Re: Ready Player One Trailer is out

I get that some people do not like the book. But dammit you all are just being fickle. And people call me a curmudgeon. I am a curmudgeon, my wife says so. A friend was so excited about the book that I just expected more. And I am so, so tired of "corporation 100% evil, plucky hero 100%...

Re: Ready Player One Trailer is out

With fuel/energy being scarce/expensive, the "stacks" allow the largest amount of cheap housing possible to be close to viable city centers. Infrastructure is essentially completely broken for normal people, so no one can afford to live in "suburbs" anymore. Um...why is that the...

I thought the book was average at best. Why on earth would anyone stack trailers in Oklahoma? Have you SEEN Oklahoma? No shortage of space.

Re: What are you playing right now?

I found a game similar to Hearts of Iron 2 (it is an extensive mod) called Darkest Hour. This game is getting old now, but still runs in compatibility mode. I've never seen such a crazy historical sandbox where almost anything can happen and every game is somewhat different. I found a mod where you ...

The cricket game on Google's homepage. :P Every time Google does something like this I think about the time it took to create this thing just so it can be on Google's homepage for a day and then never seen again. And yet it will be played by more people for more hours than most indie games! :) 61 i...

Re: What shows are you recently watching?

2 days left till Game of Thrones! My Indian coworkers tend to love the show as much as me. 4 out of 7 on our dev team watch it. Our boss's boss's boss's boss watches too. Also, I am going to start watching The Expanse now that I'm mostly done with book 1. Enjoying Star Wars: Rebels which was a pleas...

Re: Retro console gaming

I thought I could be a "retro gamer" and maybe to some degree I can. I could play through Planescape: Torment again, for example. My wife wanted to try some games recently and installed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Final Fantasy VII. She found them on some list of games ladie...

Ugh, Stellaris is hard. I had another awakened empire attack me. Finally won after a brutal series of naval engagements. The minute I win that one, The Unbidden come in with a 400k power fleet and start eating my planets. After the war I was in, there was no way I could get my fleet back together wh...

And here I thought I was the only one that did that. trainersftw BUT only in single player games. I draw the line at online multiplayer stuff. Right, I would not even know how to engage in multiplayer hacking and don't trust "warez" sites. Paradox grand strategy games are such that I can ...

Re: What are you playing right now?

Been playing Stellaris with the expansion and various mods. Stellaris is interesting to me because the difficulty is all over the place. Too much depends on how the galaxy is initially set up, it seems. Also, the AI seems to randomly choose between super-aggressive and super-passive no matter what ...

I don't believe I have ever eaten it.

It sounds intriguing after many years of hearing about it. A Filipino friend cooks with it but I haven't eaten the results.

RIP Steven Furst - Babylon 5

Another of the B5 actors has died. I loved his role as Vir Cotto. Great character.

RIP.

Anecdotal comment on the exchange being difficult. Another coworker heard how the first coworker has been "making money" so he tried to buy BTC a few weeks ago right before it had a huge spike. He couldn't get in and buy via coinbase, and so he "lost" $1000 in growth. So yes, in ...

Re: Tell me about the new Crypto-Currency

A coworker made a ton on Ethereum when it jumped from $30 to over $200. Did he cash out? If just has a balance (or "re-invested") on poloniex or GDAX or Kraken, he arguably hasn't made anything yet. Agreed, and he is trying to figure out if he should cash out. If it tanks before he sells,...

Perhaps a perception among some people that we are heading for a period of global political instability? Kind of like the gold bug thing, but geekier. Bitcoin bubble-tastic??

I have a couple work friends speculating in bitcoins. One sold 5k of company stock from the stock purchase plan and bought bitcoins. I know I'm not generally a prophet but I think we're in bubble territory. What is the reason it's really increasing in value so rapidly other than sheer speculation? A...

I was 19 in the summer of 1994. Soundgarden was definitely in my wheelhouse during early adulthood. Me and my friends listened to them a lot. When I think 90's alternative I think Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Soundgarden, etc.

This thread made me think. I may have a Win 8.1 PC at home. It shows "end of mainstream support for Windows 8.1" in Jan 2018. What is the difference between mainstream support and extended support? And LOL at Captain Ned's example. My Fortune 20 company is as bad, mostly running Windows 7 ...
