to mention we're clearly talking about a near ideal situation here. This isn't the kind of facial recognition that's done from an old security camera of a partially obscured face using a grainy image in low light of someone who was a considerable distance away from the camera.

I don't think that would be so much of a problem, but if EU is right and there's an infrared image involved, then the killer may need to work somewhat quickly so they could get what they needed from the phone before the body cooled.
